special teams update:

6956, coach barton & coach wilcox are gonna continue to award 3 special teams schollys, walk ons will continue to be a big part of this room moving forward

punter:

jamieson sheahan finished 15th in the nation in punting with a 45.27 average with accurate corner kick placements & got additional coveted intangibles such as the unreal ability to kick with both feet & also make physical australian football tackles in coverage...jamieson got a legit chance as an undrafted free agent to win a nfl roster spot & earn some serious kangaroo coin
https://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/individual/17

tulsa grad transfer with a management major lachlan wilson from eaglemont australia is gonna be the scholly punter for the 2023 season...lachlan redshirted in 2019 & with a 2020 covid year got 2 years of remaining eligibility...depending upon how the upcoming season plays out lachlan could either return for just the fall semester of 2024 or pursue an undrafted free agent nfl roster spot after the 2023 season

fellow australian from north of melbourne (the epicenter of australian golf is the ethereal sandbelt region with royal melbourne & kingston heath as world top 25 courses) ethan baxter (#34 in top foto) blueshirted as a true freshman preferred walk on this season, ethan has yet to play in an american football game

the #2 ranked punter in the 2024 class kanyon floyd from phoenix will be visiting for cal's 2024 junior day on saturday march 4th...with a 4.73 gpa & an academically focused family, stanford would be the competition (duke, vandy & washington are recruiting him too) but the cards got their punter/kicker of the future in 2023 aidan flintoft from oaks christian...possibilities with kanyon include a full scholly offer, a greyshirt scholly (kinda like offensive tackle nick morrow from flagstaff who enrolled in berkeley this january) or a pwo offer (which imo will not work)

kicker:

a factor in the losses in both boulder & south bend wuz the cal field goal unit getting out kicked by the competition...the monster feels very strongly that now asu kicker (reunited with charlie ragle) dario longhetto should've never been the bear's starting kicker last season, 4.37 gpa true freshman michael luckhurst (#38 in top foto) with his powerful leg & instant high trajectory (unlike longhetto's low rising line drives) is gonna be a nfl kicker someday like his dad mick

slightly built but big leg 2023 pwo mateen braghani from san diego will arrive in berkeley this summer

longsnapper:

2023 starter slater zellers is gonna be joining dario & charlie in tempe in order to make room for longtime silent commit 4.0 gpa david bird who is a generational talent that got the upside to be a 10+ year nfl pro bowl veteran

the bears are very deep at this position with rocket bottle cap launcher walk on jake arguello (#47 in above foto) & 3.7 gpa pwo wesley brown from the san mateo college fightin' benjis

special teams recruiting update:

high school all american & the nation's #2 ranked punter kanyon floyd from horizon school in phx got the vip recruiting treatment from coach barton during cal's 2024 junior day

after saturday in berkeley kanyon (4.73 gpa) & his moms flew to michigan as an invited guest of coach harbaugh for the wolverines junior day, this is an elite talent that needs to be offered a scholly for the fall of 2024 or as a greyshirt (kinda like flagstaff's nick morrow) if lachlan wilson returns for a 2nd season with the bears

the plan right now is for kanyon to showcase his cannon foot (he can also do field goals & kickoffs) during cal's specialist and 7 on 7 team camp on saturday june 4th...it should be noted that none of the visitors this last saturday did any football work on the field

an elite punter can change field position multiple times a game, kanyon floyd got the upside to be the next nfl punter like bryan anger
I am not in agreement regarding the scholarship use on these roles. But in the end I really only care about winning games. So if they are going to carry 3 scholarships then these players need to be among the best in college football.

Zellars was said to be elite when he joined the program. He was not elite. In fact he was replaced for the better part of a season by Cindric. Who immediately improved the short snapping for the balance of that season.

Ethan Baxter was supposed to be a scholarhip worthy player. Yet the staff brought in a transfer (Wilson) to handle those duties and are now trying to recruit the next "elite" HS punter in Floyd.

