I thought that I ought to talk about Ott

True freshman Ott started this season on fire, especially at home! He showed that he is a fast, shifty running back.

His CMS performances were against UC Davis and UNLV, and 'Zona. Against Davis he netted 104 yards on 17 carries, against UNLV netted 52 yards on only 7 carries (or, if extrapolated to 14 carries, he would have gained over 104 yards), and against 'Zona he ran for an incredible 274 yards on 19 carries.

Away from Berkeley Ott's net yardage was more down-to-earth of a freshman RB. I mean, against ND he netted a measly 33 yards on 13 carries, against Wazzu he netted a trivial 70 yards on 17 carries, and just recently against Colorado he ran for a mere 47 net yards on 16 carries. None of these away game performances are any near on the same pace as his earlier home games.

I think there are two obvious reasons for the above cited discrepancy. These reasons are not directly attributable to Ott himself.

He's good; there's no doubt about that.

But, I feel that his hot out-of-the-shoot success was primarily due to generally overall weak opponents and weak Bear offensive line play, like piss poor blocking.

How good then is Ott?

I guess we're going to find out during this second half of the Bears' schedule.

Because of Cal's limited offensive talent, I believe the defenses of Cal's remaining opponents are going to key in on Ott. Plus I contend that these teams' defenses are not like Cal's early home opponents; they will be considerably better in my estimation.

Thus, if the above rationale has any validity, Ott will continue to accumulate modest net yardages. If he's really special, he will probably at least breach the over-one hundred net rushing yards barrier in a couple or even several games.

It's all about matchups. Some of the worst rush defenses in the pac-12 are still on the schedule. And, I believe Oregon has the worst pass defense. We may have to establish the pass in order to open up the run game against Washington, which is also bad against the pass. Also, it's not just the running, but the particular run plays. There are ways to beat a run defense by running. But that requires a competent OL. I'm not sure we have that.

Running backs can be difference makers. Ott is one of them. When Ott has had good games, the offensive line has been ok. When Ott has had great games, the offensive line has been good. The passing game is also a factor. If the defense has to respect our pass game, they need to drop into coverage. But when they can get to our QB without blitzing and can stack the box, they can overwhelm our offensive line and stop Ott.

Even the best running backs need a competent offensive line. Yesterday, for example, Ott had no shot to do anything.

It's all connected and it all starts with the offensive line.

What are the transfer rules these days, so that Ott can get to a team with bigger better blockers?

Yup.
Pawlawski said they were ranked 131st in run defense coming into our game.
After our game with them, they jumped up to the 100th ranked DEFENSE (overall) in the nation from 115th.
