Wait a minute, now we're all ok with East Coast travel and winters? Nah, its no big deal anymore, right? Flights are cheap and it doesn't start snowing in MA or PA till January anyway. lol

Cal-Furd to ACC? Re-cast Directors Cup top 25:

SEC = 10 teams (with Texas/Oklahoma there)
ACC = 8 (with Cal/Stanford)
Big 10 = 5 teams (with USC, UCLA, UW...Oregon, finished 38th)
Big 12 = 1

ACC is clearly best option. (FYI - Mtn West best is #66, Air Force). While the "other sports" aren't important to some, they are part of the equation.

If this does happen, and I say 'if' because I thought we were going to the B1G and I'm a little bitter and damaged right now. It seems the late night window for major college football is going to have a lot of competition in a few years.

You'll have the B1G with USC, Ucla, wash and oregon, the Big XII with the 4 corner schools, and the ACC with Cal and Stanford.

None of this makes sense. If Carol hasn't reached out to the B1G because of travel concerns, this is a non-starter.

No way she would sign up for this. And the ACC is dysfunctional right now. I reiterate - the B1G is the only viable option. Carol needs to figure it out or let's close down shop. No one here is going to watch Cal play in the MWC and we are the only fans left.

haha! I love the mental hoops everyone is going through to make this true and the travel issue a non-issue. First we're all about the athletes welfare. Academics come first! Then we judge SC and UCLA on how they're treating their athletes. And now, lo and behold, we are all about that east coast thing. Suspension of disbelief indeed.

Honestly, I doubt this happens but I suppose there is probably some discussions going on. But I look at it through the lens of ACC chaos. If they are entertaining taking us, then there has to be 1-2 schools that are looking for a way out. FSU, UVA or UNC more than likely.

If the B1G offers, we accept, it's that simple. Nonetheless, we also need options, and the ACC is a better option than the MW. The ACC option might allow for a slightly better bargaining position with the B1G.

The college football world is still a post-apocalyptic race to the survival shuttles of either the Big Ten or SEC.

Honestly, it wouldnt surprise me if a separate conference structure arises for just football and basketball. It's in everyone's interest to regionalize the non-revenue sports.

Right now joining B1G would be for all sports. My guess is ACC will take us as football only, but with a lot of OOC basketball and other sports matchups thrown in. That would allow us to join the Big West for all other sports. Better than joining the MWC or B-12.

Oh yeah! Especially UNC's legendary African American Studies program where students got grades/credit and didn't do any work at all . But the NCAA didn't slam them because this "benefit" was extended to non-athletes as well as athletes. So, in some ways, UNC = USC! Academic my @ss . . .

"If Carol hasn't reached out to the B1G because of travel concerns...".

All of your conclusions are based on an unproven statement in the second sentence, which you and Calalumnus have stated and implied over and over again the past week or so. Therefore, it certainly can make sense. Also, even if your premise is true, we may be able to go ACC for football and basketball only and, despite SactownDog being butthurt over Fresno State not offering wine doctorates (they apparently offer whine doctorates), may go to the Big West for other sports.

Pac-4 initially allows us to split up the $420 million left on the table (?) and compete to be one of the top 6 "conference champs" in the CFP.

Joining the ACC (football only) let's ESPN get more money to FSU and Clemson and have more evening product. I think 3:30 games at Menorial are great. 7:30, not so much but beggars can't be choosers.

Basketball could be great but presents logistical problems. We would need to eliminate Thursday night games. Maybe go Friday night/Saturday night and Saturday afternoon/Sunday afternoon?

This is great news. It also gives us leverage with the B1G.

Up until, what, 15 mos. ago, we were talking about limiting night home games. You know, for the "fan experience". Now, if the B1G wanted to have a "Midnight Madness" game, East Coast time, we would schedule every one of our games for 9 PM, in exchange for an invite. And we'd be smiling and thanking them.

"If" is a conditional. Christ herself said travel is a huge concern. The rumor from the B1G was we had not requested admission to the B1G before last week's meeting. The evidence supports those rumors. If you know we did in fact negotiate an offer from the B1G prior to last week, say so instead of just attacking those of us trying to read the tea leaves. We all want concrete info.

This report of discussions with the ACC is great, I have been rooting for it as an option for 14 months. We still have not heard any rumor of negotiations with the B1G but I would guess we are, because we have to, but if you have concrete info we have a standing offer previously negotiated, just share that. .

We are all Cal fans. Let's focus on the GREAT news that we are negotiating a deal with the ACC (includes Notre Dame) and ESPN. And if we also get the $420 million windfall and and easy path to the CFP as PAC-4 champs in 2024, then I will be the first to praise Christ and agree she has been playing 3-D chess.

Yes. In football, the remaining power conferences will shrink and realign into a super conference of, say, 40 teams that will resemble the NFL and be marketed and presented as such. Some of the existing power conference programs will not make the cut and be relegated to a lower status. What was previously a largely regional sport with geographic rivalries will eventually be replaced by a national sport composed of the major "brands" of college football. I'm sure the media companies have analyzed all this and concluded that this type of structure will create the most monetary value for them and for the super programs.
Some college football fans will be turned off by this but most will continue to watch. And the new structure based on the NFL model will probably generate a new group of college football fans.

After the top 40 schools break away and have a playoff, the remaining 80 college football teams can create regional conferences and have a conference champion determined by a round Robin schedule. Then the conference champions of the different regions can play each other in an exhibition game on New Year's day as a reward for their terrific season, and the games can be located in fun warm weather locations like LA, Miami, or New Orleans.

Its college football before the networks were involved!

Well they speak as though they are somewhat keyed into upper level conversations. Speaking of wine and whine, we have whined endlessly about travel. But, since no one wants us (IMO due in no small part to the snobbery you are showing in your post), we are embracing it. Again, mental gymnastics.

Fresno State actually offers 3 doctoral programs but none in viticulture. Either way I thought you 49er wine snobs would like some enology with your chardonnay?

All the complaints here have valid points. But the alternative is oblivion. All athletes who can will transfer if we are not in a P5 (P4) conference. If this moves the B1G to make an offer, great. We'd have a West Coast pod of six. If not, take any decent offer from the ACC. SAVE CAL SPORTS!!

Lol at wine doctorates!

To be clear I have not stated that she hasn't or has - I am just very anxious to know one way or the other. I would be totally surprised if she hadn't in the one year since UCLA made the decision to move. I would be completely bewildered if she hasn't since the events of last Friday. Sadly, if the answer was no, I think our program is dead - there is no way the program is going to have a turnaround that will warrant them being part of the 30-40 schools that make up the final mega conference. Any other option is just delaying death.

So as asinine as it sounds, I now hope she hasn't reached out and will do so immediately. Putting aside Cal/Stanford ... Not having a college football team on the national stage in the Bay Area sucks. I don't buy the no one cares about football here. There just needs to be a good team or two that the whole bay area can rally around. Better marketing and money can solve both. That is why I'm surprised the B1G/media won't just scoop us up on the cheap and force us to deliver...here 35 million per year for the next 5 seasons.
