jb, gotta technical question to you as an educator:

do you think high school gpas are the best indicator/predictor (in terms of a single quantifiable metric) of future academic success at the #1 ranked public university in the world?

my whole life has been overly focused on gpas, when my daughters shay & taylor have introduced me to their dates i always ask "what's your gpa?"

if they say they don't know, that's the wrong ******* answer in the monster's world

the other day even asked my new rescue/foster doggy benji what's her gpa when we sat down on a rock during a hike up the mountain

she just looked me in the eyes & licked my face, that's the right answer

true love>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>high gpa>>>>>>>>>ged>>>>robbing gas stations with driscoll

I'll take this one, until jb checks in...

High school GPA is probably the single best predictor of success at Cal, but even better would be to look at a holistic profile. So many variables with GPA:

- different schools and different teachers within a school grade differently
- a kid can have one bad semester, or year, for a variety of reasons, that could wreck his/her GPA
- some kids, usually because their parents didn't go to college, never figured out how to "do" school

If I were considering a student-athlete's prospects for academic success, I might look beyond GPA to see if he/she had done SOMETHING to indicate the possibility of future success... test scores... overcoming hardships... holding down a part-time job during school, etc. There needs to be some evidence of likely future academic success.
fine. but we're talking thousands of apps. after screening for gpa, the borderline ones can be accorded this much time. and, in the end, i'll bet that gpa calls it 99% of the time, anyway. and, forget overcoming hardships - once word gets out that you're looking for that, every kid will have an overwhelming hardship story. you gonna check them out?

Correct, it's effectively impossible to do a deep dive for all Cal applicants. As this is a sports board, I am referring to a few dozen prospective student athletes who might have marginal GPAs. Looking for guys who, with some support, can eventually graduate.

Great video! $10,000 goes a lot farther in Minot. He should get a lot for his money if he doesn't save it for college. Back around 1978, I had a fellow Bowlesman sink a half court shot during halftime at Harmon. All he got was dinner for two at McDonalds. It was at least a McDonalds in Honolulu though. He gave it to his parents. Funny thing was that he said he just KNEW he would get picked to do the shot and had been practicing from half court for 2-3 months before hand.

I do not remember this. And I was in Bowles in 1978. In fact, I was President during Spring.

Hi Gordo! I remember you! I was in Bowles from 1975-1980. Probably looked for a Thing or two while you had custody, but never found it. We didn't run in the same circles, but I was Treasurer in Fall 1979 or Spring 1980 (forget which now - both?), so we no doubt had some interactions.

I'm not sure what year the shot happened, so that's why I said around 1978. I don't think it was my freshman year, but it could have been anytime during the 1976/77 and 1979/80 seasons. I don't think his half court shot got much attention beyond that day and it may have just been mostly with those of us who saw it. I remember it clearly because about a dozen or us stormed the court and did a lap around the court with him on our shoulders. I can't remember his name (I wasn't a close friend of his either) but when they did some modest earthquake safety work on Bowles one summer and installed the really ugly and completely out of character metal railings and handrails around the front of the building, he was the one who decided to demonstrate how he could walk along the top of the round railings. He fell and landed belly first on the railing and ended up with a ruptured spleen that needed surgery. People tended to call him Spleen after that.

michael kim just made a very interesting decision on the iconic par 5 18th hole at pebble beach

michael is tied for 9th in the final round of the tournament at 10 under par thx to a stellar current round of 5 under par...kim, like his 2 partners, hit his 2nd shot into the rough to the right of the green around 62 feet away...his 2 partners elected to play out in the near darkness, they are now done with the tournament & will likely leave the monterrey peninsula tonite

michael opted to mark his ball in the rough & will return at the crack of down tomorrow morning in the projected 40s cold & finish the hole by himself

why is he doing this?

kim is fighting to keep his pga card for 2024, he started this week #163 & thus far this week has moved up 53 spots to #110...the top 70 players will keep their cards for next season, so every shot counts

