3 kinda dumb azz bogeys turned a potentially great round into an ok round as michael kim shot a 70 & is tied for 26th...michael is fighting to retain the highly valued pga tour card for the 2025 season, right now he's hovering around the #100 spot...the top 125 players keep their pga tour cards, collin, ben & max are locks on this deal
elsewhere kk limbhaust hit only 17 of 28 fairways & missed the cut on the korn ferry tour and brandon hagy hit only 12 of 28 fairways & missed the cut on the pga americas (canadian) tour

michael & james hahn will be competing in next week's pga tournament in iowa at the tpc deere run...collin morikawa, max homa & ben an will be taking another week off before playing in the scottish open at the renaissance club (terrific doak links design south of edinburgh) before the british open at royal troon (scotland's west coast) next month

Thoughts from Detroit: -First round went great which was fun. Funny enough, the first few holes felt terrible and was really scrappy but got some putts to drop, made a decent front nine and then caught fire which turned into a really good round. -I got it to 11 under at one point…

fun fact: in all my years of attending cal football & basketball games, i have literally NEVER heard a single fan reference cal's standing in the director's cup or the yoga practices/ritualistic mating patterns of t-rexs...nobody gives a **** about that kinda stuff except benji, beauty & maybe misty mae, where r the lucky leashes (shocky got major problems)?

Furthermore my first conversation will be with Coach Bloesch to demand that he dial up PITCHOUTS this fall to All American Jaydn Ott on the edges in open space so he run like the ******* wind towards the endzone on fall gamedays against ACC opponents for ESPN plays of the day touchdowns which will trigger the pony tailed curvy brunette yoga cheerleaders (like Doms) and the Cal Marching Band (which will NO longer be silenced by the worthless bureaucrats in the AD) to lead the frenzied screaming sold out crowds (inclusive of students with FREE tickets) to epic noise levels that will cause the Strawberry Canyon homeowners to move to Yuma while the seagulls circle from high above further afar while old men like Bobo play checkers in the park and the future leaders of Planet Earth read Faulkner.

6 days until decision day for the most important recruit other than jaydn ott of the coach wilcox era
right now them bears got 13 commitments (in building a strong 2025 class), shocky is projecting 15-16 high school commitments before the fall season with the possibility of multiple current conditional offers becoming actionable offers after the staff has had a chance to watch early senior gameday play...offering low gpa guys just to add #s would be a dumb decision that would lead to a **** situation (guys struggling & entering the transfer portal) & this recruiting cycle has seen a # of these academically marginal football recruits select less intellectually challenging schools

freshmen softball pitching phenom randi roelling transferring to georgia & men's golfer ethan fang transferring to oklahoma state, both are walking away from berkeley degrees
freshman standout eric lee is gonna join ethan fang at oklahoma state, this pretty much takes the sails out of the bears competing for a national championship in the 2024/2025 season
when shocky walked 36 holes at the osu's karsten creek course (one of tom fazio's best design efforts & the 2nd best university course in the usa after the fabulous yale course in new haven) during a weekday there wuz nobody else at the course except both the men's & women's cowboys...the head pro gave me a tour of the magnificent clubhouse overlooking the lake on the boomerang par 5 18th hole & told me the cowboys play, practice, work out, study (which is basically an hour a day at an unaccredited aau university), eat all meals & socially hang out there too literally every day of the week
fun fact: the head pro asked me if i wuz related to cowboy hall of famer rickie fowler, tole him that allison stokke married rickie in a pathetic attempt to make me jealous...shocky did not elaborate any further
it's basically a semi pro golfer development program in stillwater without an academic component
coach desimone (everybody luvs des) back in the day targeted prospective haas biz ad majors like collin to ensure 4/5 year commitments, guys without academic ambition will not be willing to sacrifice range time for stupid **** like studying & reading books...coach chun (who is a smart haas biz ad grad & adaptive) & coach ireland also need to recruit a more ethnically diverse roster, whose gonna be the next max homa?
qb1 of the future?? (the KEY to the 2025 recruiting class)#
Sources: Utah State has informed the football team that coach Blake Anderson is on administrative leave and unlikely to return. Defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling has been named interim coach.

