Why do we need these TE's in Spav's system? Or, are we finally going the 'furd way and recruiting TE's to play OL?

My hope is Spav is going to incorporate the versatility of TEs as receivers and blockers in the AIr Raid. Especially in short yardage and the red zone. I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with.

ursine, that's an interesting question particularly as incoming true freshmen tackle nick morrow played tight end in high school & athlete frederick williams iii might be converted to guard, both are currently around 265 lbs...they both got potentially 4-5 years in berkeley to make an impact on the offensive line...on the other hand, recruiting portal tight ends to convert to the offensive line doesn't make a lotta sense from a transition timing perspective

right now the bears are looking for a 3rd tight end to emerge behind elijah mojarro who is the next under the radar jake tonges & all world talent jermaine terry who has yet to mentally put it all together despite his obvious physical upside

the pac 12's worst blocking tight end keleki latu will not be missed & team leader/special teams standout nick alftin was not offered a 6th year scholly

andy alfieri & jake muller have been buried on the depth chart heading into their 4th and presumably final seasons in berkeley...preferred walk on jack endries got more upside than both of those scholly players...pwo jeffrey johnson completed the 2022 te room which is gonna look a lot different moving forward with coach plough

so who's gonna be the 3rd tight end?

jake roberts is a big time talent but with only a 4 day portal transfer window of january 4th-8th open for official visits, logistically how is he gonna get from his 1st visit to arkansas on january 4th & his stated goal of 4 one day official visits to the left coast?...my take is that he will probably commit to the razorbacks (and a chunk of $ec nil money)

coach plough has extended a conditional offer to asher alberding (who had an offer from yale out of high school so at least he's academically qualified for berkeley), will be very surprised if that becomes an actionable offer for the mean greenies grad transfer who failed to catch a pass in either the 2021 or 2022 seasons, certainly hope tim got better recruiting abilities than that

the monster's take is that +1 athlete for his size/great hands true freshman ben marshall from shoney's high school in tennessee is gonna be the guy & will be utilized like stephen anderson as the 2023 3rd tight end

and don't forget big time talent te camden jones is the 1st commit for the 2024 class

Will be interesting to see what happens when ASU is put on probation. But then knowing the glacial pace of the NCAA that may not happen until 2033. But if the NCAA defies expectations and moves swiftly aren't players allowed another transfer for the team going on probation??

loosely edited transcript of cal grad herm edwards getting fired by chancellor crow & athletic director ray anderson (who is also his agent, kinda a conflict but whatever) in the endzone after losing by a couple of touchdowns to eastern michigan voc ed high school:

herm: what up guys, are we still tailgating later or what, how's that insatiable appetite?

ray: don't get emotional, herm, that ain't like you, you outta know i got a heavy heart but me and michael are gonna walk you to your car

herm: your getting cynical and that won't do, yesterday is still leaking from the roof, can we please be absolutely sure?

michael: herm baby, it's been nice

herm: is there gonna be a mirrorball for me?

ray (winking): yeah we gonna pay you your full contract, no negotiated buyout

herm: do you know the way to san jose?

nv, herm got walked to his car because of losing football games to terrible teams & also documentation that was sent to the ncca by a disgruntled graduate assistant (who is now at byu) including a foto of the head coach talking in a stairwell at the stadium with a prospect during the dead period & also plane tixs bought for prospects during the dead period by jaydn daniels moms who got reimbursed by her lover & all around bad guy defensive coordinator (in title only, marv lewis ran the d) antonio pierce

but in these times of rampant cheating (femi wuz tampered with by ucla) the ncca is heading towards deregulation...the ncca constitution wuz condensed & rewritten earlier this year with wording that "penalties imposed...do not punish players or student-athletes not involved nor implicated in the infractions"

college football is on a collision path with the nfl in terms of integrity & lawlessness

buckle up, baby

I think Cal is targeting mid year transfers at this time. Bank will be a Summer transfer if he comes at all. He can get into UCLA earlier as they are on the quarter system. I think they would take Bank as a Summer transfer but the focus right now is and needs to be on guys that are ready to enroll in January and particpate in Spring football.