9th place all by itself pays $263,250...a birdie 4 would move him into a tie for 5th which pays all by itself $326,250...a sloppy bogey 6 would drop him to a tie for 13th which pays all by itself $191,150...and if he somehow chips this shot in tomorrow morning for an eagle 3 it literally changes the trajectory of his career...so this chip shot/putt(s) is worth well over a $100,000+, no need to rush

another factor is that he is not in the field like colin morikawa, max homa & james hahn at next week's phoenix open so there's no reason to rush out of town

ben an is currently tied for 40th with the world class short par 3th 7th & challenging par 4 8th & 9th holes to be completed tomorrow morning, he's currently #53 so he's also competing to keep his pga card

ben is also not in the phoenix open field due to its elevated status so he's currently got a 1:20 pm monday qualifier tee time at mccormick ranch golf course (5 minutes from modern yoga) which will reward the lowest 3 scorers with entry into the $20,000,000 phoenix open...fyi, former morikawa teammate bennett doyle of scottsdale made it thru the pre qualifiers & will be teeing it up at mccormick ranch at 7:55 am with amateur joe neuheisel (dad rick's home is around the corner)

so can an play his final 3 holes at the crack of dawn, sign for his scorecard & take a private plane (probably a shared flight with other golfers/caddies in the same predicament) to scottsdale and then make his 1:20 pm tee time?...it's possible logistically but with lousy weather on the monterrey peninsula who knows?

Brambles? Good Luck. I could care less who designs it, I drive by it routinely. It will be hotter than hell in the summer, (a huge absence of trees), there's no local lodging (35 minutes to Calistoga, the upper end of the Napa Valley)….. what they're asking for to join sounds stupid high, and the locals won't play it with Hidden Valley next door.

alky, my only idol in life is bill coore, he is the claude monet of golf course architecture & arguably the most gifted architect in the history of the game with the coore & crenshaw (designers of sand hills) timeless & classically minimalist style (no homes, no cart paths, no fake water hazards, no gaps between holes, etc.)

the money behind brambles is cal grad eric berridge, his son charlie is on the golf team...and the club manager is gifted c&c team member james duncan who fully understands the magic of a tightly routed walkable links with your bag over your shoulder without a scorecard

brambles is the most exciting new golf course opening in california since cypress point

Shocky, given where Brambles is, do you think they might draw a membership similar to Mayacama?

jeff, my take is that while mayacama is attractive to wealthy bay area residents that seek luxury on site ritz carlton level casita accommodations & the club's remarkable wine cellar/collection the vast majority ride in golf carts thru the hilly over watered routing before retiring to the spectacular clubhouse for drinks, etc....brambles, on the other hand, will be targeting more of a national/international pure golfer that walks every round on a firm/fast links design without fancy amenities or any on site housing which is way more my vibe

my 1st visit to mayacama (which is one of the nicklaus groups best designs, a kinda backhanded architectural compliment, the inclusion of 5 par 3s & 5 par 5s make it more fun than most of jack's overly penal work) included range time with then member joe montana...we talked about our kids mostly, what wuz most memorable about our conversation is that he literally could not turn/rotate his head more than 2 inches because of neck injuries...many fans of the nfl fail to grasp that these gladiators live painful lives for years after due to all of the violent collisions that take a serious toll upon their bodies/mental psyche...joe asked a lotta questions re: my world top 100 travels & said he would love to do that too but his body wouldn't allow him to travel that much

alky, what are the summer temps in middletown...looking at a napa county map it seems like it's at elevation, high above a windy road from calistoga, right?...and as a links design with few trees except on the surrounding hillsides, wouldn't the nor cal breezes keep it pleasant on a breezy day?
Shocky, that area is almost, but not quite, Central Valley weather. The coastal breezes don't make it that far inland, because of the coast range near Bodega Bay and the Mayacamas Mountains between the Russian River and Clear Lake. It pretty regularly gets into the 90s with a bit of humidity in the summer.

