Thanks. Do you know if there are any candidates in mind for his replacement?
Not beyond what is posted here. Chris Zambri is a former D1 coach of the year with some NCAA championship rings. He is coaching the US national development team, whatever that is. Not sure he wants back into collegiate coaching. But hiring Zambri definitely would make a statement.
Wilson's resume is quite respectable, and he seems like an obvious fit for Cal.
shocky just had a 2 hour phone call with fellow haas biz ad grad & legendary cal coach steve desimone re: a wide variety of topics (some of which must remain confidential):
*****steve is in agreement that michael wilson (academic all american who led the bears national championship team) would be an excellent choice as the next cal head coach
*****michael weaver (haas biz ad grad) just got married & would not be in a position to return to berkeley as a coach
*****cal men's golf got a current financial endowment of $37,000,000+ which is the BEST of any berkeley athletic program...thx you to alex & marie shipman for endowing the head coaching position
*****fellow haas biz ad grad rich lyons will be initiating an audit of the cal athletic department, we are both in consensus that significant change within the department is 100% inevitable
*****walter chun confirmed to steve earlier this year the program has the ncca max 4.5 schollys (with title ix the women's team has 6.0 schollys)...it's possible that future roster sizes will be less than last year's 14 player roster
*****the best administrator steve's worked with thru the years that he respects the most is jay john (coach montgomery & lute olson's brainstrust)
*****steve thinks tony chen, nathan wang & daniel heo all got upside...his dark horse breakout candidate is 6'5" charlie berridge who is playing lights out this summer in new york state amateur tournaments & whose playing style reminds des of scottie scheffler
*****des is gonna follow up my recommendation & reach out to seton hall transfer wenliang xie
*****steve spoke with collin morikawa for an hour yesterday & says collin loves where his game is right now...steve is predicting a morikawa victory in the next month at the scottish open, british open or the 2024 summer olympics in paris
*****des is in agreement that collin should involve his caddie jj (a d2 ncca champ at chico state back in the day) in greens reading...whereas shocky thinks morikawa's putting misses are often putts shoved to the right with an open putterhead, steve thinks his misses are due to a lack of speed on the low side of the hole
*****des thinks max homa got the game & time to win a major championship
*****steve's health (prevented him from attending any golf matches this past season) is good & we made plans to meet up at the bears mckenzie cup at the meadow club which is not further afar from muir woods & stinson beach high school
The perks of coming back to where you won: -Thereโs a feeling of a special bond with the course and everyone involved. Kind of like going back to ur Alma mater. Brings back all the great memories you had - my own parking spot -a champions locker area -all the volunteers rememberโฆ pic.twitter.com/eYxxv02Mbv
as a result of hitting his 2nd shot into the woods on his final (9th) hole for a double bogey & 2 chunked chip shots on the par 4 6th & 13th holes that stayed in the rough that resulted in bogeys, michael kim rolled in a 30 foot off the green uphill eagle putt on the par 5 17th hole en route to an opening 71 in a shootout that will likely require 25+ under par for a repeat victory
Yes, working 16 hours on the 4th of July sucks, but getting a random day off in February when everyone else is #grinding makes up for it.
sansei, yeah des came to cal as a basketball player kinda like u but much more importantly if this is a current foto of u will you plz make a point of attending a couple of shocky's FREE football pregame buffets (will be special ordering in miso soup from nobu) at buc-ee's this fall & give me some t-rex yoga development mentoring or something??
https://instagr.am/p/29WGktxYo1 plz also let me know if u like doggy dogs, ok?...if u got a criminal record (wanted in 2 states can't move wrong?) or got bad judgment that would be good to know too in advance
ponytails (kinda like PITCHOUTS to jaydn ott in open space) r triggering#
2024 scholly update: the final 3 scholly departures for the fall season will be publicly announced in the near future resulting from medical retirements/academic casualty (held out of 2024 spring ball)
2024 new schollys: right now there are 43 NEW scholly additions
75 & hollywood, there's a lot of highly sensitive & emotional reactions right now, not gonna comment until the landscape is more clear to me
bottom line, there's no reason (other than a worthless athletic director who cannot be trusted to evaluate coaching talent, who extended the worst basketball coach in the nation in fox while the insider(s) here encouraged the dwindling fanbase to take a "nuanced" view) that the cal golf program should not compete for ncca national championships with future pga calibre talent
Thanks for this. All I can say is that if Walter got canned for performance, then everybody else from baseball to women's lacrosse had better raise their game or update their resumes.
Not sure of many details of Walter's dismissal, though I have received emails regarding what is purportedly behind the decision. The decision had to be performance based. Walter was well liked and is a boy scout in his private life - no one should even go there.
Tough to see how it could be performance based relative to most coaches on campus.
Also, Lyons JUST became chancellor. We are all hoping Knowlton is a lame duck. How does he make a move of this magnitude without Lyons' approval? The alternative is Lyons approved it. There has to be more to the story. Any way this can help get Knowlton fired?
https://instagr.am/p/C5_mX0EPN6v reality check: with 23,000+ employees chancellor rich lyons wuz not involved with the cal men's golf head coach decision, that would be micromanagement of the worst kind on his 1st day out
the truth is that lyons got the dan mogoluf iniated 2nd outside legal counsel report on the mckeever suicidal women's swimmers beyond breaking bad treatment with respects to the athletic department culpability
at this point lyons got the information to either terminate the financially irresponsible con artist & his evil as **** 2nd in charge jennifer simon-o'neil for cause or do absolutely nothing and allow knowlton (and his handpicked cfo tom lowry from the air force academy) to continue to "borrow" (there will never be future revenues to pay back this growing debt) an unprecedented record setting amount of money from the central campus at a time of significantly reduced funding from the state of california which will cause him to lose valuable political capital with faculty & those that don't share his enthusiasm for collegiate sports
wut's at risk if lyons drags this out with the corporate 101 playbook slowplay strategy of an outside independent audit of the athletic department?
knowlton will continue to amass unsurpassable financial debt without reducing costs/sports programs & potential conference realignment could relegate cal to a mountain west level minor league...that will result in alums/donors gameday treks to memorial stadium & haas pavilion grinding to an abrupt halt, screeechhh!...school spirit on gamedays is the portal to the necessary future critical donations/endowments that will finance the future of berkeley...without this march of the blue & gold penguins, rich's legacy will likely be the chancellor that lost berkeley's ranking as the #1 ranked public university in the world
the world view from shocky's perspective (monsters got yoga/meditation practices, not video game libraries)#
https://instagr.am/p/C6uQI5BR3Wr while the staff believes wideout josiah martin (megan thee stallion wuz his date to the denton guyer hs sr prom at buc-ee's before his early enrollment at the university of calveston) got the highest nfl upside of anybody in the bears 2024 high school class, a 2025 class passing connection from jaron keawe sagapolutele to tavian mcnair would be redunkulous!!