I was all for the scholarship for Luckhurst. He has the look of a great threat. You need to be able to feel secure that points are in the bag once you pass the opponents 40. Never had that feeling with Longhetto. His kicks were less flat this past season, but he was simply an average college kicker. There were many around the nation similar to Dario that were not on scholarship.

I also do not care about their GPA's. I expect every Cal recruit to not be a "dumbazz". I assume if Cal is recruiting them they are qualified as a student.

6956, if the premium site(s) tole you slater zellers wuz "elite" or that ethan baxter wuz "supposedly scholarship worthy," that's on them (and ur believing them), maybe u should get a refund or something???

regarding special teams:

1) the monster is the only voice that has said that dario longhetto should've never started ahead of michael luckhurst, that will become ridiculously clear to bear fans as the 2023 season unfolds...basically the staff wasted a year of michael's eligibility on kickoffs

2) david bird is the nation's #1 ranked longsnapper in the 2024 class & considered a generational talent by those that mentor/evaluate long snappers for a living...if you wanted to bet today which california golden bear is the most likely to have a 10+ year career as a pro bowler in the nfl, bird would be your best bet

3) cal's 2024 high school class is only gonna be targeting around 8-10 student athletes...because of the importance of field position if the #2 ranked punter kanyon floyd goes into bryan anger management mode at memorial stadium during the june 4th specialists camp, then floyd should be extended either an actionable offer or a greyshirt scholly offer (kinda like nick morrow) if lachlan wilson ends up returning for the 2024 season (which is unknown at this time as it will be contingent on his performance this fall)

very disappointed that brian driscoll opted not to talk about my role during the san diego pga tournament helping him move his attitude from la jolla to national city during our multiple stop gas station robberies & ensuing conversations about 91 premium

but driscoll (history major with an eye on producing oscar winning adventure sci fi movies in the future) is a candid/terrific interview & its great to him share his player specific insights (shout out to jim mcgrill for asking about individual players)...nick morrow is "really showing up in january during work outs" & "for how young he is that he's so mature and showing really good progression"...trent ramsey & jackson brown are "definitely maturing with football, their bodies and their personalities, just great guys to be around"...sioape vatikani "played a lot last year, continuing to develop"

important to note brian feels "the strength and conditioning program really pushed us this winter"..."greater emphasis upon conditioning, lot more fast paced, and making sure we get to the line and making sure when we get to the fourth quarter we're still ready to go still pushing around defensive linemen"..."kinda more endurance weight training and definitely more conditioning"

"today I played left guard and center"..."will play whatever position that helps"..."everybody works left and right handed stances, coach bloesch agrees that's really important"

"we have a really great locker room, everyone loves being in the locker room"

my hearing is ok not great, why is he referring to sioape vatikani as "vossi?"

major cal's monster offensive line recruiting news:

6'4' 305 lbs 1st team all american athletic conference left guard cam'ron johnson from the university of houston (originally shadow creek high school in pearland, texas where he wuz a track & field standout) entered the portal this afternoon & wuz offered by coach bloesch offered within minutes

the iron man started all 13 games at left guard with only 1 sack on the season & zero pressures in 34 attempts during the independence bowl victory for the cougars, this is an immediate high impact elite prospect that is already known to coach bloesch & coach spav

cam'ron is a grad transfer that can be immediately recruited, that's why he don't got to wait until the portal reopens in may for those that don't got their college degrees...getting johnson on an official visit to berkeley is a huge priority for the staff

yeah coach bloesch is the most intense, demonstrative & loudest bear on the staff (and only a couple decibels quieter than the monster on gamedays)

Can we just make the simple/no-brainer hire and go with Pasternack?

Sure, there are some outside-the-box candidates that would be nice hires (i.e. Dusty May, Amir Abdur-Raheem, Ryan Odom) but a) I don't trust Knowlton to make a successful "interesting" hire, and b) most of those coaches have minimal ties to the West Coast and/or would be top candidates for more attractive openings.

