2) hire/fire championship winning coaches that build programs with high gpa student athletes-lyons is ok with the status quo of losing programs & enabling worthless bureaucrats to abuse our berkeley student athletes
3) cut/manage costs & run a balanced budget with disciplined financial austerity without wracking up debt-honestly donating money to the cal athletic department (with the exception of those supporting the kevin kennedy/lance cooper football nil/revenue sharing endeavors) is kinda like throwing SUITCASES of ur money in the pacific ocean!!
jack clark is not only too old but he also worked against coach cuonzo martin & the men's hoops program back in the day which resulted in him getting my private cell # & calling me in an intense conversation which ima not gonna repeat here, he's actually part of the problem not the solution when it comes to berkeley's support of the olympic sports

Look no one seems to be happy with the leadership of J&J, and I'm certainly not privy to reasons behind the Chancellor's decision, but the argument here is not about getting rid of J&J. It is about your obsession with replacing them with McGraw. It is the most absurd comment he is the only one that can help. It is not understanding that I said someone like Jack Clark (like I said he doesn't likely want the job - probably at his age). But there are plenty of others that could manage and fund raise for non-revenue sports. Further, with respect to the overall health of the athletic department, you are completely missing the boat (this may seem harsh, but my comments are sugar coated compared to those on the pay site) understanding the structure that is being imposed.
With all due respects, McGraw doesn't have any track record hiring coaches or fundraising. Coaches are hired by the head football coach, and now in conjunction with Rivera. Furndraising is done by others. I will give you McGraw has experience managing costs, but McGraw has not had to deal with non-revenue sports donors who have a disproportionate influence because they contribute disproportionately to the academic side. They have their names on buildings. They have the access to the Chancellor, Governor and UC President that McGraw certainly does not have or has any experience in dealing with. But the budget allocations for sports that don't keep up funding are made at the Chancellor level, and the former ADs did their dirty work, not Knowlton, his predecessors, or for heaven sake's Jack Clark, who like Desimone, found basically he had to do it alone. Finally, has it not occurred to you that managing a power conference football team is nothing like managing small roster and mostly small time, mostly women's sports teams?
You fail to completely address or understand that the whole concept that taking away the lead administrator from the football team (a) is not going to happen and (b) and that the success of football is critical right now for most non-revenue programs having any future. You discuss the dealing with the changing sports environment and then pick out golf (as what you say does not apply to women's golf) as representative shows an alarming misunderstanding that top college players and coaches require that they play against the most competitive programs and players, and if they can not do that, they are gone. Both OSU and WSU when the Pac collapsed were gutted essentially across all sports, both coaches and top players. And think this is just sports? OSU and WSU have seen big drops in enrollment. It is a slow grind to quasi-club sports for most of their programs and not one donors and fans will follow.
The role of non-revenue sports at Cal is important for many reasons. What you don't understand is that there basically was an open donor and fan revolt with the manner Cal supported and managed football, and to a lesser degree men's basketball. That meant the program was too poor to even get rid of the last two unqualified and miserable ADs, a mediocre football coach and bad basketball coaches without Chancellors finally stepping in. Things are bad enough, but you now want to now steal the head football administrator for a bunch of sports that drain the budget? Compound that with your statement about the basketball GM, especially after what Rivera had done. Rivera has brought many multiples of donation above is pay, not to mention fan interest, and changed the direction of the program . Someone comparable is coming for Cal men's basketball -and your post is something you will running away from for some time. Cal moves at a glacial pace for a lot of institutional reasons. I have suggested to you before my friend, show some patience. You are far less in the know than you appreciate.

max homa (67, tied for 24th): max is continuing his solid play with a clean scorecard bogey free round hitting 14 outta 18 greens in regulation & getting up and down scrambling on the other 4 holes...did not capitalize on the only 2 par 5s with a missed 7 foot birdie putt on the 7th hole & a mediocre pitch on the 10th hole...drained just 60 feet in made putts today, when they start dropping maรฑana key keep an eye on this artful dodger moving up the leaderboard!!

michael kim (68, tied for 27th): michael really only made one horrible swing all day, a pulled 2nd shot (from the middle of the fairway after a SMOKED 352 yard opening drive) miles left into the thick native grasses on the scoreable par 5 1st hole which ultimately necessitated getting up & down from 80 feet for a par...not a great day on the tom doak designed renaissance greens with only 51 feet in rolled in putts, the slower green speeds are definitely a factor that will need to be adjusted to moving forward with the scottish & british opens

And despite all the nice talk, Lyons elevated RR to AD, with no "co" in front. RR will be the one repping Cal at the important conference (or other) AD meetings, be get one signing forms that require AD signatures,, etc. Be interesting to see how this all plays out when a basketball GM is announced, but it is pretty clear whoever that GM may be, he or she will not report to J&J, but to Lyons.
This is certainly good news for football, and I expect basketball (both genders) in terms of the long run. These are the teams that matter for conference realignment, There is a view that other funded sports may get their own independent GMs as well (if they can pay for them). It seems almost like the Chancellor is using J&J as an incentive (e.g., threat) for other sports to become to become financially independent, though I assume that is an oversimplification and there is more going on that we don't see.
