Cal is going to receive some national attention now if hasn't already.

The heck did the team do, have a makeout session amongst themselves? It's amazing that a 99% vaccinated team can have so many postive cases.

Knowing our luck, this will be ground zero for a new highly contagious variant dubbed the Cal virus.
Vaccine doesn't work. Players lied. New variant is unstoppable. Testing is getting false positives.

It has to be one of those. Since there isn't a lockdown of the city, and the CDC hasn't commented, it must be lying players or ****ty tests. Hint: we know false positives are a problem.

The USC game cancellation is the best possible outcome. With the national attention our players can highlight the LIES told by the administration (you'll get arrested if you don't test lol).

Sometime the short term pain is worth it. This will just help our cause to BURN IT TO THE GROUND.

They probably took the J&J vaccine which has less efficacy and duration? Also this is probably happening everywhere, just we tested everyone after multiple symptomatic COVID positive cases and found more. Pretty clear the entire college football world is sticking their head in the sand if they don't bother to test already vaccinated players ever under any circumstance.
It's almost certain that other programs just aren't testing like Cal is.
Correct. Probably lots of college athletes got the J&J vax, because it only has one shot, and as long as they are asymptomatic they don't get tested and keep playing.
. . . which is actually how the vaccine is supposed to work. We as a society have to decide when asymptomatic "outbreaks" among vaccinated people are acceptable risk.

This is the key. Most of society has accepted the risk. COB and the university have not. You could argue that kids still aren't able to be fully vaccinated for another month, but that really is the only argument at this point. The hospitals aren't overwhelmed anymore (that was the other good argument)

Pedal to the floor, UC/CoB. Almost there.

But as with Aaron, honesty would've been the better way to go. Something like this, "Competitive sporting events are considered inherently dangerous during the endemic phase of COVID 19. Out of an abundance of caution, the University will no longer support campus athletics, inclusive scholarship, non-scholarship and intramural sports. This diktat is effective immediately." Mic drop, static.

Is any official going to address the "get arrested for not testing" accusation?

Hot mess and such a tragic end to our season. I hope all the lost revenue to Berkeley and the businesses from this gets someone canned.

Yeah, I actually hope this incident starts a conversation about when we can let "case rates" go as a metric and focus more on deaths and hospitalizations. Because those are down and have remained down in highly-vaxxed areas. COVID-19 will be endemic, so there will always be cases. If there is no serious illness then maybe we just let people live their lives?

Even for unvaccinated kids the risk was always pretty low.

Almost all of them are unvaccinated and of those that are vaccinated, most of those have something else wrong with them such that something like pneumonia or the flu would have killed them, too. This has become just one more terrible thing that can kill you if you're sick, vulnerable, and/or unvaccinated.

Here's what I don't understand: When the UHS is supposedly lying to the players about whether the testing is required or recommended, the Athletic Department doesn't have an expert/advocate in that room? Or at least reviewing the situation immediately afterwards?

Makes no sense.

Turns out it was not a lack of communication. It was that they lied. Read Garbers recounting.

If this turns out to be true, it'll take a miracle to keep fb at Cal.
If I so much as a get a phone call from the cal athletics office asking about my plans to attend a football game, I will puke on the spot.

I made plans to go to the big game in a couple weeks but no thanks - this is too moronic to support.
Even during the downturn last decade I just ignored calls/emails from Cal Athletics reps, next year I am going to make an effort to respond pointedly after what has transpired over the last 2 months.
Most reps are students. Don't give them any grief. Instead bombard the AD office with emails and demand Knowlton resigns. I've sent over 6 emails to multiple AD staff members and as you probably know, not one response............yet. Knowlton is a putz.
