Not just Missy, but perhaps former associate head coach Kristen Cunnane as well?

Cunnane was not interviewed for the article by SJ Mercury News Group.
Missy Franklin denied an interview request.

Missy did in fact come back to Cal in 2016.
But she chose to be trained by Men's Coach, Dave Durden.

From the article. If this is true, Knowlton should be fired.

Quote:

Several Cal swimmers and their parents said they have complained about McKeever to Cal athletics director Jim Knowlton and to Jennifer Simon-O'Neill, the school's executive senior associate athletics director, and senior woman administrator. Those complaints have either been ignored or met with indifference, swimmers and parents said, or in one case dismissiveness.

Four Cal seniors on the 2021-22 roster recently met with Knowlton and Simon-O'Neill and alleged bullying and verbal and emotional abuse by McKeever, according to three people familiar with the meeting. Knowlton told the swimmers that McKeever was just a hard, tough coach.

Darla Carter, Danielle's mother, recalled requesting a meeting with Knowlton in the autumn of 2019.
"It was almost like talking to a wall," Carter said.

Knowlton, Carter continued, "said he wouldn't meet with me unless I was alumni, a graduate or wanted to donate money."

We really are the Bad News Bears. We need to reboot athletics at Cal. Given the impact of NIL along with our own issues, the status quo can't work.

Knowlton should be fired. Cal is not West Point, VMI or Air Force of a previous decade. He has been a really bad fit for Cal, especially at this time in history.

Knowlton and all senior administrators should be fired! Problem is that if they do that, the other incompetent people will just be promoted!

I'm afraid this goes well beyond Cal Athletics. I mean look at the graduation ceremony debacle. Sorry but Cal is going down hill and all respects. Next we will hear a bunch of blow hards saying rankings don't matter (or the criteria is faulty) when we became the 2nd best public uni in the world (we are already #2 in the US).

But... but.... according to a campus spokesperson (Elizabeth Costello) the school had been planning the graduation ceremony for a FULL YEAR .

"Overall this was a very successful event - - - members of our community were excited to celebrate in person and ultimately there were relatively few complaints," Costello said.

"This was one of the most successful commencement ceremonies that we've ever had."

I'm afraid this goes beyond Cal. The state of California is going downhill.

Isn't it true that the self funded sports programs at Cal pretty much run themselves, keeping the AD at a long arms length?

Knowlton needs be shown the door ASAP.....along with McKeever. Knowlton's handling of the men's basketball program was terrible by itself, but this is the straw that broke the camel's back.

Not even close to being true.
Not even close.

There's so much compliance that is involved that a head coach can't go to the bathroom unless they sign paper work in triplicate. There are a number of associate AD's who oversee a handful of sports, each. It's not like Knowlton is managing all 28 coaching staffs.

Don't forget the poor oversight of COVID policies that essentially caused the football team to give up a game and miss a bowl.

The comments allegedly made by Jennifer Simon-O'Neill are most troubling.
She's an Executive Senior Associate AD, and Chief of Staff & Senior Woman Administrator.
This is clearly not just about McKeever.

McKeever has been at Cal a long time. I'm surprised this is just now coming to light. Or maybe she just started "venturing off the rails" the last several years?

Curious if other Cal swim athletes will now come to her defense. The fact that they haven't thus far could be an indictment, or it could be that the investigative journalists weren't looking very hard for "the other side" (if there is one).

Our AD has some 'splaining to do.

Scott Carter, the father of swimmer Danielle Carter called McKeever "Teflon Teri. Nothing sticks to her".
That's a highly damaging reflection of our administrators in our Athletic Dept.

Never really heard much criticism concerning Coach M. Just the stuff about Missy. Winning those 5 NCAA titles and top 3 in 15 years straight sure seem to "paper over" the negative stuff.

This is basically what got Lou Campanelli fired. And that was back in the "anything goes" 20th century.

No way that there haven't been rumors of this swirling around. How could the Athletic Department not have had people out to observe her practices and talk to the student-athletes? I don't care how successful she's been, every college sports program has to answer to higher powers in the institution*. Crazy.

Any competent administrator thanks the parents for coming to see him, reassures them that he will look into it. Then announces trainings for all the coaches from The Positive Coaching Alliance or a similar group. Shoot, even the Haas school must have relevant management classes. He is just SO bad, such a bad fit for Cal in the last half century much less the future we are headed into. The answer is not buildings.

I should qualify this that I like Knowlton. The AD does exit interviews for athletes and he should know if things are going sideways with the women swim athletes. Either the allegations are overblown or Jim is not asking the right questions.

It hasn't even been a day since news of the allegations broke, therefore I think it is too early to say. I think it is stupid to expect former athletes to drop everything they are doing and jump on social media to defend their former coach. Most probably haven't even heard the news yet, and some very well may not be on social media (because social media is dumb).
