Multiple Cal Football Student-Athletes In COVID Protocol

November 4, 2021

BERKELEY, CA – Multiple Cal football student-athletes are in COVID protocol and will not be available to play in Saturday's game at Arizona. All student-athletes traveling to Tucson will be tested and cleared prior to departing the Bay Area. Everyone within the Cal football program is compliant with UC Berkeley's COVID-19 vaccine requirements, and 99 percent of football student-athletes are fully vaccinated. Due to state and federal student privacy laws, Cal Athletics is not able to comment on the personal health of individual student-athletes.

"Our primary concern is for the health of our student-athletes, and we continue to monitor the situation closely," Cal Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton said. "As we know, this pandemic is not over. We need to respect it and understand that it can affect much of what we do every day. Even with 99 percent of our football student-athletes fully vaccinated, we have seen that breakthrough cases are still possible."

The question might be how many out in addition to the 9.

If this weren't a health issue - it would almost be comical. In all fairness to the Wildcat homecoming participants - wouldn't it be nice to have an official statement? How about those who have booked travel and hotels? And the homecoming preparation? This speculation is ridiculous. Have I missed any statements other than Wilner's? Did anyone go to the airport, you know, to do a head count? I must be expecting too much to get some kind of update inside of 24 hours. Consider the players themselves. What are they going through? Last minute position changes and game preparation? We've been through this before. Was it the Ucla game last year when linemen had to drive down to LA separately from the team? Come on.

It is a mess. What should have been a battle of a team on a 20 game losing streak and a team trending up is now going to be a hotly contested battle (who knows depending on who is out, AZ could have a decided advantage). Curse or Tucson is in full effect.

Reading between the lines of Wilner's tweets and what info has been released. I'm starting to think it is a lot of asymptomatic people testing positive that otherwise wouldn't have been tested?
But this still doesn't square with what Wilner is saying about the City of Berkeley being the problem here. CoB doesn't require vaccinated asymptomatic people to quarantine. So why is the city the issue?

Not saying they can't be, but Wilner has not provided any details.

Agreed. I'm getting the feeling it's requiring people to test that other places wouldn't require to do so? Then those people test positive? Just guessing but seems to be what they're hinting. Not taking a side on that debate - just trying to figure it out
Right, though again just testing positive wouldn't seem to be an issue if the players are vaccinated and not sick. Must be something else (or Wilner is mistaken).
Well, I think testing positive would indeed be an issue. Even if vaccinated. Infected asymptomatic people can spread the virus.

So what?!
So spreading the virus is, you know, a bad thing. Or hadn't you heard?

If you're vaccinated you should be able to play as soon as you test negative and have been asymptomatic for 3 days.

This is just way too much common sense for city of Berkeley. I think we have better luck making the case that memorial stadium is actually in Oakland.

A journalist mistaken?????

Is that possible?

Never forget rule #1: For the most part, the media is a for-profit entity. Their objective is keeping stockholders happy by generating sales through the publication of content. The accuracy of that content is secondary to the need to getting it in the hands of the paying public.

Given this journalist's penchant for sensationalism, I have no doubt regarding the fallibility of his published information.

I don't take the dim view of 71Bear that inaccuracy is rampant in journalism. Accuracy of journalists is at the top of the list of any story, at least on the programs and publications I listen to and read. The writer is compelled to say he/she attempted to obtain a comment or counter-statement from "the other side." Often, the counter-statement may not be forthcoming immediately, but eventually provided. In addition, I have noticed that editors assign a news item to several reporters so that one view does not dominate. In that way the journalist has provided accuracy.

What journalists often do which can raise some hackles is to state the issue in a way that might provoke comment or scare the reader by taking the issue to a final conclusion, e.g., if we don't remove the plastic in the Pacific Ocean we will be finding fish devouring the material and eliminating a food source.
If the last six years haven't convinced you regarding the lows to which journalism has sunk………….
There's journalism and there's "new journalism" as defined by Merriam Webster:

"Journalism that features the author's subjective responses to people and events and that often includes fictional techniques meant to illuminate and dramatize those responses."

Personally, I think "new journalism" is an excuse for reporters to do less research, since only their side of the argument matters. I don't read enough of Wilner to know if he fits the bill, or not.