Pasternack ticks every single box of what we shoul be looking for in our next HC. No need to complicate this.
4thGenCal said:
Agreed 100% 1) Several large Donor's endorse him and will provide significant NIL monies 2) Solid west coast recruiting ties (Oakland Soldiers/Prolific Prep - plus Africa recruiting prowess connections 3) Proven fund raising record (raised $10M personally in his tenure of 5 seasons at UCSB) 4) Has backing of key agents (Bill Duffy, Calvin Andrews, Omar Wilkes) and support from several past Cal player alums (Sean Marx, Leon Power, Ryan Anderson, Richard Midgely, Theo Robertson to name a few) 5) Proven record of winning/turnaround program at UCSB) 6) Wants the job and sees this as his ultimate job - not a stepping stone. Yet a few people make a big deal at a "non event" of a reflex leg kick that was a nothing burger - Bottom line, Pasternak would restore the program to legitimately competing for conference titles. He is all about winning and expects nothing less from himself and his staff. As a bonus it is very likely that a key UCSB guard (all conf Big West) would follow Him where ever He ends up. Yet - JK may not want to feel He was forced into a decision that was not his own. Make no mistake about JK, He is a tough/obstinate AD, who will not be leveraged into a decision based solely on donation level. JK will make the decision He believes is best - and in concert with Jason Kidd/Sean Marx, Sharif Abdul Rahim support. Personally it is a must for the new coach/staff to control the Bay Area in recruiting - Cannot let top local prospects go elsewhere - Having tight and loyal developed relationships with the key programs locally, is a key strength of Pasternack. Finally JP knows the obstacles/hinderances of Cal - there are no surprises and He understands the landscape. Let's hope JK gets the hire correctly as its a defining moment for sure.
+1 4th gen on the money as usual, hiring bod's lou richie as a life/academic mentor coach would favorably impact nor cal recruiting relationships both in high school & portal bounce backs to the bay that didn't wanna play for the last 2 coaches...joe also got a good relationship with ben braun

shareef's support is important with his ability to support nil & also foreshadow jaylen brown's support at last of the program, his next contract is likely to be the nba max $290,000,000 payout

player development will be a strength with pasternack, more than half the guys this season got broken down shooting mechanics that need to mentored this offseason as soon as possible

joe is a player's coach, cal will be a player's program unlike fox who wuz disliked/not respected by the vast majority of the players per their families/former coaches, do not confuse fear with likeability

ajay mitchell of the gauchos would be a potential impact transfer, 15.2 ppg on 49.4% who facilitates his teammates with 5.1 assists per game...the days of unwatchable no movement hero ball will be over in berkeley

ucsb is 24-7 & plays cal poly tonite on espn+

Shocky, the same folks that believe Bird is elite (Kohls camps) rated Zellars the #1 long snapper in the nation the year he graduated. Now Bird may be a better prospect, but the idea that Zellars was not a very highly regarded (dare I say elite) prospect is absolute revisionist history.

I simply do not share the same philosophy regarding scholarships for long snappers that you do. When Cal starts winning more games utilizing this philosophy I may change my belief. But until they start recruiting better HS QBs, pass rushers, OL I will maintain that longsnappers and punters may be better suited as PWO's and given scholarships after showing what they can do. Which is what many (most) of the better programs in the country generally do.

Many previous STs players at Cal came as walkons and some made the NFL despite their initial walkon status. Placekickers I have a somewhat different view on as they score points. And the ability to provide touchbacks on kickoffs is a huge help to the defense and reduce injuries as the majority of kickoffs are not returned.

I just remember how once Cindric took over snapping on the short snaps the snapping issue was put to rest. Despite how little formal training he received prior to his playing at Cal. It can be done. I also am somewhat skeptical regarding the Cal STs generally under Wilcox. They have been routinely poor to below average and have no dedicated coach. Barton may be fine, but JW has other staffers as the game day STs coaches.