6956, agreed that participation/development in cal's 2023 spring ball with new offensive line coach bloesch is ideal for learning the new o-line techniques along with the coach spav schemes

christy nkanu intends to make a decision right after his january 4th-8th transfer portal recruiting window for official visits, berkeley classes begin on january 17th...this is a critical recruitment for the program as the compete for the standout tackle who got the talent to be an impact immediate day one starter for the bears

my take which has been detailed in earlier posts is that if harvard's alec bank is accepted by stanford admissions, this is a done deal for a one way plane tix to palo alto & their devastated offensive line

very interested in the tracking the following spring ball news re: cal's monster offensive line

1) the health of o-line standout leader matthew cindric...in speaking with cindo's dad during the game in boulder re: his son's painful significant major injury & then with coach saffell on the floor at the last basketball game in haas it is clear that cindo did not tell the staff how messed up & in pain he wuz...in retrospect both matt & jack plummer were physically incapable of playing vs colorado, it tells you a lot about their quiet courageous determination to sacrifice themselves for their teammates that they played

2) now is the time for future hollywood sci fi oscar winning executive producer brian driscoll to move his gameday production from average to excellent...the monster has indicated he would like to see brian's attitude move from la jolla to national city this spring, it has been pointed out to me that driscoll had a couple of unnecessary violence penalties late in the season...still would feel a whole lot better about brian if he would rob a couple of convenience stores this offseason or something

3) how will coach bloesch assess the playing skillsets of cindo & driscoll, who will start at guard & who will start at center?

4) will poly bad azz sioape vatikani raise his game from an inconsistent guard to 1st team all pac 12?...the 4.0 gpa strongman got legit national football league upside & hopefully with a full true freshman season of a million mistakes under his belt is now ready to put it all together under coach bloesch's tutelage this spring...in sioape we trust, the bears interior offensive line could be excellent in 2023...but what about the tackles???

5) how much will brayden rhome weigh after another winter conditioning session with coach johnson (whose entire o-line room collectively lacked strength, bend, mobility & quick twitch movements during the 2022 season)?...the son of a ucla offensive lineman/current city of phoenix detective is recognized as arguably the hardest working guy in the o-line room but there's no way he can get played another season of getting bullrushed backwards at 285 lbs, right?

6) there is consensus among the staff that tj sessions gotta lotta upside that he didn't show last season as he made the transition from little league to the big leagues...tj is very thoughtful & introspective, will he fully reach his athletic potential with coach bloesch?

7) what about the 3 freshman tackles led by blue chipper with a dad's chip on his shoulder driving him on jackson brown competing for a starting/major playing rotation job?...are trent ramsey (285 lbs) & nick morrow (got more footspeed than anybody in the o-line room, 265 lbs) gonna show up 300+ lbs in order to compete as non undersized pac 12 tackles or what?

8) how's the health for huge upside interior lineman bastian swinney?

9) are everett johnson & ender aguilar ready to take huge strides forward in their kinda slow cooking croc pot developments?

10) will dylan jemtegaard & ryan lange or any of the o-line room preferred walk ons show up & surprise the world?

cal's monster offensive line is gonna determine the outcome of the 2023 season (just like it did during 2022) & following the clues this spring will be fun & revealing

Of the 13 guys in the room
- 5 returners who played regularly but who also have a mix of issues (weight, performance, injury, etc)
- 1 incoming frosh who likely won't be ready to see the field.
- 2 young guys who mostly didn't see the field last year but who project nicely
- 5 guys who haven't yet shown they are ready

When viewed from this perspective it's especially clear how desperately we need to add 3 guys to the room who can play just to get to a regular rotation of 8 to make it through a season. The room is very uncomfortably thin.

back in the day elite mcdonalds all americans like my yoga buddy jaylen brown, ivan rabb & jabari bird were among the 5,000+ daily views of cal's monster class...how do i know this?...they directly tole me & then their families/coaches confirmed with chuckles it wuz true

one of the recruiting advantages of the most effective social media recruiting tool in the history of college basketball wuz that there wuz no ncca mandated "dead periods" for the monster, cal's monster class wuz open for biz 24/7/365 kinda like the kinda sketchy (with parking in the rear) all niter 7/11 in berkeley

another huge advantage is that unlike professional college basketball coaches, the shockster don't got much of a social filter (which sometimes causes problems but whatever), the monster just says what he honestly thinks (tole the brunette girl next to me at nooner modern yoga yesterday that her long eyelashes look great kinda like a giraffe, she smiled & tole me thx u) without regards to embarazzment which wuz effective in calling out criminal dana altman, the donut boy of tuscon & rapist enabler steve alford

kinda funny story, a former member of sean miller's staff tole me that when cal battled arizona for recruits & the top spot in the pac 12 that miller wuz a daily reader of the monster...if you will recall the monster posted numerous unflattering fotos of the donut boy of tucson's expanding gut & triple chins along with his berating of players on the bench (the zeus talking back foto wuz classic)...so sean was unhappy with these fotos & spent the offseason using that as motivation to significantly slim down for the following season

yeah cal's monster class wuz a real ******* public service to the community (tuscon is a dump)

the magic of cal basketball (but will it ever return from its self imposed hibernation?)#

it is the monster's understanding that coach wilcox's mentor on the room distributions of the ncca max 85 schollys is former cal grad/nfl wide receiver matt bouza, that's why his cell phone screen always says "bouza," got it?

