max homa & michael kim are gonna be paired together tomorrow morning as a twosome at the pga stop at quail hollow, both are 8 under par & tied for 9th place

colin morikawa (the haas biz ad grad reverted back to the claw this week, still can't make a putt), james hahn (haas biz ad grad missed the cut by a stroke) & byeong hun an (very strong 2023 season thus far) all missed the cut

max (same b-day as shocky, the big game on nov 19th under scorpio skies) & michael will both enjoy the comfortable pairing as they surely get caught up re: their cal teammates from the greatest team in the history of college golf that won an unprecedented 11 out of 13 tournaments: brandon hagy (the haas biz ad grad got the 2nd fastest ball speed in golf), joel stalter (the haas biz ad grad frenchman plays on the euro tour) & michael weaver (the haas biz ad grad lipped out a 4 foot putt on the 18th hole at cherry hills that would've won the us amateur, easily the most brutal golf shot in the history of cal golf)...everybody loves des

the challenge of the current basketball roster construction is that all of the combo guards got a scorer's mentality (which is a good thing for a scoring challenged team last season that often struggled to score 50+ points in game) but trey woodbury is unique in that he not only knocked down 40% of his 3 pointers last season but his distributing/facilitating mindset also makes his teammates better

golf digest just released the magazine's biennial ranking of the 2023 top 100 golf courses in the united states

not surprisingly i've played all 100 courses on the new list which keeps my streak alive of playing every list since 1995, to finish the 1993 list shocky would just need to play pete dye's old marsh club in palm beach but to be honest with you i would rather just dine at sexy fish & sleep in the next day kinda like the cuban gentlemen in biscayne bay

congrats to michael kim on a spectacular sunday final round playing in a very comfortable twosome with former teammate max homa (finished tied for 8th with a final round 70) in a pressure filled 69 which got him a 7th place finish, a $675,000 paycheck & invitation to july's british open

the above instructional video is for terrence, good mechanics/fundamentals start at an early age but to be honest with you never realized there's a driving range by the eiffel tower...ur protege got a squared up alignment with a closed stance which will promote a right to left ball flight, a little bit of a chicken wing with the right elbow on the backswing, good flexibility in getting the club past parallel & then a nice release thru the ball with proper weight transfer & a high follow thru

glen campbell (former host of the los angeles open pga tournament):

back in the day shocky graduated from the haas biz school & accepted a corporate opportunity with a fortune 500 company in downtown san francisco which wuz fun in a m82 midnite city kinda way, rode the cable car down to my office on california street & sometimes drank too much (wuz not into yoga/meditation then, that enlightenment came later so there's still hope for s&c coach brian johnson) on wild azz friday nights often in the bermuda triangle in the city by the bay

but then took a lucrative transfer to phoenix, did not know a single person...loved the desert lifestyle in the winter but the summers wuz brutal...so in my mid 20s i somehow rounded up the scrappy funds to join forest highlands golf club in flagstaff which is the augusta national of arizona which got average day temps of the 70s/80s in the summer

so show up the 1st day the club opens for the new season on may 1st & the head pro mark johnson (now the general manager of the martis camp club in truckee) tells me he's gonna put me in the saturday morning men's choose up with some wily much older guys who wanna meet the new kid...fantastic, let's do this

so the other 3 guys are jerry colangelo (at that time the owner of the phoenix suns), the ceo of the arizona republic chip weil & glen campbell...they welcomed me in the best way possible intentionally walking in my putting line, making fun of my nickname & offering to hook me up with a suns dancer

anyways after the round campbell graciously invited me to his house at the end of the 16th fairway on the right side with dramatic canyon views of the 18th hole & we later played a couple of rounds at his valley club phoenix country club (he lived at the biltmore)

glen did a lot of crazy **** which is why he moved to arizona where he could focus more on golf/music & not all night parties in the hollywood hills, he didn't really write any of his songs but the lyrics to rhinestone cowboy are pretty autobiographical & help me remember a now passed on golf buddy who lived life to its fullest (but not without regrets too)

so the other 3 guys are jerry colangelo (at that time the owner of the phoenix suns), the ceo of the arizona republic chip weil & glen campbell...they welcomed me in the best way possible intentionally walking in my putting line & offering to hook me up with a suns dancer

anyways after the round campbell graciously invited me to his house at the end of the 16th fairway on the right side with dramatic canyon views of the 18th hole & we later played a couple of rounds at his valley club phoenix country club (he lived at the biltmore)

glen did a lot of crazy **** which is why he moved to arizona where he could focus more on golf/music & not all night parties in the hollywood hills, he didn't really write any of his songs but the lyrics to rhinestone cowboy are pretty autobiographical & help me remember a now passed on golf buddy who lived life to its fullest (but not without regrets too)

what is the most important strategy that is 100% controllable that will maximize crowd attendance during the 2023 season with insane gameday noise energy turning haas into a hostile home court venue & also ensure a future pipeline of a fanatical season tix/donor fanbase?