I hope you are right regarding Bird. I expect no snafus from this generational talent.

great kid from a great family but he don't got the steely determination of david bird who is a generational talent that barring injury will be a nfl pro bowler...you can remind me in a couple of years of this projection, ok?

and that's why none of the "insiders" knew david bird wuz a silent commit to the bears since last summer, basically the staff's plan (which they didn't share with nobody except the monster) all along wuz to encourage both zellers & dario longhetto to move along despite their remaining eligibility (both are now sun devils reunited with charlie ragle) for significantly superior talents in bird & michael luckhurst to earn schollys this fall

my prediction is that in 2024 (and potentially beyond) coach barton's room will be the #1 ranked special teams unit in college football with 3 scholly future legit nfl prospects

and that's how you win close games

5. Cuonzo Martin, former Cal and Missouri head coach
Why Cal would hire him: The Bears are just 54-134 (22-92 in Pac-12 play) since Martin left Cal for Missouri in 2017, which only makes all he accomplished in Berkeley a .614 winning percentage, an NCAA Tournament appearance, a top-three draft pick in Jaylen Brown look more impressive. With Martin currently unemployed, Cal might want to see if he can build another winner in the Bay Area.

Why Cal wouldn't hire him: Martin didn't always get along with administration during his time with the Bears, which might be why he surfaced in multiple coaching searches before leaving for Missouri. There are no guarantees he'd want another go-around in Berkeley. And even if he did, Cal might have a hard time overlooking his underwhelming tenure with the Tigers.

Others listed

1. Pasternack
2. Miles
3. Kyle Smith
4. Decuire

Other names to consider: Santa Clara's Herb Sendek, Portland's Shantay Legans, former Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak, Loyola Marymount's Stan Johnson, UC Irvine's Russell Turner, and UC Riverside's Mike Magpayo.

hoop dreams amigo, coach martin did a lotta things that are not comprehended by casual uninformed fans like ursine & civil bears but more importantly also not by the self serving clueless as **** con artist, consider:

final four talent: your 100% correct, if silent commitment caleb swanigan's guardian roosevelt barnes had signed his letter of intent, we had potential big dance national championship talent with a starting line up of caleb at the 5, young ivee at the 4, jaylen at the 3, the bird at the 2 & t-wall at the 1 with j-mat as a scoring machine 6th man and kam & the king sharing back up post duty minutes

returning talent: if his oldest son 3.67 gpa joshua had been cleared by berkeley admissions off the wait list, the bears team the following year had a public commitment from jemarl baker who flipped to kentucky & a silent commitment from frenchman olivier sarr who flipped to wake forest & later kentucky along with leading for mcconald's all american jordan brown plus the porter fam deal with the nation's #1 ranked prospect would've continued the elite talent level in berkeley

recruiting: coach martin wuz the most effective head coach recruiter in the history of cal basketball (and football), he was tireless in approaching the top high schoolers in the nation in selling berkeley's reputation as the #1 ranked public university in the world, he understood the value of academics & moms trusted him as a black father figure/mentor with their sons...cuonzo loved these young men & treated them with respect while instilling in them an expectation of physical intensity

recruiting angles/energy: coach martin understood how building trusting relationships & being visible 100% of the time on the summertime aau circuit wuz critical to targeting mcdonalds all americans...like coach montgomery he gave cal's monster class full access to his staff as a recruiting/gameday energy facilitator that could successfully attack opposing coaches like criminal dana altman, the corrupt donut boy of tuscon & ucla's rapist enabler steve alford

staff: cuonzo's 1st target upon accepting the cal position wuz offering the lone open assistant coach position to bishop o'dowd's lou richie who appreciated the offer but tole me he couldn't accept because of conflict of issues with ivan as his player, this wuz pure mastery by coach who then pivoted to hire recruiting dynamo (and dumb azz) yanni...and yeah the porter fam deal would've sent seismic shockwaves thru the collegiate basketball recruiting world for those who thought the ivan & jaylen diamonds are forever class wuz a fluke one off deal, nope biz as usual in berkeley