As we all know, firing a coach and hiring a new one costs more money than retaining one. However it is often necessary in the revenue sports to get to winning to generate more money. How does this generate more money for Cal? Moreover, how does golf fit into Lyon's overall plan for Cal athletics? I would want to sort that out before making any changes that will only add to the deficit.
IMO making a move like this on Lyons' first day without consulting with him is a d*ck move.
^ did u read the part above that pointed out the men's golf team got the largest endowmentof any sports program (including football & basketball) at $37,000,000+ and utilizes only 4.5 schollys?
not so fun facts: the rugby endowment is a fraction of the men's golf endowment & baseball has burned thru the original $18,000,000 that wuz raised by stu gordon to "save" the program
If Knowtpn isn't gone before this season kicks off, Lyons is gonna get an earful at every road game. Don't take this stuff lightly. I've got daughters. What Knowlton covered up is unacceptable.
michael kim-shot a 68 (including a missed 22 inch putt on the 13th hole) & missed the cut by one stroke
**** me (golf is sometimes a really really hard sport, just ask cade)#
Thoughts from the Deere: -Itโs tough missing the cut at a tournament that means a lot to you. I hit it really nice and got some unlucky breaks and couldnโt buy a putt. The only bogey I made on Friday was from a 2ft par putt that hit a pebble of some sort and bounced out butโฆ

100%, knowlton is a candy azz soft enabler/worthless bureaucrat & jennifer simon-o'neil is simply just evil as ****

So was it a donor who pushed for the firing? I just think this is not something you do on your new boss' first official day on the job.

100% My daughters swim and check many of the boxes of those McKeever singled out for racist abuse and scapegoating. That McKeever dismissed reports brought to him by swimmers and their parents as "tough coach, one day you'll be thankful" with no investigation is vile, in addition to being against UC, California and Federal rules and laws. That he went ahead and gave McKeever a new $5 million contract after those complaints were made without investigating them first is gross fiscal malfeasance.

With huge deficits coming: can you cut sh---t to the bone?
When you hemorrhaging money and if the new guy in charge orders an audit or consulting report, the new guy is moving way beyond looking at one or even a couple positions. That is corporate 101.
big c, the # of football staff is gonna explode nationwide among the football factories, expect cal's # to go north too...no change in the # of staff that can recruit/visit prospects on the road but staff members can now participate in hands on player training/development
Division I removes some restrictions on countable coaches in football.https://t.co/0KHTDjUQWa
calalum, everybody should read the specific allegations which included team members being forced to share their biggest secrets at team "bonding" getaways & then mckeever using those personal stories repeatedly against the swimmers during the season until for some they mentally broke & had suicidal thoughts
this coaching practice along with racist attitudes/behavior against black female swimmers is documented in both of the dan mogulof initiated outside legal counsel reports & is 100% unacceptable
the parents of swimmers for multiple years brought these concerns to knowlton & simon-o'neil, if the new chancellor doesn't take ACTION against these 2 bad characters this will be a serious blow to the INTEGRITY of berkeley & will damage future fundraising
and yeah shocky is gonna start asking for transparent answers/updates at public cal football events...
protecting the most vulnerable is a core berkeley value#
Caldwell is good to go? Somehow I thought I read that he had medically retired.
after an arduous year plus rehab byron (who is mentally limitless with academic ambition) participated in the 2024 spring game with a major brace, he's still not 100% relative to his elite high school +1 athleticism
Bio dates โฆ that is +1 detective work ! Hope Starling is at least getting his degree.
thx (my legal middle name is sherlock) but the real detective today into the perplexing case of the hounds of the berkeleyville football roster is bear cam
221 baker street (is the street address for the university of calveston's new spring ball practice facility adjacent to the buc-ee's off the i-20 in terrell texas)...in that the fb roster is gonna be almost predominantly texans at some point in the near future it makes no sense to do spring ball at memorial stadium or retain oski (buc-ee is the man!!) as the school mascot