answer: letting all the berkeley students in for FREE on gamedays, this is what san diego state did in investing in the program's future...with berkeley's current mission statement these days including the matriculation of 1st time family members going to college and graduating thereby breaking longtime cyclical patterns of non degreed families it's important to recognize that there's a lotta students on campus that cannot afford basketball or football season tixs

there's an almost zero probability that any student that does not participate in the magic of cal athletics on gamedays will ever become a season tix buyer/donor once they graduate from berkeley even if they build generational wealth

the con artist has fought this measure in the past & markeisha everett has failed to make any innovative decisions that will increase the fanbase during her time in berkeley, will they finally decide to invest in the future?

the monster made a post a month ago wondering why there aren't any interviews with james arthur knowlton, that post has since disappeared but no worries here are my questions & the responses from beth tafolla-voetsch the senior associate athletics director & chief development officer reprinted in their entirety (beth's answers are in italics)

question: I've been told my multiple major donors that Knowlton has been allegedly been told by Jennifer Simon-O'Neil that "for every dollar spent on men's basketball that a dollar needs to be spent on women's basketball," I'd like to get to the bottom of that misinterpretation of Title IX which is not shared by any other University in the nation.

answer: We need to invest in our men's basketball program and our commitment to gender equity won't impact our commitment to a successful men's basketball program. It should be noted, the law does not require us to spend the same amount of money but does require the experience of student-athletes to be equitable. We believe in gender equity and are committed to equitable experience for our student-athletes.

question: I'd also like to know if Jennifer Simon-O'Neil has signed off any academic silver bullet admissions for any incoming women's athletes during the last 5 years and if so how the compliance team is monitoring her potential engagements with those families to ensure there are no Varsity Blues repercussions.

answer: We would ask you to please reference the Cal Athletics Department Policy Manual that we shared with you last fall.

question: Would also like Markeisha Everett's marketing plans for Cal football and basketball, how come both programs are not making inroads in selling tickets with those without a Berkeley affiliation (particularly families) that are priced out of buying Golden State Warriors tixs and with the departure of the Oakland Raiders?

answer: Our pricing model for football and basketball is reflective of the market we are in and we have affordable tickets and payment plans for fans.

question: How are these 2 market share spaces being systematically pursued for season tix/gameday tixs selling opportunities?

answer: We continue to do market research and implement strategic plans to make us competitive in the market.

question: Why does she (Markeisha Everett) still got a 11 person communications team, can the coaches of these non revenue sports not write their own gameday reports which would allow this department to be rightsized to a couple of employees like her peer institutions that don't have Big 10 financed affluence?

answer: Our athletic communications staff has a myriad of duties in addition to writing game recaps and their work helps ensure our coaches can focus on our student-athletes.

question: Has Tom Lowry borrowed any funds either externally or internally from the University during the last year and if so what are the repayment terms for that debt?

answer: Yes, the department has. Please contact the Campus CFO to inquire about the repayment terms for the bridge loan we took from the campus in FY22.

further update: I've asked Beth for a one or two sentence response summarizing the total dollars that have been borrowed from the Central Campus.

question: Was Coach Charmin Smith's contract extended another year like other coaches due to COVID and when does her current contract expire?

answer: Yes all coaches including Coach Smith's contract was extended due to the pandemic.

question: What steps is the Athletic Department taking to reduce costs given the uncertainty of future revenue flow?

answer: We continue to monitor the changing landscape of college athletics and will continue to review and adapt when necessary. We are always looking for ways to increase revenue and hold down costs. Over the past three years, we have instituted hiring slowdowns, temporary pay reductions for coaches/staff, and reductions to sport and administrative operating budgets in order to balance revenue with expenses.

question: Will Knowlton consent to an interview with me?

answer:

as this transparent conversation indicates beth is an exemplary senior employee doing her best in a challenging work environment with both of the department's top 2 ranked bureaucrats currently under investigation by the chancellor's office which will hopefully result in their terminations & potentially even criminal charges

when the con artist & o'neil are walked to their cars, andrew mcgraw will be hired as the next athletic director to bring focus to the revenue sports of football & basketball while downsizing the currently financially unsustainable 30+ sports with beth tafolla-voetsch promoted to the #2 position within the department
