100% correct on the sideline centric play calling, Usually it's the other way around, a DC will try to take away the passes between the hashmarks and force a QB to make throws he might not be able to complete. The sideline is an extra defender. Predictability and tendencies are easy to defend and explains why Cal comes up short in close games where the habits become magnified.

^^^^calalumnus island dude, 100% that a gameday package should be strategized for the jet & his unique speed ala oregon's utilization of de'anthony thomas back in the day to get him touches in open space

love this foto of javian with his imaginary bulked up muscles & ****...in real life tho the jet is built kinda like yoga boy shocky at 5'9" (maybe) & 165 lbs...for my b-day maybe ima gonna hire davidson for a specially commissioned painting of a strongman shocky picking up a bus full of rescue doggys or something

blake, zony & big c, do u remember back in the day with sonny's offensive fireworks that whenver the bears needed a 1st down stephen anderson would run a skinny 6-10 yard route & then post up to the inside of the field for an almost always automatic simple pitch & catch...check out this route at the 35 second mark...also check out the inside slant to maurice harris at the 1 minute 44 second mark for a touchdown

there's no reason cal's wideouts with length like jeremiah hunter, brian hightower, marquise montomgery or mason starling when healthy couldn't run these routes for 1st downs & keep drives alive instead of the current 30 yard low percentage sideline routes that are expertly defended by the coached up defenders that know our predictable offensive passing schemes

coach wilcox is a fan of the perimeter passing routes probably because misthrown balls are usually thrown out of bounds whereas passes in the middle third of the field every now & then result in interceptions

look, there's a reason that one of the most respected defensive coordinator masterminds in the history of the nfl marv lewis tole me that "cal is the easiest team in the pac 12 to gameplan against"

is the middle third of the field bear territory or not?#

jaydn ott is gonna be healthy/ready to rip off 65+ yard scampers against them idaho vandals, a kicking competition this week in berkeley & my cage fighting coach/mentor taj moving up the depth chart among the wideouts with his explosive playmaking skillz

would've been insightful if this week's depth chart included a scatter chart of targeted areas of attack for the cal offense, is the middle third of the field the bermuda triangle or wut?...ruh roh scooby

I loved Stephen Anderson -- so underrated at Cal. He actually played for a while in the NFL which is not surprising given his size and hands, but may have been surprising for some as he was about our #5 receiving option at Cal.

Totally agree about the middle of the field. We have to make defenses defend it and if they don't, then Sam should gash them for 20 yard delayed srambles up the middle.

So we would still be short of the $37 million we were getting from the Pac. Plus increased travel expenses. But sure beats the death sentence. Need donors to step up.

So, if the coaches read this thread can one of them stop being a pu*** and stand up to Wilcox for a change. Under that coward we have never thrown over the middle and have always played offensively as a scared and timid group. The results have consistently been terrible.
Wilcox needs to change now or step down!!!!!!!!!!

anyways, ur rite tllden don't got no par 3 course but lake chabot got one...it appears from the foto above of the 1st hole that the shotmaking strategies are twofold: 1) from the gold tees don't hit behind the ball & break ur wrist on the cart path and 2) play a homakawa fade long & left off the green monster & let the hillside funnel the ball back onto the green

is that correct?

last friday me & slim wadie (creighton grad, never played lake chabot) got jammed up time wise with our late afternoon tee time at lake merced but if we could've logistically played earlier our plan wuz to get over to lake chabot by the oakland zoo before sunset, pay the cart kid 20 bucks to drive us up the mountain & drop us off on the tee box of the all world par 6 675 yards 18th hole & then celebrate the best rollercoaster hole on planet earth walking the hole with only a driver, 3 wood, pitching wedge & a putter in our hands

Those yellow tees are for frisbee golf players (you can see the first target bucket in the far background behind the green). That par 3 course is a bit beat up, but super fun to play. There's a lot of OB and ball loss opportunities, but it's part of the challenge.

Chabot's 18th hole par 6 is one of the most fun holes I've ever played. A few years ago a guy got a Condor (a score of 2!):

https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/sanfrancisco/news/oakland-golf-course-still-buzzing-about-extremely-rare-condor-score/

The big Chabot course is enjoyable, but most shots require clubbing up or down 2 clubs since everything is either an extreme uphill or downhill.

For fun par 3 courses, try Golden Gate in SF. If it's still there. For 9 holers with a few par 4s, and if you don't mind a drive (car) try Northwood in Russian River. One of the most scenic, wooded courses anywhere designed by Alistar Mackenzie. Gleneagles in SF is tough and nice too. Bring some extra balls. ;-)

How the hell is this even a story? We have gone for it on fourth down 9 times this year. 2 of those were end of half 4th downs that resulted in interceptions, and most of them were around mid field or in the grey zone (too close to punt, to far to kick a field goal)....but still. How can we go for it on fourth down more often than once per quarter but be afraid to use an entire third of the football field because it might result in a turnover?

We kept going for it on fourth down because we trusted our defense to hold (they more than held up their side of the bargain), and we trusted our backs to get a few yards if needed.

For the record, outside those two end of half pics, we are 6 of 7 on fourth down for the year. Good things come when you trust in your offense to make a play. Open up the whole damned field (if it isn't already).

so the bears didn't attack the middle of the field during the 6'2" chase garbers & 6'5" jack plummer seasons, now we got a 5'10" (maybe) quarterback who is challenged to see over defensive linemen and opponents review passing scatter charts for tendencies & flat out know that our head coach is not gonna risk an interception over the middle of the field...this conservatism is also why the bears lead the nation in the most punt return fair catches, our staff's goal is not fumble the ball instead of strategizing for an electric return that scores points/hypes up the team/fans ala desean

and thus the bears throw only sideline routes & the almost always failed tight end blocking screens on the perimeter, nobody is fooled by our predictable tendencies...justin via spav is afraid of quick slants over the middle or passes to the tight ends in space (safer to have them as an extra blocker) while attacking the relatively wide open middle third of the field

Shocky, one of my biggest frustrations on Saturday was that so many of our passes were sideline routes. By the second half I was calling for more quick slants into the middle of the field, but we attempted very few. Do you think that Sam's short stature severely inhibits using the middle of the field? If so, that's a big deal, in my opinion. Hopefully Spav can scheme to open up passing lanes and lines of sight for Sam, cuz otherwise we're too predictable.

I also would have liked to see Sam take off and run more often than he did Saturday. If opponents overplay the sidelines in recognition of Cal's tendencies, wouldn't that open up the middle for Sam to gobble up yardage on delayed scrambles up the middle? I would look for that to happen more in the coming games....let's get opposing defenses nervous about the different weapons we have and the different ways we can attack. Did not really see that on Saturday.
Sam's short stature absolutely reduces the play book. Hell I was at fall camp and witnessed Sam jump in the air to throw passes in the middle of the field. ***?? We are limited w/o doubt.

Sadly, unless things change in short order we are going to be one of the easiest team's to scout.
I would imagine that our "predictability" in play-calling makes us an easy "mark" for any DC in the conference.