staff recruiting energy: coach martin surrounded himself with likable mostly young guys that recruited 24/7/365 that could build meaningful relationships with young black men & their families/coaches...the current staff at 200+ years is the oldest college basketball staff in the nation, that's something that's lost on the beacon of truth & the dumb as **** con artist

s&c: look at the nba bodies of the bird, t-wall & j mat, s&c coach nicodemus christopher wuz the greatest s&c coach in the history of cal athletics, he got guys nba right & unlike the current football s&c program listened to shocky & incorporated yoga as part of the development process to ensure bend, flexibility & quick twitch movements...nico & his curvy brunette yoga female wife fallon currently live in denver (my daughter shay is a 1st year at denver law) & he's successfully training nba players...the current bb players (kinda like last season's cal's monster offensive line) move like granite statues on valium

study center: coach martin fully embraced the hard working professionals/educational mentor at the study center & this respect wuz reciprocated which is important for working together on academic silver bullet prospects with berkeley admissions

nutrition & sleep: this wuz a big deal to cuonzo & shocky, guys playing video games late at nite at 4th genbear's bb house while eating doritos wuz a problem that wuz being addressed, the monster wuz a big proponent of turning off all internet services after 11:00 pm

selling tixs: coach martin embraced this important aspect of serving as a head coach...the 1st time the monster spoke to cuonzo & tracy webster they asked me what do we have to do to get more fans into haas?...tole them we needed an asian walk on so tracy & me put together a list of high gpa bay area asian ballers & this resulted in future son in law brendan glapion...shocky also tole them we need to connect with students that didn't already go to games, this resulted in cuozno speaking at dorms & the greek system along with shooting hoops with players & students at sproul plaza during the lunch hours on game weeks, can you even imagine the current head coach doing that?...bottom line, we averaged nearly 11,000 fans (many of whom had no affiliation with the university of california, warriors tixs are financially beyond the means of most bay area basketball fans)

students: coach shared my strongly held belief that berkeley students (and bay area high schoolers) should be offered free admission to every game just by showing a student id card at the gate...the thoroughly unqualified markeisha everett's beyond breaking bad plan to move the students to behind the basket would've never gained any traction...let's be honest, mark fox & the con artist just don't care in building a future base of season tix fans/donors like eastcoastcal as long as their $1,900,000+ & $1,300,000+ salary weekly deposits show up on their bank statements every friday

nil: cuonzo would've raised millions from donors including shocky with his passionate requests for 100% buy in to support our top 20 program & yeah the cal's monster class as the most read thread in the history of college basketball fan message boards with 5,000,000+ views would be leading this charge

practice facility: this would've been already built, a modest men's & basketball facility in the haas parking lot with then doug goldman's lead $10,000,000 donation...done, team would be practicing in it today...instead bishop o'dowd just opened a $40,000,000 basketball/performance arts facility while the con artist is showing disinterested donors his time share architectural renderings of his $125,000,000+ (with change orders) quidditch facility that's never gonna get built

housing: with coach martin leading the charge, more donors would be supporting the benevolent 4th gen bear's heroic housing purchases for la casas poquito which are absolutely cute as **** and only a block or two away from haas

cal's monster class: my streak of 150+ home & away basketball games would still be intact, there's zero chance cuonzo would've allowed this energy to be censored/terminated...eric mcdonough could've been part of the inclusive berekely party that welcomed everybody but he would not have been the sole replacement on the program's destructive path to apathy

stormin' the floor: coach martin tole me multiple times he 100% loved the fan celebrations at the center of the universe, midcourt at haas (he did caution me to direct traffic to ensure we never got near the vanquished team's bench & players as they departed the court to avoid conflict/disrespect/pac 12 failure to control the crowd fines)

academics: remember taylor & me speaking with cuonzo along with steve & nick kerr prior to the year end team banquet in a quiet area, he wuz sincerely more proud of the 1000 apr than anything that happened on the basketball court...his players academic dreams & successes were cherished as he considered these young men as part of his & roberta's extended family

