Bears Add 8th Commit of '23 Class in Serra DE Frederick Williams
A month after his visit to Berkeley, Serra (Gardena, CA) defensive end Frederick Williams III, the 6-5/250 3 star DE announced his commitment to Cal today.
“The opportunity to play Pac-12 football and earn a degree or two at the #1 public school in the U.S.,” were some of the reasons Williams cited for choosing the Bears.
Earlier Williams noted Cal’s legacy of putting impact players in the NFL as being a big factor in his interest in the program.
“When I think about Cal, of course, I think about all the great players to come out of their program, like Aaron Rogers, Marshawn Lynch, Desean Jackson, Keenan Allen, Tony Gonzalez, Jared Goff, Cameron Jordan. These are the players that stick out to me when I think about Cal,” noted Williams.
As a senior season that was somewhat limited by injury, Williams totaled 43 tackles, 10 TFL, 4.5 sacks, 1 fumble recovery and 1 pass defended for the Cavaliers, who finished 2nd in the tough Mission League.
Williams’ visit to Cal also played a role in his decision to commit to Cal.
“I really enjoyed my visit,” said Williams. “One of my favorite parts were the game day experience. I had the chance to hang out with the coaches pregame on the field. Everyone was fired up, and I loved the atmosphere. It made me want to suit up and play! But one of my favorite moments was getting the chance to meet Marshawn Lynch’s mom (Mama Lynch) at the game. That was pretty cool.”
Williams became the 8th commit of Cal’s 2023 class with early signing day coming up December 21. The Bears beat out Washington, Oregon State, Colorado, Boston College and more for Williams’ services.