I know about it, but never played there. I'm a pure public course guy, of necessity. Home course is Baylands Golf Links, the Palo Alto city course that Forrest Richardson remodeled in 2017. But I'm really interested in golf course design, and have a thousand-volume golf library that's weighted toward that subject. Basically, your golf life is something I'd love to do, if I had the time and money to do it.

I find the whole Brambles project a little odd. I know the area, because I lived in Lake County for three years, and worked for the newspaper there. I doubt there's any sand on that property, so it seems an odd place to try and build a golf mecca. Certainly no one is going to go there for anything but the golf (maybe some bass fishing), since the only nightlife in the vicinity is the Indian casino in Middletown. It's a pretty area, but it still seems an odd location choice, especially since the nearest similar project, Tom Doak's nine-hole remodel at Aetna Springs, is still closed.

jeff (that's quite the library collection), my interest in golf course architecture started as a caddie during my stinson beach high school & cal days at the strategically fascinating (and also very playable unlike the o-club's lake course) san francisco golf club, being a lifelong student of golf course architecture is one of my great passions in life

architect forest richardson lives in phx (his daughter haley lu is on hbo's white lotus) & is very imaginative with his hallmark wildly contoured greens, if you love baylands you should check out his renovation at peacock gap too (would be more than happy to tee it up with you there on the morning of a cal football evening gameday this fall)

tom doak tole me recently that while the maha napa resort is pretty dead now that there's now new ownership of the wonderfully intimate aetna springs resort & timeless 9 holer in pope valley that hopes to reopen by 2026 which would bring a lotta much needed jobs to the area, tom still got his layout plans for the next door 18 hole lake lucinda project which got voted down by local politicians

brambles is definitely off the grid but the great lesson taught by sand hills & the bandon dunes resort is that if you discover pure golf expereinces without any fake earth movement that resonate with players in a magical/spiritual authentic way, then they will come...it's kinda like true love in that sense

Rector Reservoir provides Yountville's water, in drought times it's tense but everywhere in Cali will have some water rationing from time to time.

It's 46 miles from Berkeley, so pretty ideal for you to commute to. Amazing location for what you get with food, drink, recreation.

Model N has chill management and it's more a breakfast/lunch place. Your schedule for the Bears will be accommodated

he's already had how many years to put on the muscle? And, how would he keep it on after mid-season? And, how do you coach aggression into a player?
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?

russian, literally everybody in the o-line room playing rotation (other than those that are injured) loses weight during the playing season, there's a lotta wear & tear and fatigue so meaningful weight gains gotta happen in the offseason

very optimistic that the king of the hill intense coach bloesch (unlike the much more west coast easygoing angus who didn't always have his eye on the details while driving back & forth between his home in reno) is working with brayden rohme & presumably brian johnson in devising a plan that involves s&c work, nutrition (rohme gotta fast metabolism like his moms) & the very underrated necessity of sleep to get his weight numbers right

as for coaching up aggression, sat by future head coach in waiting mike saffell at the monster's stormin' the floor basketball victory at our haas (be both be biz ad grads) & asked him exactly that question re: coaching up aggression for brian driscoll...mike pointed out to me that brian had several violence on the field penalties late in the season & that actually playing with controlled aggression wuz the real goal

in any case, the last minute of the video below includes a snippet of the many conversations that me & brian had last week at san diego gas stations while we successfully moved his attitude form la jolla to national city, we are both being vigorously defended by vandalus on all them bogus robbery charges...yeah we are both gonna follow her on instagram

michael is tied for 9th in the final round of the tournament at 10 under par thx to a stellar current round of 5 under par...kim, like his 2 partners, hit his 2nd shot into the rough to the right of the green around 62 feet away...his 2 partners elected to play out in the near darkness, they are now done with the tournament & will likely leave the monterrey peninsula tonite

michael opted to mark his ball in the rough & will return at the crack of down tomorrow morning in the projected 40s cold & finish the hole by himself

why is he doing this?

