Very, very impressed with all of the offensive lineman we're pulling into what was previously our biggest position of need. Looks like we're all set for 2023!

We don't want Wilcox picking our QBs.

Spavital was only hired a few weeks ago. We don't want his Texas State recruits, we want a Top P5 QB.

Let's see who we have by the Spring, then again by the Fall.

Don't know if you all realize it but we've had some great signings today, Cardwell being one of them.

Garbage recruiting year by Wilcox and Co. I do not count transfer as part of the years recruiting. Yes. It does add quality players to the team to have Byron Cardell and Allen Sergio but, without quality OL to block for Kai, Zack, Jayden , Sturdivent, Anderson, Hunter or whoever the qb is we are gonna suffer … period. Our OL is horrendous.

Relax. More portal opportunities coming
They don't all happen the first day. Bowls to be played and then there's another portal opening after spring. Lots can and will happen. And if you're not counting portal transfers I can't help you.

In the current environment, I think you must change the way we view successful recruiting. You are effectively recruiting an entire team each year, inclusive of your current players.

Having Ott and JMike come back next year is like scoring two 5* recruits (5 star now because they have experience now on top of potential). So we have to credit the coaches if they retain the top talent - something we didn't have to do in years past.

I think one of the most important things with recruiting is to look across the conference at what other teams are doing and ask whether we are moving up, moving down, or staying in the same place with respect to filling talent needs. I don't think that there is controversy about our need for OL recruits and we've yet to see evidence for success there.

I'm as big a Wilcox skeptic as there is out there, I was the loudest on this site arguing against extending him "for COVID" or "for interviewing with Oregon" but we JUST hired a new OC and a new OL coach. This is just the early signing period. We didn't want desperate offers, we want the best OL and QB recruits, whether HS, JC or portal, that we can have in Spring and then Fall camp. If things look bad at that point, I'll join in the freak out but we need to have a tiny bit of patience to let things develop over the next few months.

However, I agree it is not fun to have our recruiting class ranked 12th in PAC-12 at the same time our basketball team is 0-12.

How many more players in total, whether transfers, jucos, or HS signees, can be added by Cal after today?

I thought I read somewhere that the limit for any incoming class is 25 if no one on this year's team transferred out, plus up to 7 more if players on this year's team leave via transfer. If that is in fact the case, that means up to 18 more new players can be signed after today.

Is that correct?

Relevant Question: Would you as a top high school football offensive performer have been excitedly following the Musgrave system and it's predictably poor results? Exactly. Amazing we got anyone at this point. New coaches now can go out and shake the portal etc. for the position folks we need. In other words, in this new world, it's early.

Despite the learned explanations for why these results don't matter, having a HS class ranked 30 spots behind the next Pac-12 program at signing day is discouraging to me.

Agreed, though Wilcox's inability to pull in top recruits on the defensive side for 7 years needs explanation too.
