The names that kept getting called: Evan Tattersall, Chigozie Anusziem.

The name that I never heard once: Kuony Deng. Cameron Goode...once, I think.

And whenever I looked to see who was that DB who just got burnt, it was #21.

Defense wasn't the problem tonight. Giving up 22 points to a potent air raid offense with next level caliber talent at QB, WR and TE is not bad at all. Scoring 3 points after the first quarter is a huge problem.

Can't really blame that all that much, that QB was 3 seconds and balls away. No time to get to him. They did stuff their running game as what it was.

Agreed. Defense played not great but good enough.

I was at the game and will have to re-watch when I can stomach it. But I think Chiggy's name kept getting called because Strong kept going at him like a smart QB should (more so than going at Drayden).

#21 was our freshman 3rd CB Gamble playing in his first game I think? He will be good, but he got beat a few times tonight. Remember Syd'Quan Thompson in his first game at Tennessee? He got better later, and so will Gamble.

Our defense was far from dominant, but that was a good QB and offense they were facing. The D played ok, considering. They weren't the real problem.

The real problem was both our offense and our offensive tactics. When you are gashing them on the ground like we were you either need to:
- Keep doing it. Don't get cute.
- Play-fake off that credible run threat if you are going to pass to keep the LBs and Safeties at home. Don't go empty backfield to try to show off how "multiple" you are as an OC!

So again, the defense wasn't the real problem.

Deng and Hicks have been over-rated their whole careers.

The SF 49ers showed in the playoffs following the 2019 season that you can continue to run the entire game if you have the personnel and the defense. Cal has that. What Cal doesn't have is the intelligence of Kyle Shannahan and the ability of Jimmy G. at QB. Garbers needs to get his stuff together or he should be benched.

There is no reason to think the guy behind garbers would do better, and decades of this board being wrong about who should start.

If you told me we gave up 22 to Nevada, I would have said we won. The D was not the problem.

This. Our offense kept putting the D back on the field.

I agree! We really are not in good shape at QB, no matter who plays.

Maybe not. But, should the coaches give anyone a chance? Or, should they just assume nobody will do better...and stick with Garbers...and fail to develop other QBs? It doesn't have to be a permanent decision. It doesn't even have to be for an entire game. And, giving someone else a shot may inspire/fire Garbers up so he plays with greater passion and elevates his game.

Wilcox was impressed that Glover mastered the playbook so quickly. Glover also passed up the previous #2 QB-someone who had received a lot of positive reviews by the mods and many others on this board. One of the knocks on Garbers is that he holds the ball for too long. Well, maybe Glover WON'T do that since he has mastered the playbook. He is an experienced QB (at Penn) and may be a lot better than people expect. We'll never know if he isn't given a chance. And, let's be real, he doesn't have to be a world-beater to be more productive than Garbers. Even just being "serviceable" would be better.

The fact that Ryan Glover transferred here this summer after a not-too-distinguished career at Nowhere U and was promptly made second-string after less than one month of practicing does not bode well. He is still not even listed on the BI version of the team roster (from the pull-down menu above).

If you watched practice this fall, that would not have surprised you. And Garbers did not look much better. Maybe Garbers will suddenly flip the switch and become what he was. He's done it before but I'm not holding my breath.

Insanity is to keep doing the same thing over again and expect a different result. Garbers is mediocre and cannot stretch the field after 22 starts. He's not changing in game 23. Another QB has a chance to improve and develop, and we should start Ryan or Kai even if not better than Garbers today, We have two non-conference games. We know Garbers' ceiling. He will take the team down (especially given Musgrave's predictable play calling.) Take a risk - elevate QB2. He may develop over 8 quarters of football and we may have a better offense when conference play starts. We know the season ahead with Garbers under center. And it won't be fun to watch.

This team lacks athleticism and speed on both sides of the ball. Did you see any discernable difference between the sides Saturday night?

Only one that stood out to me was QB. Nevada has an upper division Pac-12 level starter in Carson Strong. So the Wolfpack was superior at the position. Other than that, Cal looked about the same as their MWC opponent.

Now Cal heads to Forth Worth looking down the barrel of 0-2.

Agreed. Pick the top 3 QBs (presumably Garbers is one of them) and give each 2 consecutive series against TCU and then again against Sac St. We need to give the other two QBs game experience. We need to use the "preseason" OOC games as a way to build for the more important conference games. Pac12 North seems weak this year, so we may have chance despite our apparent shortcomings.