anyways justin ****** up the scholly room distributions early in his berkeley tenure, he tried to recruit like the "wisconsin of the west" with almost a dozen white high gpa positionless 6'4" tight end/linebacker body types (the evan weaver syndrome)...but that **** strategy didn't work out so great, they wuz too slow & "setting the edge" is no longer as valued as disruptive speed guys making plays behind the line of scrimmage, 6'1" 225 lbs 3.85 gpa cade uluave is the prototypical insider linebacker in today's college football speed game

so right now coach wilcox to his credit is rightsizing his room scholly allocations, there's gonna be less white slow as **** tight ends & linebackers riding the bench and more defensive backs & offensive linemen

last season the bears got only 14 schollys in the o-line room, that's not enuf with the developmental time necessary for the bigs...the goal is to rightsize this room to 16

how we gonna get there with coach bloesch?

right now we at 13 schollys (see the monster's thumbnail descriptions of each player in the post above re: the line)

signing immediate impact potential starting tackle christy nkanu this january gets us to 14

staff has confirmed to me they would like to sign another offensive lineman when the portal reopens after spring ball when another wave of portal entrants flood the transfer marketplace, that would be 15

during cal's summer bridge assigning +1 athletic 6'5" 265 lbs frederick williams iii to the o-line room gets us to 16

scholly math is fun#

anyways justin ****** up the scholly room distributions early in his berkeley tenure, he tried to recruit like the "wisconsin of the west" with almost a dozen white high gpa positionless 6'4" tight end/linebacker body types...but that **** strategy didn't work out so great, they wuz too slow & "setting the edge" is no longer as valued as disruptive speed guys making plays behind the line of scrimmage, 6'1" 225 lbs 3.85 gpa cade uluave is the prototypical insider linebacker in today's college football speed game

so right now coach wilcox to his credit is rightsizing his room scholly allocations, there's gonna be less white slow as **** tight ends & linebackers riding the bench and more defensive backs & offensive linemen

last season the bears got only 14 schollys in the o-line room, that's not enuf with the developmental time necessary for the bigs...the goal is to rightsize this room to 16

how we gonna get there with coach bloesch?

right now we at 13 schollys (see the monster's thumbnail descriptions of each player in the post above re: the line)

signing immediate impact potential starting tackle christy nkanu this january gets us to 14

staff has confirmed to me they would like to sign another offensive lineman when the portal reopens after spring ball when another wave of portal entrants flood the transfer marketplace, that would be 15

during cal's summer bridge assigning +1 athletic 6'5" 265 lbs frederick williams iii to the o-line room gets us to 16

scholly math is fun#
So the staff hopes to sign Nkanu. They would like to sign another after Spring practice. And they want to convert Williams to OL despite the fact that he has not played there before. Getting to 16 is nice. But actually recruiting guys that can play is what is important.

This hope, pray and project strategy is part of why the program is in the shape it is in today.

FWIW, when Jaedon Roberts first committed, there was tons of talk about which side of the ball they were going to put him on. That he went to the defensive side might have been his wish, I don't know, but I had a hunch that it might have reflected the staff's greater commitment to defense than offense (purely my reading into the situation). So, how has he done at NG/DT? Not bad, but not great. He might have been better at guard and maybe even had an NFL future there. OTOH, with last season's injuries, we needed every interior lineman we had.

If anyone would like some step-by-step instructions on how you too can be part (if you are not already) of the building of Cal's MONSTER offensive line (the future is almost now! Spring practices will be here before we know it and we should all attend one or two!), here goes:

1) https://calegends.com/donation/
2) Click Yellow "Donate" box under "Pay by Credit Card" section
3) Enter your email address & contribution amount (you can enter any amount of $10 or more if you select Custom Amount) and click the "I'd like to specify fund distribution box". Then you can select "Offensive Line"
4) Click black "Contribute" box.
5) Enter your credit card information and hit the blue "Pay" button!

Maybe you're already a Cal Legends subscriber but just want to throw a little New Year's gift towards this important position group or maybe you don't want to subscribe yet but still want to give a little something towards the big guys up front who are going to protect the QB and help create running lanes for our super dynamo RBs!
Go Bears!

big c, agreed that coach wilcox has over priortized the defense over the offensive in the past, downsizing the linebacking room while rightsizing cal's monster offensive line room to 16 scholly including hopefully +1 athlete frederick williams iii as an offensive lineman are important steps in his coaching maturation
