My wife and I were in the coliseum that day. My memory tells me they actually played for a while with the gorilla on the goal post. Anyone know for sure about my "played on" comment?
I was there to see it. Bob Tuck stole the football and ran down ot the west end of the stadium with it, wearing his gorilla outfit. I'm sure the refs wouldn't allow any non-football player to go on the field (which includes the end zone and its goal post).

Here's an email about Bob Tuck, easily Cal's best, and most creative, yell leader of all time.

I was an assistent yell leader to Bob when he was a Cal head yell leader in 1970. He had to be, absolutely, the best Cal leader of all time. He was incredible. Extremely smart, creative, fearless, and physically strong.



I will soon be writing an short piece (I hope) on Bear Insider suggesting that Bob be awarded something from Cal indicating he was the best Cal yell leader of all time. Bob was fearless (and strong), often leading a Califolrnia spellout from the top of the Memorial southeast flag poll, holding onto it with one arm and one leg (see if you can do that -- you can't, even when you were a young man)

He was also the person who stole the football in Cal's game versus USC in the early 1970's, at the L.A, Coliseum in the fourth quarter, at the 50 yard line, with both Cal and USC players on the field, and in a FULL GORILLA OUTFIT (see arrticle above for a picture of that outfit), ran with the football down to the goal post on the west end of the stadium, climbed up it and stood on crossbar, and did a gorilla hunch up and down, holding the football. recorded. Too bad that probably nobody recorded that event.

Another Tuck yell occurred in a big Game at Cal in 1970, who then had Jim Plunkett at QB, who later that year won the Heisman Trophy, and wide receiver Randyo Vataha, who later played three seasons in the pros.

In that game, Plunkett through a perfect pass to Vatah,a wh,o was ten yards ahead of the closest Cal defender, but Vataha dropped the ball. Bob Tuck tIMMEDIATELY THEN CAME UP WyITH THE PERFECT YELL. It was "Randy Vata ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha (a laugh). My brother, two years younger than me, went to Stanford, and was in the Stanford stands. He later agreed with me that the Cal yell was really loud and perfectly and clearly enunciated.

Only Bob Tuck could come up with that yell and lead it loud it so loudly and with perfect enunciation.

Bob Tuck deserves a special award for his amazing Cal yell leading abilities and should receive it while he is still alive. I doubt any other Cal yet leader can touch him.

The gotrilla outfit in Tuck's article was the one he used in the USC game against Cal I described. A one of kind event. Tuck was all balls and was the only person who phycially pull off his stunts and yeels and was brillinat enough to think them up. He deserves to be acknowledged for genius and his abilities by Cal.

Who do I call, and what is his or her telephne number, to try to achieve my goal of awarding Bob for his assistance to Cal and memorialize him as Cal's best all time yell leader. Thanks.

The video shows the gorilla outfit that must have been worn by him while stealing the football at USC and crouchong up and down at the L.A Coliseum west end crossbar. We should refer to Bob as "All Balls Tuck."

On the topic of prior yell leaders, and I was a Bob Tuck fan (I am a class of 71 alum) who remembers Wayne Tarr? I think I got the name right but not positive. He was from Chico, later had a role with the 49ers I believe. Anyway, he may not have been an official yell leader but he sure could fire up the crowd.. Anyone here able to refresh my recollection?

Head Cal yell leader Bob Tuck was the greatest Cal yell leader of all time. Before he dies he should be formally recognized as such. I was an assistant yell leader to him. I was an assistant yell leader to him and for a year or so led a "white soul" call and response yess that lasted over a minute that was well received.

Returning to Tuck, he was a very strong, all balls, yell leader.

Here is some of the amazing things he did.

1, Before the game started he used to climb up close to the top of the flagpole at the southeast side of the stadium, hold onto the pole with one arm and one leg and lead the crowd in a C A L I F O R N I A SPELLOUT.

2. One year against Stanford at Cal, Stanford had a top notch wide receiver, who later played three years in the pro's who on a pass play to him, was ten years ahead of the closest Cal defender. Jim Plunkett threw him a perfect pass but Vataha dropped it. Bob instantly created a yell and got the Cal student to yell it perfectly and slowly, which went "Randy Va ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.ha ha. You had to be there to see how exquisitely the yell was performed, following Bob's lead.

More later about a much better and longer Tuck story when he was down at USC a year or two later. Created the greatest Tuck story of all time.

BTW, Bob needs to be formerly recognized by Cal as the greatest yell leader of all time.

Will write a separate comment soon to described the stunt Bob Tuck did in the L.A Coliseum, perhaps the greatest stunt ever performed by a Cal student or former Cal student of all time.

Tuck did make a few appearances in the 80s, his signature move was climbing up high on the speaker poles and leading cheers from up there, remarkable spirit.

This being said, Ken Montgomery was the best yell leader Cal has had the last half century.

At a basketball game in Harmon some time in the '70's Tuck walked into the student section dressed in a rather suspiciously large coat. He then opened the coat to reveal what must have been an entire case of beer taped to his clothes, down his arms, down his pants, and then handed the cans out to the crowd. Always aiming to please.

I was the guy who reported the whole Bob Tuck even in the LA. Coliseum years ago. I was an assistant yell leader, reporting to the unbelievable Bob Tuck. He did exactly as Ia reported.

1. His whole escape was done with a full gorilla costume and all.
2. Wearing that, he ran on to the field in the fourth quarter and stole the football.
3. He ran with the football down to the west end of the Coliseum
4. He shimmied up to the crossbar and someone moved over to the crossbar, with the football and hunched a few times up and down like a gorilla would.
5. He fell down with the football but ai don;t know if he kept it. Probabl not.
6. He ran up in to the west side, still wearing his gull gorilla outfit.
7. He was arrested by a policeman.
8. he got wway from the policeman.
9. I don't know what happened after that.

BTW, for years Bob hosted a website on a Cal windier where he showed a picture of his gorilla outfit without the heard. He didn't describe his Coliseum escapade but rather discussed general tie at Cal. Bob was "all balls, and could most things other people couldn't do.

I did not compare Montgomery with Tuck, because Tuck was before my time, just stated that Montgomery was the best in the last 45 years, the time period I've followed Cal Football. In no way does this opinion about Montgomery be interpreted a slight on Tuck.

About KM's performance, I will just say that there were many times where as part of the student section you felt that you were able to change the outcome of the game - this was also the feedback we heard from coaches and players - and Ken was a huge part of that, much more so than any of the other micmen from the 1980s on.

As I remember it, it wasn't so much the "innovations". Rather, he had a great sense of timing and was able galvanize support with what he said and the way he said it. And I suspect he did a lot of things behind the scenes to make it all come together. His fundamentals were excellent.

Also, it didn't exactly dampen the enthusiasm that the football team was good during that period.


Bob Tuck was the bomb as a yell leader. We loved it when he came back as an alum and did cheers! He throws a pretty decent cocktail party at the Lair, too!

Agreed about Bob.

I think the main credit for the USC only song you know jeer goes to Pawlawski, but perhaps Ken polished the raw product, did the arrangements and perfect delivery, with some elements in the student section adding colorful content about the mothers and sisters of SC students...
