Is the Rashada situation a one-off misstep, or have the Gators completely flubbed their first swing at NIL?

Have not confirmed yet but hearing a rumor that four-star QB Jaden Rashada will visit Colorado as soon as today.

Prime won't be there long enough to take advantage of the shock wave he appears to be creating. Remember, he insisted that CU lower their acad standards within days of his arrival.Econ141 said:bluehenbear said:Have not confirmed yet but hearing a rumor that four-star QB Jaden Rashada will visit Colorado as soon as today.

One day after flipping the #1 CB recruit. Neon Deion! Would be great to see Colorado become a national power and have 4 teams carry the pac12 football flag (Utah in addition to UW and OR).
The NIL money might not be directly connected to CU. Deion's son, who will be the starting QB at CU this fall, has a NIL deal with Gatorade.dimitrig said:I didn't think Colorado had that kind of $$$bluehenbear said:Have not confirmed yet but hearing a rumor that four-star QB Jaden Rashada will visit Colorado as soon as today.

I really believe that we are on many such lists just to class them up. "Look, I am a real student athlete considering real academic institutions, not just a football machine."heartofthebear said:If I had a dollar for every guy who had us in his final 8 and still went elsewhere...MilleniaBear said:
Careful what you say. This guy and his family are going to burn a lot of bridges and I can easily see him coming back to the Bay Area for a chance to start. We were in his final 8 and he is a raw talent.

If we have 13 million in NIL money to throw around, I'd rather we spread it around to make massive upgrades all over the place. How does someone go from getting double-digit millions, to deciding to come here? Either we're flush with cash, the story isn't true, or the 13 million/Florida part isn't true.
No matter what, we need to be careful here or we'll lose both Jackson AND this potential upgrade. Like a dude who's been whacking for a year and suddenly gets a great girlfriend, then a week later an SEC cheerleader wants to go out for drinks. Somehow, we'll screw this up and end up whacking alone for at least another year.
The Florida boosters lied. There never was any $13M. They couldn't even come up with the first payment installment, that's why he bailed. He probably won't come here. He'll end up at UW for a fraction of what Florida promised. If he does end up here, it will be in no small part because our boosters don't lie to him and actually make their payments.bearsandgiants said:

He left Miami not for a better money offer. He personally didn't want to go there and was pushed into it.juarezbear said:SBGold said:

Dudes into money. I get it. From what I've read, it appears the Florida NIL folks are reneging and he's not showing up until he gets his money. It's a Mexican Standoff. Fun to watch since it isn't our issue.
The SI article claiming there's interest in Cal is based on a very old quote from Rashada's father. The quote discusses the great relationship with Bill Musgrave. Sloppy reporting drawing current conclusions based on dated information. He might remain interested in Cal, but who knows.Grrrrah76 said:

Lowering academic standards for them means accepting transfer students at all. They were rarely able to admit a transfer because Colorado had very strict view of classes that needed to transfer - Colorado did not accept a ton of football transfer applicants because of they way they viewed other schools coursework. It was a real problem for all coaches there for a long time.MilleniaBear said:
I'm curious about the lowering of academic standards. Do we still have the rule we can take a limited number of academic risk student athletes? What's the number? One per year per sport? I would think that Deon got something similar but his number is like 10 per year..
Jackson has become such an intriguing asset, wouldn't we be more interested in finding a v2 of him. This guy doesn't appear to be that. I'm thinking the same thing about a couple other guys whose names are being mentioned here - maybe they'll transfer, fi they leave where they are, etc. Would they now fit, or are they so good that we would adapt? Rashada's stock is now said to have dropped a bit, anyway, no?BearGoggles said:The SI article claiming there's interest in Cal is based on a very old quote from Rashada's father. Quote:
Brandon Huffman of 247 Sports notes that three Pac-12 schools may have a shot at Rashada -- Washington, Arizona State and Cal.
He based that to some degree on a conversation he had with Rashada's father, Harlan.
Quote:
While Rashada chose Florida over Miami in what was a back and forth recruitment that saw him at one point committed to the Hurricanes as well, California was a school that was on his short list and they'll likely swing away again.
"Cal was like the second school to offer Jaden," the elder Rashada told 247Sports in the summer. "Great relationship with Cal with offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave and assistant coach Burl Toler has been his guy. It's home. It's right in the backyard. I think they're on the up if they can continue to recruit well and he can help them build a class. I think Cal more than anything is relationship-heavy and his heart is locally with Cal and the relationships with those guys."

They absolutely do, they were waiting for something to energize them. One my friends who has a $10K bronze buffalo statue in his backyard just gave them $2M in NIL. I have another buff friend that is of normal means that gave them $50K. While they aren't as wealthy of a fan base in terms of pure numbers as us, they have done an incredible job of courting people in their 40s/50s from when CU was rocking. Also Rick George their AD is very engaged with younger donors and seems like a really, really good guy with a winning drive.dimitrig said:

I seem to recall that we have produced the second highest number of billionaires after Furd. We've done a terrible job grooming those relationships.

Billionaires from Cal and Stanford are generally tech billionaires who could care less about sports.
It's hard enough to convince our alumni to give for ANY cause let alone sports. Depending on how you calculate it and realizing it varies from year to year the alumni giving rate is under 10%.
I still think the REAL NIL money won't directly from individuals but from corporations. I mean, the reason USC is going to the Big 10 is because USC alums at Fox helped make that happen.

The whale's are great, but Cal also has a lot of porpoises from all eras. We need to do more to cultivate them.
If they never became Cal Sports fans and never will, this is why we always need to try and make Cal Football and Basketball games great and very affordable experiences for our undergraduate students.

Have to have an alumni plan that starts the day they first set foot on campus, maybe even before with mailings in advance.Big C said:dimitrig said:juarezbear said:95bears said:They absolutely do, they were waiting for something to energize them. This is why it makes sense to give free season passes to all freshmen and incoming transfers; get them hooked. The problem is that Knucklehead Knowlton thinks free tickets would "devalue" the experience. Even a junior high school dropout crack dealer knows the benefit of giving away something to develop interest. Yes, I'm saying the Knucklehead Knowlton has less sense than a junior high dropout crack dealer.
i used to laugh at the notion of subscription satellite radio, saying what's the problem with switching channels whenever a commercial interrupts the music. Then I bought a car with 3 or 4 months of free Sirius/XM. Within a few days, I was hooked. That was back in 2009, and I'm still hooked.Rushinbear said:Think more broadly.