kim is fighting to keep his pga card for 2024, he started this week #163 & thus far this week has moved up 53 spots to #110...the top 70 players will keep their cards for next season, so every shot counts

9th place all by itself pays $263,250...a birdie 4 would move him into a tie for 5th which pays all by itself $326,250...a sloppy bogey 6 would drop him to a tie for 13th which pays all by itself $191,150...and if he somehow chips this shot in tomorrow morning for an eagle 3 it literally changes the trajectory of his career...so this chip shot/putt(s) is worth well over a $100,000+, no need to rush

another factor is that kim (like byeong hun an) is not in the field like colin morikawa, max homa & james hahn at next week's phoenix open so there's no reason to rush out of town

michael kim made the right decision marking his ball in the rough in the looming darkness last nite

so michael warmed up this morning on the adjacent peter hay practice facility, no need to hit any drivers or other clubs as part of his usual pga warm up routine...my guess is that he found a practice spot in the rough exactly 62 feet away from the hole chipping towards the ocean to replicate the upcoming shot on the 18th hole & hit 50+ chips until he had the distance 100% dialed in

at exactly 8:00 am the pga start of play siren went off, playing by himself michael chipped it 3 feet away & made the birdie putt for a stellar final round of 66 at pebble beach, 11 under par for the week & a $218,250 paycheck

during the past year michael has reworked his swing so now his drives are a gentle draw which is giving him much additional yardage off the tee & also greater accuracy in hitting more fairways

and michael if & when cal's monster class ever returns for the basketball program ur gonna be the 1st to know, ok?

He's now inside the FedEx top 125 to keep his card, but there's a long way to go. He's got 106 points. Ricky Fowler finished 125th last year with 323 points. He's got to make the cut whenever he gets a chance to play.

james arthur knowlton update:

attorney thomas newkirk is filing a lawsuit against the university of california, berkeley on behalf of the evil as **** teri mckeever & made the following comment:

"Jim Knowlton, why he is apologizing to athletes when he knew how Teri coached the entire time he was there is beyond me. It makes no sense."

what also makes no sense is this site not interviewing him (he is the only athletic director in the nation that has failed to make a twitter post in the last 18 months) & calling him out (the current men's basketball coach is not the root of all the problems, fox is exactly who we all thought he is)

u would have to be dumb as **** if u think knowlton is earning his annual $1,300,000+ salary & therefore donating to the athletic department to fund his paychecks

tell the con artist to **** off#

jeff, the pga made a major change in the requirements for retaining the coveted pga tour card for the 2024 season, now only the top 70 (in the past it's been the top 125) players in the the current 2023 fed ex rankings are gonna keep their cards

colin morikawa (now ranked #7 in the world) & max homa (just moved up to #12 in the world) are locks to keep their pga cards, byeong hun an is in good shape at #55 in the fed ex standings, michael kim gotta lotta work at #116 & james hahn at #177 is in trouble

it should be pointed out that the 2 california colden bears that moved from north scottsdale to colder climates have seen their pga play take precipitous nosedives in hahn (now lives in the texas hill country) & brandon hagy (now lives in charlotte)

100% accurate. What is unclear to me is how the heck do you get rid of this moron? This makes Christ complicit in everything we have been blaming Knowlton on for the past several years.

econ, the 78 year old chancellor christ has done more for cal athletics than any chancellor in our lifetimes, denigrating her makes no sense...her only mistake wuz being lied to by the con artist re: the northwestern athletic director interviewing process which resulted in his contractual extension to 2029

those criticizing carol tend to be casual fans that don't really understand all she's done, it's a false narrative repeated by the uninformed

both jennifer simon-o'neil & the con artist will potentially be terminated because of their roles in the mckeever debacle
