What's the story about the "wished he kicked the field goal"? (I pay very little attention to the NFL)
On another general-interest forum, where there's a Jeopardy viewing thread, one of the participants is absolutely trashing AR for revealing that he'd never heard of a "sackbut". But that guy is a jerk, and an obvious sports-hater who can't stand the idea of a jock on his beloved game show. I think that AR's comment endeared him to the Everyman who watches the show but has never heard of a sackbut, either.
I'm not sure if I'm being redundant here but he also had that cameo on The Office. That might be what you're talking about with the most popular show in Netflix history but Idk since I haven't seen their viewing numbers for individual shows -- I thought they didn't release those and even the showrunners don't get to see the numbers but that might just be for original content. For anyone who hasn't seen it Aaron is an American Idol judge with Santigold and Clay Aiken and he tells Ed Helms, "Look we've seen a lot of people today and you're just not that good" which is word for word what a college coach said to Rodgers in HS and Aaron famously never forgot that and carried the chip.
The idea that even then, when he's just having fun in a guest spot on The Office, that he's still so petty and passive aggressive just cracks me up. Probably the most lovably petty superstar of all time -- with the exception of that time he took it too far and said Butte CC instead of Cal on his NFL intro for like 10 ******* years (not gonna lie, that one hurt even though it wasn't really about us)

Maybe, but I think the nature of modern fame has a lot to do with that. If you ask people to list famous people most everyone will rattle off a bunch of athletes, actors, and musicians. People are also much more likely to associate an athlete with the school they played because that's the first big stage introduction to audiences and unlike regular graduates athletes are on national TV wearing jerseys with the school name on the chest.
So if you ask someone if Beverley Cleary (RIP to a Legend) or Steve Wozniak are famous then they'll say yes but if you gave them a list of University of California grads and told them to pick the most famous they'll probably pick out names like Aaron Rodgers, Marshawn Lynch, George Takei, Chris Pine, Adam Duritz and other big names in more visible professions before they get to Cal grads like Jack London or Earl Warren.
It's a little bit sad but it makes sense to me that people not from the area and who went to other schools would think of athletes first and associate them more closely with the school they played at than highly successful graduates in any other field. I mean if you asked me to name a famous person who went to (for example) Auburn I'm naming Bo Jackson and Charles Barkley before Tim Cook even though Cook has been much more impactful on most peoples' everyday lives. Now if only we could get Woz to write out blank checks California athletics the way Cook has for Auburn . . . but it's probably not the time or place for that talk

Yeah, but the U.S. population is so much bigger now than when Takei and Peck were at their peaks.
Heck, you could argue that Takei is more popular now than he has ever been thanks to social media.
(Rodgers has about a million more folllowers than Takei on Twitter and about 200,000 more on Instagram.)
The FG story is from the NFC championship game this year. There were 2 minutes left, Packers were down 8 and had a 4th & Goal at the 8 yard line, Lafleur decided to kick the 26 yard field goal to go down 5 instead of giving his HOF and MVP quarterback a shot at it. The Packers never got the ball back and the Bucs went on to win the game and the super bowl
