Multiple Cal Football Student-Athletes In COVID Protocol

November 4, 2021

BERKELEY, CA – Multiple Cal football student-athletes are in COVID protocol and will not be available to play in Saturday's game at Arizona. All student-athletes traveling to Tucson will be tested and cleared prior to departing the Bay Area. Everyone within the Cal football program is compliant with UC Berkeley's COVID-19 vaccine requirements, and 99 percent of football student-athletes are fully vaccinated. Due to state and federal student privacy laws, Cal Athletics is not able to comment on the personal health of individual student-athletes.

"Our primary concern is for the health of our student-athletes, and we continue to monitor the situation closely," Cal Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton said. "As we know, this pandemic is not over. We need to respect it and understand that it can affect much of what we do every day. Even with 99 percent of our football student-athletes fully vaccinated, we have seen that breakthrough cases are still possible."

Multiple players? That sort of language is often used to artificially make a situation seem greater than it is. Would we be be all Chicken Little if it were two players? Three? 50, or anywhere near that, all at once? Anything's possible, I guess.

I assume that they are being retested...hopefully by a different lab.

Anyone showing symptoms?

How come there's been nothing more on this?

Me (thinking all conspiratorial): would an upcoming opponent's crazy fans stoop to this? Nah, couldn't be.

If we do show up to play, what will AZ do? What will the players do? Might they refuse to play?

Latest is that the "game is still on". Minus who? The Bears first truly winnable P12 game - double digit favorites. What a bonanza!!

Wouldn't the team already be in Arizona today if the game is on? Are they?

Holy S***! How did we not see this coming? One more gobsmacking obstacle to Cal football success.

Can we win with a back up qb who has never played at this level? If Garbers could not play.i hope all the people out are not a one position. We have plenty of tight ends and running back. The offensiveand defensive lines are critical that we dont lose people from there.

Leave Berkeley with entire team and play the rest of the games on the road.

The Berkeley covid rules are so wacky. Maybe players that aren't eligible to play if they're flying with the team, can still be eligible if they drive themselves there.

Is there any pushback from Knowlton with the city if Wilner's statement is true?

14 hour drive. They would have to leave immediately.

Wait! The city says if you're vaccinated and exposed you do NOT have to quarantine unless you have symptoms. So why are people blaming the city?

The likelihood is that those who cannot participate are either unvaccinated and exposed or vaccinated and symptomatic. They SHOULD quarantine, don't you think?

By the way, how many players are on the team? If they're 99% vaccinated, that means what maybe one guy not? Anyway all is speculation until we get some actual reporting.

I would hope the whole administration is pushing back, but I'm not optimistic.

What exactly is the city going to do if the players board the team bus for the airport? Send some social workers to block it?

Why does the program seem surprised by these policies - same thing happened last year, it just got swallowed up by cancellations across NCAA and Pac-12.

Whatever protocols there are, they've been in place for a while? They are prescribed. They (and we) should have known when quarantines or mandatory testing would or could put a game at risk. Why is this different this week? Why is Cal signalling via media to blame the City of Berkeley now when they could have fought this before the season.

Does anyone actually have more information regarding what's going on? There are wild rumors about 50 people not being able to play. I think we don't know if people tested positive, or just were exposed, or just didn't get a negative test yet, or what?

The city of Berkeley has no jurisdiction over any airport in the Bay Area. Their rules literally don't matter.

What I don't understand is when Wilner(who I believe has integrity), states that this would not happen to any other team in the Pac 12, it makes me wonder what makes Cal so inept at dealing with these issues? Isn't Cal supposed to be the top public university in the country? Why can't they get their "stuff" together?

Straight from the Berkeley order:

[ol]
  • A vaccinated person with an exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 is not required to quarantine if they meet all of the following criteria:
  • [ol]
  • The person is fully vaccinated before the exposure; and
  • The person exhibits no symptoms of COVID-19.
  • [/ol][/ol]
They can take the proper measures to leave the city where the order doesn't apply.

Whatever the root cause it's the same reason why we let one person sitting in tree derail the stadium renovations for weeks (months?)

Once again, absolutely zero evidence that Knowlton or the Christ are showing any leadership or transparency into what is going on.

Why we keep fielding a team while simultaneously trying to give fans false hope that basic competency will be achieved is beyond me. We've had a year to get in front of idiotic Berkeley rules and somehow we are still getting surprised. Morons led by Christ and Knowlton. This is not on Wilcox who should be focused only on winning.

Oskidunker, help me out with this (and excuse my ignorance). Does "not allowed top play when they came back" mean that this mess is about playing status for the following week (USC game) as opposed to tomorrow's game?

The longer this goes without public information, the more far fetched the speculation. And, 90% of the time, people fear the worst. The problem is compounded by the worst getting worser by the hour.

This right here is proof of our practical irrelevance in the CFB world.

Can you imagine Bama or Clemson or ND having this many players ineligible (for any reason) and the local media not getting to the bottom of it?

CAL can sweep it under the rug (sort of) because no one in the media cares enough to force them to tell the truth.

Reading between the lines of Wilner's tweets and what info has been released. I'm starting to think it is a lot of asymptomatic people testing positive that otherwise wouldn't have been tested?

    Let me help you here…..

No one gives a damn about college athletics in the Bay Area. This is the #1 non-story of the day. Yep, it is receiving the amount of publicity it deserves - none.

No one is speculating because no one cares (other than a few dozen posters on an obscure website)….

Speaking for myself, I don't care how the sausage is made or why, I just care about the outcome. Why speculate when it is a health issue, the details of which are protected by law? Just be patient. All will be revealed soon. Reading the comments on this thread make me wonder about the sanity of Cal alums…..
