We will continue to put up with his sh*t.

We can't get rid of Wilcox because of the buyout.
OTOH, I firmly believe that Wilcox needs to hire a common sense coordinator. Someone who could tell him simple stuff that he overlooks day in and day out.
I would have told him Musgrave needed to go 2 years ago.
Last year, after the Notre Dame game I could have told Wilcox he needed to fire Musgrave on the spot (yet he waits till he cost us the Colorado game)
This year, i would have told him that we need a special teams coordinator during training camp
I would have told him the same thing after seeing UNT, Idaho and others run our kickoffs back to the 35 yard line while we gets tackled at our own 15 for our run back

So, I got an email from CAL to reserve a spot for a Zoom meeting regarding the new Chancellor. I think I will reserve a spot and maybe say a few words regarding the need for someone that UNDERSTANDS CAL academically, athletically, culturally, etc. I'm sick of all this crap.

It's sobering to think that Wilcox makes more in one year (pre-tax if not net) than many of us have in our entire retirement nest egg. I've been inclined to stick with him longer than most on this board, but he's too resistant to change when something isn't working.

I don't think we can afford to fire him.
Besides, if we go 2-5 with Mendoza at QB against most of the PAC-12 schedule, with mo blowout losses an upset and the Axe I think most here are reasonably happy. The story quickly becomes next year in the ACC,Mendoza, the portal, etc.
Apparently the things I've been witnessing haven't been from my imagination.Goof Ball Bear said:
What is the definition of insanity? Repeating with the same coach year after year and hoping for different results. It ain't gonna happen. We are stuck with Wilcox because Cal is insane. We can't afford it and we'll be stuck with 4-8 or 5-7 teams with losing conference records and wins over FCS teams until he's gone.
He can't figure out his kicker until he goes 3 for 9. He has benched a QB who looks better in one game against a ranked opponent than two other QBs ever had. And that was in his FIRST game. His ST have sucked periodically throughout his tenure. I don't know of too many coaches after 7 years that still does this crap. His defense has talent but can't stop anyone.
Mendoza might help us steal a game but if our defense can't get off the field and our coaches can't figure out who to play, uh...what does that leave us with?

I wouldn't use the word sobering. It makes me reconsider my career choices. I'm a reasonably smart well spoken non boat rocker who worked hard. My job though had limits on advancement and pay. I've seen too many friends and folks like Wilcox just move up a corporate ladder and make magnitudes more money by just saying and doing the right things, not shying away from new positions and speaking in nebulous terms...sounding like you have the answers, showing that you have concerns and then getting minor things accomplished. I'm over simplifying and generalizing and I'm sure folks will chime in (probably correctly) and mention their career experiences but Cal has had a litany of head coaches that have made fantastic amounts of money and got nothing done. All the while I kept dealing with corporate slogans like pay for performance. I don't know. Have at me. I probably deserve it after this post.

Last night's postgame was the first time I've heard Wilcox question the heart and effort of his players. Normally he's over the top in stressing that effort's present but that consistent execution is lacking. He brought this up by praising Ifanse's toughness and grit and then saying that a couple other guys could learn from him.
It was a major red flag comment and I'm concerned there's simmering team drama, kinda like when we had an OC and OL coach that hated each other. I guess I'm just saying that Wilcox gets praised for "family culture" whatever the **** that actually means, and it seems that doesn't actually exist anymore. He's bad at every single aspect of his job.

In all fairness our defense gave up on the game. They weren't being effective and you could tell in their body language they were frustrated and giving up.
This team has a big 4th down problem. Someone needs to tell our defensive coordinators that forcing fourth and short is NOT a win, especially mid field or closer. So many times I see the defense celebrating and acting like they won forcing fourth and short...and they ALWAYS seem extremely deflated when they have to go back out there for fourth down, and they always seem to give it up.
They keep acting like they did their job and did what it took to get off the field and they are always shocked when teams do well against them.
On the game Oregon State was 6 for 13 on third down. Cal had a higher third down percentage at 5 for 10.
Of those 7 failed 3rd down conversions they succeeded on 4th down 5 times, kicked one field goal, and punted once. All game.
It felt like the defense gave up after the fumble in the fourth quarter...and they certainly didn't put up any resistance after the pic.
I'd be pissed too if I saw the players give up like that. But that comes down to coaching. We seem to be coaching our players to believe that it is a 3 down game. With our special teams spotting the other team mid field every drive we have to assume our defense has to play 4 down defense every single set of downs. Our defense has to be thriving on that and expecting it, not surprised when it happens.
Cause is defined in the employment contract. I would guess that wins and losses is not in the definition of "cause".Econ141 said:

Ummm both pat fitzgerald and Mel tucker are filing wrongful termination suits. Not saying they're necessarily going to win…just saying, good luck finding anything close to that type of wrongdoing against Wilcox.

Glad you, many are catching on to the double talk. He also said it's a privilege to get paid to do the job. That's just a borrowed sound bite. Totally disingenuous bs. This is a big time business. Wilcox is like two generations behind on his PC speak.

I noticed that specific comment (see bold above) too and thought it was a little strange he worded it that way as if he was thinking about a few specific players. He could had made it really general "we all could learn from his mindset" or something like that. This is unraveling pretty quickly.KenBurnski said:
