Imagine what it would be like if the Chargers ever hosted a conference championship game in that stadium. Might be 95% visiting team fans.

That will change because of Herbert. He will be a legend and the bandwagon jumpers will be a jumpin'. This former life long Raiders fan, because of Herbert's performance against the Raiders, have added the Chargers to my teams along with Goff's Lions.
For the last couple of years I have wished the Niners well and like it when they win…..but as an Oakland boy, I have no emotional investment and when they lose I feel nothing.

"Patrick Mahomes' heroic performance against the Bills was thrilling to watch, and his in-game heart rate indicates it was equally exciting to live through, Jeff writes.

By the numbers: Mahomes wore a Whoop fitness tracker during the game, and the collected data Shines some light on the kind of competitor he is when the lights shine the brightest.

His peak heart rate (191 beats per minute) came during his first-quarter TD run. But his sustained peak, as you'd expect, came during the 28 minutes of real time between the final two minutes of regulation and the game-winning score.

The biggest spikes during that hectic half hour were precipitated by game-changing plays, but his heart rate was actually lowest when the pressure was highest achieving "flow state" in those moments, according to his trainer.

In other words, aside from his otherworldly talent, one of Mahomes' greatest assets may be the ability to stay calm under pressure." Axios

"The last 18 Super Bowls have all featured either Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger or the 49ers.

2004: Brady
2005: Brady
2006: Roethlisberger
2007: Manning
2008: Brady
2009: Roethlisberger
2010: Manning
2011: Roethlisberger
2012: Brady
2013: 49ers
2014: Manning
2015: Brady
2016: Manning
2017: Brady
2018: Brady
2019: Brady
2020: 49ers
2021: Brady
Of note: The streak extends to 20 if you change "49ers" to "Bay Area teams." The Raiders played the Buccaneers in 2003 and Brady made his Super Bowl debut in 2002." Axios

One of the top NFL analysts has a B.A. in English from Yale and didn't play high school or college football.

Uh oh, Jeff Garcia enters this thread by way of criticism of that Yale grad. He came in too hot, then crashed, then burned.

https://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/ESPN-backs-Mina-Kimes-after-Jeff-Garcia-tirade-16811612.php?IPID=SFGate-HP-CP-Spotlight

Quote:

In a now-deleted Instagram tirade attempting to dunk on Kimes, Garcia who played in the league from 1999 to 2009 and made three Pro Bowl appearances, none with the 49ers called her out for not having done minutes on the field. He then proceeded to call one of the more respected sports reporters working today "a joke."

The attack came after Kimes likened Garoppolo to the kid who got an A in a class project "while doing none of the work," a take that is not particularly novel among sports media.

"Who the hell is Mina Kimes and when is the last time she threw a touchdown pass in a game? NEVER! EVER! has she taken a snap or can truly understand the ability, the mindset, the physical and mental toughness, that it takes to play the QB position or any position in the NFL," he wrote in the post Wednesday.

"The fact that there are people out there given a platform to talk about something that they have never done is hilarious and that's how you have to look at her, she's a joke!" Garcia wrote, accompanied by a crying-laughing emoji.

I'm having trouble with this sentence:

Quote:

Garcia who played in the league from 1999 to 2009 and made three Pro Bowl appearances, none with the 49ers called her out for not having done minutes on the field.

Wikipedia says he made 4 pro bowls, 3 with the niners. That matches my recollection too. Why would they randomly say he made 3 and none with the niners?

When we were all at Cal we learned that, from a journalism standpoint, the Chronicle was somewhere in the middle between the New York Times and the Daily Cal. It is now probably tied with the Daily Cal.

OK, a primer:

The article is from SF Gate.

SF Gate is *not* the San Francisco Chronicle.

SF Gate and the San Francisco Chronicle have the same owner: Hearst.

SF Gate began as the online arm of the Chronicle.

But now SF Gate is its own journalistic entity that is separate from the Chronicle, with its own editor in chief (who was a Daily Cal sports editor) and a managing editor (another former Daily Cal sports editor). It even has its own sports editor.

SF Gate is SFGate.com. San Francisco Chronicle is SFChronicle.com.

As an online-only publication, SF Gate is local with a bit of a focus that would attract national eyeballs. It has not problem having Drew Magary, who lives in Maryland and who probably has never stepped foot in San Francisco (I have no idea), as its most prominent columnist.

The San Francisco Chronicle likely wouldn't have as its most prominent columnist somebody who lives in Maryland.

A long time ago, SF Gate used to feature the work of the San Francisco Chronicle. If you go to SF Gate's home page, there are no stories from the Chronicle. And there are no SF Gate stories on SFChronicle.com.

Edited to add: My point is SF Gate is a small-time operation compared to the Chronicle. Because it's a small operation, you're probably going to see more errors.

I think to some men, a female offering harsh critiques about football is really offensive. This reminds me of the Aaron Rodgers/Molly Knight situation, which I will expound upon in the other thread. Many people -- including "blue checkmarks" -- dunked on Rodgers. But he only went after one person: a woman. As I said, I will delve into that later.

Dude, thanks for that clarification. I had gotten so out of the habit of getting important news from the Chronicle, especially in 2019, that I didn't realize there was a complete split that year with SFGate. I simply assumed the Chronicle had devolved into something akin to a blog site, which I was surprised but not shocked by given they were never a top tier newspaper to begin and because of a nation-wide decline in local news.

Quote:

In 2013, the Chronicle launched a paywalled premium website, sfchronicle.com. Over the next six years, varying amounts of free and premium Chronicle content appeared on SFGATE, then in 2019, the Chronicle and SFGATE officially became two separately run entities with their own editorial staffs and independent newsrooms.

My rankings.

1. Kansas City Chiefs (Random fact: Andy Reid is the only head coach left who isn't related to a former NFL head coach).
2. San Francisco 49ers
3. Cincinnati Bengals
4. Los Angeles Rams

Getting to know this very likable Niner team:

Trent Williams, Arizona alum and best LT in football:

George Kittle, Iowa alum, elite TE, and best blocking TE in football, and a funny dude:

Debo Samuel, charismatic South Carolina alum, freakish WR/RB hybrid weapon, and soul of this Niner team:

Fred Warner, elite LB out of BYU:

Nick Bosa: Ohio State alum who shocked me by coming back better than before his ACL. Strong possibility of getting Comeback Player of the Year.

Arik Armstead: still have baggage from him not coming to Cal despite BI posters stuffing the ballot in an online poll about where he should go to college. He's turned out to be a solid NFL DL.

Robbie Gould, Penn State alum who has never missed a fg in the playoffs (20/20).

Jimmy G, Eastern Illinois product and #1 player football fan wives would want to get a crack at.

Alex Mack: profuse sweater and our boy.

What percentage of BI posters would have been able to get that INT to seal it for the Niners? 80 damn percent!

That said, you don't deserve to win with 50 yards rushing.

The roster as a whole is pretty great. But they need a higher-level QB to get to the next level. Jimmy G is average to above-average when healthy and he's rarely healthy.

The 49ers hit a wall today because they didn't upgrade at QB this season. The Rams did. The end.
