It's incredibly sad and telling that here in Southern California the local newspapers are giving Cal 1/2 pages devoted to this mess. Truly smells across the board. Right up there with women's gymnastics.

I hope we clean house, starting with Knowlton. We need great leadership at this critical time or we may not survive into the next decade.

Well after handing out all those $millions in extensions despite poor performance or even criminal abuse he received the longest extension of them all.

Her main job is academics and I have no idea how she is doing there, but her hiring and then lifetime extension for Knowlton is terrible for athletics, especially given this critical time in history.

If you want to hate on the Knowlton extension, have had it. But her support in terms of handling the stadium debt, the Grad certificate program, and the flexibility for Wilcox in recruiting lesser gpa players is pretty much unmatched at Cal in terms of a President supporting athletics.

Cal continued to give Teri McKeever pay raises despite bullying complaints (mercurynews.com)

McKeever's annual base salary has increased by more than 77% since 2010.
She's had 8 pay raises from 2010 - 2019.

"We were making complaints at that time," said Chloe Clark, a former Golden Bears swimmer, who also complained to Simon-O'Neill about McKeever's alleged bullying in the fall of 2019. "So, no I don't think the school listened to us."

"'Teri is producing Olympians, she's an Olympic coach. There's really nothing more I can do for you,'" Clark recalled Simon-O'Neill telling her during the 2019 meeting.

At least two dozen current or former Cal swimmers or their parents have complained about McKeever, either formally or in person, to Cal officials between 2010 and July 2022, according to university documents, emails and interviews.

"They deny, or say this 'it wasn't on my watch' stuff, especially Jim Knowlton," Scott Carter said referring to Cal.

jennifer neil-simon is not only a worthless bureaucrat but she's also far from my favorite human being

during my cal's monster class era (5,000,000+ views, the most read thread in the history of college basketball) i was around the athletic department on almost a daily basis, there were bears coaches from a dozen plus sports including but not limited to football, men's & women's basketball, etc. that knew teri mckeever was mentally abusing women's swimmers to the point of suicidal thoughts but that she was protected by jennifer neil-simon who continues to be protected by jim knowlton

note to greg richardson: please let me know if you would allow me to write a censor free article for this site re: mckeever/simon/knowlton and the athletic department's current path towards financial bankruptcy, ok?....let's have a honest conversation with bears fans/donors

I'm not for burying my head in the sand, but I'd be shocked if TM returns after the investigation. As for a hit piece on the athletic department in general, that's the last thing the school needs at this critical point in time.

On several levels, the Athletic Department has been failing for quite some time.

And they've been putting one Band-Aid after another on fundamental flaws.

And thing were tightened up accordingly....it was an over-reaction...prior to that, the policy has had ups and downs, but the most recent direction is giving more trust to the coaches to understand who might be able to deal with the Cal academic demands. Let's also not forget that the academic athletic counseling in place now is head and shoulders from where it's been. I don't really know if that's more of an accomplishment of Knowlton's, but there seems to be consensus that it's considerably better.

At the time it gave every apprearance of a man trying to preserve a lengthy good contract and reaching deeper in the academic well to do so. I believe the answer to your question is yes.

I'll give you the grad certificate, though really, that should be a no-brainer. The stadium debt is basically a subsidy from the general fund for Knowlton to then waste. I find the GPA issue tough to believe: maybe more lax then when Dykes was coach, but my impression is standards are tougher than in most of Cal's history. If Christ replaced Knowlton with a dynamic media savvy sports professional, then I'll buy. Otherwise she is just enabling a guy that is in over his head.

I'd like the truth as well. I'm hoping this isn't an issue in other sports. If so, would be a shame if this women's swimming issue somehow derailed the entire realignment process.

A couple things I noticed: 1) "Acting" Director implies temporary. Hopefully they are not leaving room to bring back McKeever and they come up with a permanent solution soon. 2) All the coaches are men. Hopefully we plan to add at least one female coach (or maybe they have a grad assistant?) for the women soon.

Maybe McKeever survives though I doubt it. But even if Cal wants to fire her, they can't hire her replacement until the investigation is done (due process). If they hired someone to replace her before completing the investigation, she has a probably valid claim that she was essentially/constructively fired and denied due process, etc.

I assume "acting" is simply the way of having someone assume the duties without going down that rabbit hole.

My assumption is that this is the permanent solution when McKeever gets let go. They needed to do this and have a path forward. It is not necessary that women have a female coach but I do think long term that would be a positive. Regardless putting the program under Dryden does two things - it allows them to pay him more, and therefore keep him, and allows both programs to move forward with a quality championship coach who is well respected and has coached both men and women to Olympic gold.

Nothing against the coaches.

I just think that female swimmers should have, at a minimum, a female GA that they can confide in and who can advise the coach as opposed to an all male staff, especially while traveling. This is just common sense and for everyone's protection (including the HC) and comfort in the "me too" era and for a department that has had multiple sexual harassment claims and a women's swim program that is already dealing with the issue as well as McKeever's verbal and psychological abuse. Not to mention Title IX and the university's commitments to gender equity.

I just think that this would not be a good permanent solution. I'd love to see one of Cal's women's swimming's big name, charismatic alums come back as an assistant and eventually take over the program.

What about a biological male who identifies as a female? Or someone who is gender fluid/binary?

This is kind of silly. The two people who apparently failed the female swimmers the most were female (McKeever/Simon-O'Neill). The bolded sentence is a real hoot - Simon-O'Neil "oversees gender equity and Title IX compliance, as well as the athletic and strategic communications unit." Apparently being female wasn't the answer.

The sex/gender of the person is far less important that the quality of the person. Let's get quality, competent people and fire people who are not.