the magic of cal basketball (what's ur palace?)#
philbert, cuonzo & roberta martin are currently living outside of orlando in an upscale community & very focused on the lives of their 2 sons chase (missouri) & joshua (purdue)...coach is a cancer survivor & knows our time on planet earth is limited so returning to coaching would require a pretty special situation...at age 51 martin is probably too old for the relentless 24/7/365 high school/portal recruiting & nil/practice facility fundraising that will be necessary for the california golden bears to become a nationally ranked team again...if would make sense for shareef on behalf of the con artist to reach out & gauge any potential interest

so let's examine the other names on connor's made up list, ok?

tim miles: 56 years old retread white guy (90%+ of all p5 men's basketball players are black, jaylen brown tole me he tried to explain the importance of a black father figure/mentor to the con artist at a football game but that knowlton didn't understand what he wuz saying) with zero connections to berkeley...hard pass not even worth an interview

kyle smith: very good coach & savvy recruiter but he's also a 53 year old white guy in the midst of a 6 year contract with washington state that pays $1,500,000+ a year in inexpensive pullman...smith got bay area connections so it's worth a phone call to see if he's interested in the position

travis decuire: a successful recruiter/player's coach who covered up hall of famer mike montgomery's weaknesses in both of these areas...but now he's 52 years old, should be interviewed by this coaching search advisors...100% an outstanding human being who cares about his student athletes, moms trust him

herb sendek: nice guy, terrible recruiter who's 60 years old...basically the non azzhole version of mark fox...hard pass not even worth an interview

shantay legans: 41 year old former bear who has been very successful at the mid major level, should be interviewed in person to hear his gameplan

larry krystkowiak: another 58 year old white guy who is a disciplinarian & outdated for today's modern college basketball, sorry monty

stan johnson: 43 years old born in west africa, no berkeley connections but should be interviewed

russ turner: 62 years old white guy who is also a total azzhole, he's as unlikeable as fox

mike magpayo: 43 years old who can recruit high gpa uc level student athletes that got a track record of developing talent to higher levels...should be interviewed

but the reality is that joe pasternack is unequivocally the best person to become the next head basketball coach at the university of california, berkeley for all the reasons stated by 4th gen bears...when we spoke on the phone back in the day (he got my # from his brother in law roxy bernstein) joe discussed his plans for assembling an aggressive recruiting staff including former golden bears, the specifics of successfully fundraising for the basketball facility (which is different than the con artist's $125,000,000+ quidditch facility which is never gonna get built) & his ability to develop basketball talent which includes shooting mechanics

pasternack is 45 years old and absolutely loved by his players, we would be a player's program

reality is that with the current talent level in berkeley & no returning true point guard with haas b-school grad joel brown now in the portal, we could hire steve kerr as our next head coach & still lose 20+ games each of the next 2 seasons...the potential addition of ajay mitchell (who would bring a justin cobbs level of pg play to berkeley with uc santa barbara level academics) could give us the opportunity to be in the big dance in 2 years from now

cal is a dream job for joe in returning to his wife's home/his early career position as a bears assistant coach, there is no other candidate other than shantay who would not leave for millions if we are once again a nationally ranked feared powerhouse with a sold out haas with fans stormin' the floor after epic victories

philbert, this really isn't that complicated

Turner, Smith, DeCuire, Sendek, Miles, Krystkowiak...

This might have been a decent list for last time, or two times ago. Maybe three times ago. Yesterday's candidates. Why not throw Randy Bennett on there, for good measure?

No worries. Wilner suggested Bennett in his column. He also listed Gates and Mark Madsen for good measure.

Let's go all in and get coach K out of retirement. This would be his biggest challenge ever.

no problem, I realize that it's Letourneau's list, not yours.

Gates would've been a risk before Cleveland St, great last year and now is beyond our price range. Screwed that one up. Madsen is intriguing, but I'm assuming he'll replace Haase on the Farm.