Not saying they can't be, but Wilner has not provided any details.
Someone posted on Twitter a COB rule that said while vaccinated asymptomatic people who are exposed to someone with COVID-19 don't need to quarantine, they have to remain 6 feet apart from others for 14 days. Which would be impossible to do on a football trip? I wonder if that's the snag?
latest is that 9 starters are out. Don't know the total of players not going.
O-Line worries me the most.
Craig and Coleman, at the beginning of the week, were day-to-day due to injuries from the last game. By mid-week that changed to: Craig doubtful, Coleman day-to-day. Presumably even before the COVID news Craig was likely to be out. If 2 - 3 starters on OL are out, we can kiss the baby on this game. The Cats DL isn't all that bad and has created havoc.

Hey guys, in case you never heard the line they used to spout at business seminars/workshops:

"In Japanese, the symbol for crisis is the same as the symbol for opportunity."

(If that happens to not be true, shut up, because I must've heard it at a gazillion times, true or not.)

What I'm getting at here is this: What an opportunity tomorrow! Damn, I'm thinking of hopping a plane for Tucson for this one! (Kids will be fine at home with the tablets, chargers and leftover Halloween candy.)

This could be the funnest game since "The Play"! Seriously. Old-fashioned football. Guys going both ways. Next man up. Win one for the Garber. Youth movement. Get a look at guys we've never seen. Hold your beer close and your program closer (you will need them both).

Best of all, we can't lose... because we can't win! I mean, there's NO WAY we can win this game, right? So if we don't win, hey, whatever. Blame TypiCal-we-can't-have-nice-things. Blame the COB (Communists of Berkeley), for having players get tested for COVID. Blame Wilcox, Beau Baldwin, Ragle, Sirmon, Knowlton, Christ (Carol) and Buh. Definitely blame Sonny Dykes (hey didn't he used to coach at U of A?).

But guess what: We might win! Arizona is terrible and probably won't be able to or even want to take advantage, whereas we will be PLAYING WITH NOTHING TO LOSE! A wounded Bear is the most dangerous bear.

If we pull this one off (and we might), it will be one of the greatest wins in the history of mankind! And I'm thinking I want to be there in case it happens. Not sure if there is such a thing as an Arizona Football fan, but I definitely want to try and find some of their obnoxious basketball fans, so I can laugh in their face! (I will be wearing a mask if I get really close.)

GO BEARS! The best is yet to come!

I believe it was actually JFK who said this, but about Chinese (it's the same character in Japanese)

The Chinese use two brush strokes to write the word 'crisis. ' One brush stroke stands for danger; the other for opportunity. In any crisis, be aware of the danger-but recognize the opportunity.

To be fair though...it's also not exactly correct :p

People are making a big deal that Garbers did a media zoom call a few days ago from his apartment rather than at the performance center or the stadium (whatever they generally use for this) and think he must be in quarantine. I think it's circumstantial at best. We don't know when the media call was done. It's probably just as likely that he didn't want to spend the time traveling back and forth when he could be studying. We'll know for sure in about 18 hours.

Yes, "win one for the Garber" was me reaching out for a dumb joke. Chase Garbers may or may not be one of the ones that can't play. Wilcox isn't saying. If we're going to be missing 10, 15, however-many players, we probably want to at least retain the element of surprise.

What I don't understand is when Wilner(who I believe has integrity), states that this would not happen to any other team in the Pac 12, it makes me wonder what makes Cal so inept at dealing with these issues? Isn't Cal supposed to be the top public university in the country? Why can't they get their "stuff" together?
The school needs a new chancellor, one who provides greater leadership.
Chancellor Christ is a huge supporter of the athletic department, light years ahead of any recent chancellors. She got a significant portion of the stadium debt off the departments budget. She has been great for the rest of the university too. Unless you were being sarcastic you are way off base.

Here is what I don't get - of the team is 99% vaccinated and we are seeing a significant amount of breakthrough infections, we should be hearing about this from other teams.

So my takeaway is that this all has to do with COB rules that must be nonsensical as the rest of the country, including other California schools, don't seem to be impacted at all.

What the hell is going on? Hoping to learn a lot more tomorrow.

McGee wasn't able to play. I don't know why.

They had to go with senior Jack West.

Whether due to Covid, incompetence, etc., Furd could neither run the ball
nor stop the run.....at all. Uh, Utah had 441 yards on 48 carries.
