You have to play the odds, didn't feel good about that decision.

I liked the call until JW called timeout. That was just stupid.

I don't view this as any sort of moral victory. This was a game that we should have won, against a ranked team, and what could have vaulted us into real contention for a bowl game.
What a bummer to miss out on another appearance in the Red-Box-Cheetos-Poinsettia-Figh-Hunger classic...
A "Bowl Week" game is better at just about every level than "No Bowl Game."
No, because bowls get you contract extensions. Sorry to be so negative.

Now, had that bowl been a result of beating SC, UCLA and Stanford, I'd be happy with that. But that's not going to happen now.

We are down 4 running backs.... I think Wilcox decided we were out of soldiers, and needed to end it here.

Also Cal was not going to stop SC in OT

Then we weren't going to stop them from kicking a FG to win in regulation

You're absolutely right.
I turned on the radio for our final drive, down 7.

We drove, scored, and had a play to win.
I'll take it!

Well considering if Endries isn't held the entire time he's wide effing open on the 2 pt conv it wasn't stupid. Pac-12 refs basically won USC that game. That's not being salty..that's literally what happened. The Timeout is meaningless if we score that.

SC with a minute left would have gotten in field goal range, or maybe gone conservative and we're in OT, and with our main RBs out that would have been hard to pull off.

IMO you only go for 2 if it is going to mean a win.
USC still had almost a minute left to try to score so the 2 points did not mean a win.
So I think you at least tie it there so that the rest of the game can play out.
If USC scores again, they would have won anyway.

The Jet was our leading rusher per carry and again showed what he can do outside on the last TD. His speed outside could kill a tired SC defense but fur some reason we kept running him inside

Just stop. It's the wrong call. You never put the game on 1 play unless you absolutely have to. This decision changed nothing for SC if we succeed and everything for us if we fail. And statistically 2 pt conversions aren't 50-50. They're around 40-60. There's a reason they make you do them after the first OT. It's because they will FAIL at a higher rate.

Wilcox has learned absolutely nothing in 7 years. Did the same thing vs AZ year 1 with the same result. We can't afford not to fire him.
Please give to Cal Legends at https://calegends.com/calegendsdonate/donate-football/ and encourage everyone you know who loves Cal sports to do it too.

The only thing I didn't like was Wilcox calling timeout before running the 2 point conversion. That made zero sense. Not only did it give SC'a defense a chance to set up, but it also took away a valuable timeout in the case of a failed attempt.

^This. Time out was really dumb.

I don't think any of this matters. Had we kicked, we probably miss the kick or botch the snap. Had we made the kick, we probably give up the game losing field goal or maybe even a kickoff return td. We were destined to lose because as a group, we suck and don't play smart football, and that gets guys hurt, which makes us suck more.

(Edit: I was responding to a DiabloWags post, not you, Calumnus. Not sure how that happened.)

I've died on the vine for Cal too many times.
And you know, if you are a die hard fan, you're going to die hard 50% of the time.
So, have fun in your current pangs of sorrow - something over which you had ABSOLUTELY ZERO CONTROL.

Also, blame Larry Scott and his stupid Pac12 Network plan which has poor distribution and drove die-hard Cal fans like me away looong ago.

I'd even argue that we are in the ACC next year because of him, but that's another thread.

Not a good choice. USC misses a point after, missed a fg, and missed a 2pt. You take that USC team to OT every time.

Incredibly frustrating loss, a lot like the Auburn game where if we made just one FG we would have been in good shape, Today, had we had just one fewer killer turnover we would have won.

Nevertheless, there were a lot of positives, you have to like the midseason progress at nearly every position.

The team lacks a killer/closer instinct, but it's made enough progress to match up well against a top 25 team.

Exactly. That for me is the miscalculation by Wilcox. If there's no time left, sure go for 2.

But even if you get the 2 point conversion, you are increasing the chances that SC kicks a FG with a minute left because they know they have to score to win. If it's tied, even if they play 10% more conservatively, there's an advantage there. Also if you're able to get them to 4th down, you may be able to force a punt if it's tied.

This was not a 50/50 coin flip call because Wilcox didn't take into account what happens after the 2 point conversion.

Sometimes you need to buck the analytically correct answer. But that was not the time.

The Wilcox defenders are ridiculous. Players make mistakes on the field. Calls will go against you, but the coach who is paid $5 million a year needs to make good decisions to give his players the best chance. He even had a timeout to think about it.