like the majority of the players entering the transfer portal, there's been little (or disappointing relative to expectations) interest by other schools for this young man
really hoping that this 4.1 gpa outstanding student that would love to attend medical school will retire from football (he's got no upside) & stay in berkeley pursuing his academic goals with a needs based financial scholly...entering the transfer portal immediately nulls a player's football scholly but it doesn't mean a dismissal academically from the university
tiu, let's not make a dumb decision, ok?
shocky is rooting for u cuz u got good hair (and a good gpa)
Walter Chun was just fired. I'm guessing losing his top recruits didn't help. Seemed like a nice guy. If there's nothing nefarious in the background, I understand that we have high expectations for this program and they haven't been competitive on the main stage since Des left. Hoping we can get a great coach.
75 & hollywood, there's a lot of highly sensitive & emotional reactions right now, not gonna comment until the landscape is more clear to me
bottom line, there's no reason (other than a worthless athletic director who cannot be trusted to evaluate coaching talent, who extended the worst basketball coach in the nation in fox while the insider(s) here encouraged the dwindling fanbase to take a "nuanced" view) that the cal golf program should not compete for ncca national championships with future pga calibre talent
my moms grew up poor as **** in san francisco always studying & working at a dry cleaner, her limited fun times wuz going to ocean beach for FREE & walking the family doggy dog
she got a scholly to berkeley & became the 1st person in her family to graduate from college much less the #1 ranked public university in the world, that degree wuz transformational in her life and she instilled that hard work & protecting the most vulnerable in society values in me
yeah every father's day is also a celebration of our moms too, right tavian?
wut up tavian, how's ur family vacation going?
when u make ur collegiate decision on july 6th r u gonna prioritize the selection of a program that got a track record of developing corona centennial grads for the nfl with world class academics for building generational wealth after football that is also only a hour+ ride on southwest to the bay area for fall gamedays for moms?
yeah coach toler got big plans for a 6'2" 180 lbs wideout with strong hands/tight routes & 4.52 SPEED

hollywood, it should be pointed out that the cal men's golf team wuz in the ncca finals at lacosta last month but the transfers of the 2 non academic kids to oklahoma state wuz walter's undoing along with not recruiting an ethnically diverse roster (not 100% asian)
there's a lotta backstory to all of this that's pretty ugly (pga donor drama falsehoods) that ima not gonna get into here but this deal has been poorly handled by knowlton by not getting all the stakeholders including des on the same page...anybody who thinks this means a new level of accountability for cal coaches moving forward just isn't wired into reality to be honest with you

patrick hits the ball almost as far as brandon hagy with unreal clubhead speed & tole me that the team's #1 ranked player wenliangxie is gonna grad transfer to cal's biz certificate program to compete for the bears during his final year of eligibility...patrick tole me that xie gotta complete game with professional golf upside & that he's a soft spoken very likable teammate
the university of california, berkeley=#1 ranked public university in the world (including china & the jersey shore)
the next men's golf coach needs to quickly get buy in from tony cheng, nathan wang & wenliang xie to form a nucleus trio of experienced players to build the program around for the 2024/2025 season
if michael wilson is hired as the head coach, he should reach out to us amateur finalist/haas biz ad grad michael weaver (and teammate of max homa, michael kim & brandon hagy) to see if he might be interested in an assistant coaching position while still retaining remotely his financial services biz in fresno but realize he would probably bring along the rams current assistant coach luke vivolo (uc davis standout, former mini tour player)

Saying an action was mishandled by JK is like saying the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. As you've pointed out repeatedly his incompetence knows virtually no bounds. Let's hope the McKeever investigation provides enough cover to fire him and his cronies for cause.I would think that stakeholders like Des and Collin and Max should be consulted since they've each donated a lot of money to permanently endow scholarships. I appreciate that Cal made rhe NCAA finals this year, But as you've said about golf and other sports, Cal is a unique animal that really requires well-rounded student athletes, or the student athlete won't survive. Problem who appreciate the 40 year decision. The reason people are surprised by the firing is that so many other coaches with far less successful records have survived - Nancy McDaniel being the primary example in my book. Maybe Wilson is a good prospect for next coach. Whoever it is, they need to understand and embrace what Cal is. Fox had no freaking idea what he had whereas Madsen does - although at some point he needs to recruit enough high school players so it doesn't seem like such a revolving door. The landscape of paid athletes is turning everything on its head. That Stanford softball pitcher bailed for another team for big NIL dollars. I always felt that Stanford, and to a lesser degree Cal, had a huge recruiting advantage in non-revenue sports including women's basketball because they were able to sell a meaningful degree and business contacts to almost all female and a lot of male recruits who played sports with no real financial future. Now with NIL, that advantage has been greatly diminished.

Not sure of many details of Walter's dismissal, though I have received emails regarding what is purportedly behind the decision. The decision had to be performance based. Walter was well liked and is a boy scout in his private life - no one should even go there.

The strength of the golf program has been sufficient funding to offer scholarships on the school-five-to-play-four years model, which is what allows golfers to seek a Haas degree if they so desire. That makes golf one of the sports where Cal's academic reputation actually enhances recruiting.
That said, golf is one of the hardest sports in which to balance school and sport, because it's the only sport that plays in both the fall and spring semester, and tournaments almost always include at least one weekday, which may result in missed classes. Golfers have to therefore be very good at time management, particularly since there are Haas professors that don't give them any leeway. Des struggled with this as the coach.
Golf is also one of the sports, IMHO, where freshmen usually are not major contributors. This all means, in the easy-transfer era, that there has to be even more diligence than in the past as to the academic background of recruits, and the likelihood that they won't transfer after a year as the two players did this year.
I found Peter Ireland's resume underwhelming, so I doubt he'll be the permanent choice. Most of the golf alumni who aren't playing have jobs where Cal golf coach would probably be a pay cut. I'll have to look up Mike Wilson, but from what Shocky said, it seems like he'd be a good choice.
