WARNING: coach bloesch's killer whales 2.7 yards per rush against a fcs defense play calling does NOT include PITCHOUTS to the edges in wide open spaces & is kinda like intentionally smashing cars into telephone poles with ZERO wide receivers & tight ends (other than corey dyches) violently blocking to protect/create gaps for our running backs (no rushes over 10 yards against davis)

What I love about football is the interconnectedness of all the positions. If we don't have receivers that either can't or are unwilling to block, do pitch outs work? Still would like to see more of it since running up the guy only nets 2.7 yards with a Heisman quality RB.

Pitchouts don't work if your OL is too slow to get to the outside edge to block or your WR isn't an aggressive blockers. I am pretty confident Auburn's defense is very fast, so I am not sure how often a pitch out won't lead to the Auburn defenders beating Ott to the spot and it's a 3-yard lost. At least when you run inside you are running forward rather than horizontally shrug.
I don't see much creativity but a limiting factor is if you don't have a QB who is an excellent runner. It's much easier to run cool run plays when you have 10 blockers with the QB running rather than handing it to the RB. BC has some great run concepts versus Florida State but their QB is very fast.
No real excuse for the current offensive staff because this is the team they went with and they have to put the players in the best position for success.
So in short I am all for running more stuff on the outside, but it doesn't matter if Auburn just faster and stronger than the Cal blockers.

It sure looks to me that our base offensive scheme is a run/pass option with our OL standing up, walling off the DL. The OL doesn't even know if it will be a run or pass and so they never look to me to be firing off the ball. Your points about bigger OL and weak receiver blocking also lead to a conclusion that the only outside runs we are likely to see is from Ott reading the defensive movement and bouncing option runs outside.

auburn weather update: it's now projected to be a high of 84 with clouds & 5-10 mph light winds along with a 23% chance of light rain on gameday...the bears have gotten an remarkable break in the apparently recent beyond breaking bad humidity, the staff gotta rotate players but the weather will not dictate the winner of this game with a home field advantage

2nd round of the day at birmingham country club (west course) which got great donald ross bones on a wonderful rolling tightly routed old school canvas but is blighted by outta character ruinovation work by both pete dye & robert trent jones sr...this could be a legit top 100 course in the united states if faithfully restored by a sympathetic old school restorer

walking down college street 2 hours before the opening kick off it wuz pretty ******* obvious that passionate cal fans wuz turning out in alabama, the sec fans could've not been more friendly & gracious hosts (the same can also be said for the warm temperate weather)
auburn is all about its females getting married or something before they leave school, the standard uniform for the coeds is a white belle dress paired with high heels or cowgirl boots along with big hair & no tattoos, it's seriously kinda like an outtake from gone with the wind or something...the student fanbase is 99% white
then 15 minutes before kickoff the war eagle is released that flies halfway around the stadium (and right over shocky's 50 yard perch in enemy territory) before landing at midfield while gobbling up a mock mouse (actually a pouch with treats inside)...this is the most fun (and exciting) gameday tradition in college football, way the **** better than the buffalo running the field in boulder!!
watching pregame warm ups cal's monster offensive line is still banged up with right guard sioape vatikani out but the good news is that the mri for center will mcondald did not reveal any torn muscles & he's expected to return...also apex predator edge defender david reese may be standing on the sidelines with his helmet off but is still the emotional leader of the cal defense
