It's incredibly sad and telling that here in Southern California the local newspapers are giving Cal 1/2 pages devoted to this mess. Truly smells across the board. Right up there with women's gymnastics.

I wouldn't read into that ... This guy hands out extensions like Oprah does cars.

Well after handing out all those $millions in extensions despite poor performance or even criminal abuse he received the longest extension of them all.

Yup - I think Carol needs to go too. She's mailed it in.
If you want to hate on the Knowlton extension, have had it. But her support in terms of handling the stadium debt, the Grad certificate program, and the flexibility for Wilcox in recruiting lesser gpa players is pretty much unmatched at Cal in terms of a President supporting athletics.fat_slice said:calumnus said:fat_slice said:calumnus said:

note to greg richardson: please let me know if you would allow me to write a censor free article for this site re: mckeever/simon/knowlton and the athletic department's current path towards financial bankruptcy, ok?....let's have a honest conversation with bears fans/donors

I'm not for burying my head in the sand, but I'd be shocked if TM returns after the investigation. As for a hit piece on the athletic department in general, that's the last thing the school needs at this critical point in time.
And thing were tightened up accordingly....it was an over-reaction...prior to that, the policy has had ups and downs, but the most recent direction is giving more trust to the coaches to understand who might be able to deal with the Cal academic demands. Let's also not forget that the academic athletic counseling in place now is head and shoulders from where it's been. I don't really know if that's more of an accomplishment of Knowlton's, but there seems to be consensus that it's considerably better.movielover said:
Didn't Tedford eventually bring in a lot of sub-3.0 recruits?
At the time it gave every apprearance of a man trying to preserve a lengthy good contract and reaching deeper in the academic well to do so. I believe the answer to your question is yes.movielover said:

I would love to learn more about your insight into the Athletic Department on this issue.

I'd like the truth as well. I'm hoping this isn't an issue in other sports. If so, would be a shame if this women's swimming issue somehow derailed the entire realignment process.DiabloWags said:juarezbear said:

On several levels, the Athletic Department has been failing for quite some time.
And they've been putting one Band-Aid after another on fundamental flaws.
I'm all for ripping the Band-Aid off in search of the TRUTH
That's the only way that real change can come about.

Maybe McKeever survives though I doubt it. But even if Cal wants to fire her, they can't hire her replacement until the investigation is done (due process). If they hired someone to replace her before completing the investigation, she has a probably valid claim that she was essentially/constructively fired and denied due process, etc.calumnus said:DiabloWags said:

A couple things I noticed: 1) "Acting" Director implies temporary. Hopefully they are not leaving room to bring back McKeever and they come up with a permanent solution soon. 2) All the coaches are men. Hopefully we plan to add at least one female coach (or maybe they have a grad assistant?) for the women soon.

I assume "acting" is simply the way of having someone assume the duties without going down that rabbit hole.

My assumption is that this is the permanent solution when McKeever gets let go. They needed to do this and have a path forward. It is not necessary that women have a female coach but I do think long term that would be a positive. Regardless putting the program under Dryden does two things - it allows them to pay him more, and therefore keep him, and allows both programs to move forward with a quality championship coach who is well respected and has coached both men and women to Olympic gold.
What about a biological male who identifies as a female? Or someone who is gender fluid/binary?calumnus said:Oski87 said:

Nothing against the coaches.
I just think that female swimmers should have, at a minimum, a female GA that they can confide in and who can advise the coach as opposed to an all male staff, especially while traveling. This is just common sense and for everyone's protection (including the HC) and comfort in the "me too" era and for a department that has had multiple sexual harassment claims and a women's swim program that is already dealing with the issue as well as McKeever's verbal and psychological abuse. Not to mention Title IX and the university's commitments to gender equity.
I just think that this would not be a good permanent solution. I'd love to see one of Cal's women's swimming's big name, charismatic alums come back as an assistant and eventually take over the program.
