despite another year of potential eligibility jeewon park made the dumb decision to not join his teammates for the 2024 ncca national championship at la costa & then continue to develop his game in 2025 as a berkeley grad cert student playing in a dozen+ highly competitive collegiate tournaments

instead park opted to turn pro & played in his 1st tournament this week at the wigwam (west of phoenix) on the asher mini tour & missed the cut after rounds of 76 & 71...jeewon averaged 72.33 this season & is not listed in the top 250+ in the pga tour university rankings (sampson zheng is ranked #12 heading into the ncca finals with accelerated points available)

next week is the korn ferry tour 1st round qualifying tournament at the wigwam, good luck to jeewon but the truth is that tryna compete with the best golfers in the world too early in ur development is probably gonna leave u in a **** situation

2024 pga tournament at colonial: 2nd round update

the gil hanse renovated colonial is significantly much improved from an architecture standpoint (the green complexes are now more receptive to non aerial approaches, fairway bunkering modernized to current driving distances and the ugly azz concrete spillway running thru the course removed with the water hazards now much more naturalized) but make no mistake about it my beloved coore & crenshaw trinity forest in south dallas (the "wrong" side of town) is a much more fun & strategic design

and yeah the nasty hot humid weather with high winds & late afternoon lightning delay (texas weather is 100% beyond breaking bad 9-10 months of the year & is a major factor in the emergence of the university of calveston) didn't stop collin morikawa from hitting it to 2 feet for a tap in birdie on the completely redesigned par 3 16th hole en route to a battling 69 (despite 4 bogeys & only 53 feet in made putts) & is 3 under par and tied for 15th

max homa bounced back from yesterday's fiasco with a 69 (birdieing the gettable par 5 1st hole & then 17 pars) & michael kim shot a 70 (drove the ball better today hitting 11 out of 14 fairways) as both bears missed the cut

Having the Pac 12 TV Network helped to provide me with the opportunity to watch every Cal Football and Basketball game, so it's with some sadness that I'm watching its demise. I do make a lot of the home games in person, but I got kids who used to be little and now have activities and sometimes I need to watch from my living room.

It is worth remembering that before Pac-12 Network, there remained the possibility that some Cal games would not be shown on TV at all. This was especially true in the Tom Hansen era, when we had some stupid rules and exclusive windows that actively prevented it. So the conference network did fix that.

But as usual, we were still behind. The other major conferences were getting conference networks that partnered with other big media entities (Fox, Disney) who could get their networks national distribution on all the major carriers. Pac-12 Network never got that, so still there were a lot of people who couldn't watch the games unless they paid for two services.

in speaking with a utah mega whale donor (not the huntsman family) that's hosted me multiple times at the fabulous shooting star golf club in teton village wyoming, utah is academically aspirational & never wanted to be associated with big 12 truck stop skools

this got very little to do with money or even byu, this is about the utes quest to become a world class university (u can't do that being affiliated/playing in the same conference as arizona & oklahoma state), the university has invested a gazillion dollars in becoming a more respected research university & targeting top teaching talent

sampson zheng will be turning pro & will be competing for a us open spot at the june 3rd final qualifying tournament at lake merced along with teammate nathan wang & former masters participant michael weaver...hopefully another bear or two will be joining collin morikawa, max homa & ben an at the 2024 us open

after a year of acclimating to berkeley academics & a rigorous national collegiate golf schedule fully anticipate eric lee (5'11" 135 lbs) & ethan fang (6'1" 145 lbs) to be 1st team all acc standouts next season...both of the paper clip twins gotta add another 8-12 lbs of muscle this offseason, they excel on courses with minimal rough like pastatiempo, desert forest & bandon dunes but in order to compete on pga set up tournament courses with deep rough they need to continue to build core strength/clubhead speed to take the next steps forward in their virtually unlimited development...look for eric & ethan to potentially qualify & compete at this summer's us amateur at hazeltine in minnesota, the nightmare rough will be unreal in chaska in august

competing with eric & ethan for the #1 spot next season will be elite world amateur ziqin zhou from shenzhen china who has already competed in multiple dp pro tour events...the bears top 3 players will be as talented as any trio in collegiate golf...bet

it's expected that projected starters nathan wang & tony chen gained invaluable experience playing in a ncca championship & will work their azzs off this offseason in continuing their upwards golfing trajectories...and both daniel heo & charlie berridge gotta lotta upside & will compete for fall tournament slots via internal qualifying scores

and hopefully one or two of the rest of the roster players will emerge next season, perhaps senior papon sawatyanon or blueshirt freshmen tyler lee & sihao cong or incoming freshmen kai hirayama, matthew miyamoto & zhengfei han will emerge from the bear's lair ready to roll with a roar.....rrrrrrrrhhhhh!!!!!!
