Thank God Sonny is not our coach

While our coach is struggling with his team through three loses by a total of 12 points, I'll take Wilcox and his integrity any day over our former coach.

Sonny Dykes is now saying he had no knowledge of his player's flag-planting at TCU, which is a bold-faced lie.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/32300939/tcu-gary-patterson-rips-smu-alleges-flag-planting-incident-was-planned

Who remembers Dykes' teams at Cal planting the California flag at various schools, including Texas? Merely coincidence? Nah. He's lying. I'm so glad we don't have to deal with him whoring about with other schools each offseason as he sniffed about for another job, undermining our recruiting each time he was found to be attempting to leave.

I didn't care much for Michael Williams's leadership, but loved that he pulled the trigger to fire Dykes.

Nobody wants Sonny back, but talking about his success provides a landmark for how bad things have gotten in Berkeley. I'm not a Wilcox hater and I've confronted those that want to fire him now. But we have coaching problems at Cal. To be honest, I think it goes even beyond coaching, but there are coaching problems that need to be addressed. I'm not ready to say it is Wilcox himself, but the performance of the team reeks of poor coaching in certain areas. The main areas are ST play and QB recruiting.

I'm glad Sonny is no longer our coach because of his 19-30 record, one bowl berth in four seasons, and truly historically awful defense. The Sonny pumpers who jump the moon every time SMU wins a game have selective amnesia around those facts.

Dykes was a bad fit for Cal. He should not have been hired and it was good that we parted ways. He is not a bad coach though, and is a good fit for SMU.

The players who played for him are still great Cal Bears.

Again, no one wants Dykes back.

People comparing Wilcox in year 5 to Dykes in year 4 are NOT doing so because they want Dykes back. They are making a point about Wilcox. Nobody thinks they are the only two coaching choices in the world.

When everybody talks about why they think he was canned (with varying degrees of accuracy), the above is why he should have been canned. The clincher (for me) was when he tried to hire his third DC, but we were going to have to pay above market rate to get somebody good (like hazard pay to be his DC). Heck, we struggle just to pay market.

The rest of the Sonny Story, like the exaggerations about his job searching, concerned me less.

Exactly. Wilcox may get "is he intermittent fasting threads" that Dykes would never get, would know better than to call his women's day something other than "Pigskins and Pearls" doesn't have a Texas twang and would never do the flag planting thing and then lie about it, but he has not performed any better than Dykes did on the field to date. However, I am also not for firing Wilcox mid-season. Lets see how things turn out this year. If we salvage something he almost certainly gets another. The next QB is a big question. Restoring the defense? The one thing I am wary of is extending him "for recruiting." As I've said, I am convinced we need to make a change in basketball, so we need to deal with that first. Hopefully Wilcox gets it together in the meantime.

If a Dykes team had planted a Cal flag on the Stanford S after a win, I wouldn't not have complained.

Without Goff, Sonny would have been thrown to the curb before he got to choose to leave. F him. On his Wikipedia page they should scrub the Cal colors off him.

Dykes had a horrible first season, but otherwise he was just mediocre as a coach at Cal. Not terrible, not great. He did kind of waste Goff's talent by maxing out at an Armed Forces Bowl.

Wouldn't be surprising if he did better at a mid-major school in his home state. That seems more his speed, not Power 5 in California.

That alone would warrant a contract extension.

Ha. Maybe. But gotta beat them first.

Wilcox has only done it once and Dykes never did it at all.

After Sark hired him as his DC, Wilcox was the guy that hired Tosh as his DL coach, then flipped Shaq Thompson to play LB for his buddy Sirmon to coach in Wilcox's defense, screwing Tedford, the guy that gave him his first coaching job at Cal. However, Tedford and Cal fans have forgiven that so I guess it is cool.

Wilcox followed Sark to USC and when Sark was fired, Helton was promoted over Wilcox. Wilcox's USC defense finished 65th in total defense (over 400 yards per game) and was fired after Stanford scored 41 points on 417 yards, including 262 yards rushing, in the PAC-12 Championship game.

Of course, kinda karma that Helton was fired after the loss to Stanford this year.

Sheesh!

Thanks for making me feel even worse about our current coach. When do we get the Fire Wilcox website or petition going?

I just a tweet that Cal is dead last by a HUGR margin versus rest of the pac-12 in TV viewership. I can't believe it but it said total viewership through the 4 games is only 448K. The 11th best is Oregon St. At 1.4 million. *** is going on with this program? We are at least holding steady for a while.

We have had the least compelling schedule in memory with games on FS1 late night, ESPNU and a couple of PAC-12 Bay Area games.

Unless you're a die hard Cal fan, it's a losing team that plays a boring brand of football. Not much to see, although I continue to watch and attend. But dead last still surprises me…

I haven't spent more than a minute thinking about Sonny Dykes in many a year. But in that minute I do always remember that we beat Texas twice, so I end up with positive feelings about him before moving on.

Cal beat Texas at Austin in a full stadium. That was awesome.

Wilcox beat Ole Miss in a half-empty stadium, which makes that experience less satisfying.

He was one of the worst coaches Cal ever had. We set school, conference and NCAA records for defensive ineptitude under him and they were not all in his first year. He sucked. Wilcox doesn't appear to be the answer, but still prefer him over Dykes.

Cal isn't a natural draw, no, but many of the eyeballs watching our rivals were from fans of OOC teams, including some CFB blue bloods. Other Pac 12 teams have so far played Michigan, Ohio State, LSU, Texas A&M, and BYU. I'm sure K State, Minnesota, and Purdue have decent draws also. Oregon State, WSU, and Furd have already played USC.
