Since Furd has Notre Dame mid-season, I'm guessing the last game will be the rivalry game, and Rice and Smu back to back with maybe SMU as a Thursday or Friday night game so team stays in Dallas. However, if the last game is played on Thanksgiving weekend, I think you end of the season prediction is better. Also, Rice could be replaced with a certain existing Pac team if they drop their lawsuit.

So you're projecting that we will add Rice as an OOC game? Overall, in my not particularly well informed opinion, that looks like an easier schedule than this year.

I don't see much upside in scheduling Oregon State as an OOC game. Not wild about Washington State either, especially later in the year -- no more dealing with late season weather in the Palouse!

Both of those teams (especially OSU) are usually better than the national perception of them (even though both were ranked this year). So, relatively tough to beat with relatively little national exposure. That seems like a bad deal to me. Pass.

I think we need to take advantage of what could/should be somewhat weaker depth, top to bottom, in the ACC vs. the Pac-12. The difference is very pronounced this year -- Pac-12 is way tougher. My use of the word "somewhat" is an attempt to factor in some weaker P-12 seasons in recent years.

Regardless, we need to start going to bowl games on a regular basis. They can be weaker bowls in the near term, as we build up our program. But bowl games mean 15 extra practices, 1 extra game, and more exposure and credibility (certainly compared to finishing 4-8 in a strong P-12 every year).

Toward this aim, I hate to say this but I think we should lighten up our OOC schedule. Keep the A-B-C format from our P-12 years, but the 4th game should be a likely win, but versus the least embarrassing-looking opponent we can get away with. I really like the idea of playing Rice -- we should beat them AND we get more recruiting exposure in Texas. (Nice pick there, JB Was a Chieftain!).

Cal has had one of the most difficult schedules in the country many, many times over the last 20+ years. Right now, I'd rather have the extra win than a bit more respect from whichever pundits would actually notice and comment on our schedule.

Who agrees and who disagrees on this point?

100%, there is zero recruiting benefit or an assurance of a much needed bowl eligibility win by playing either oregon state or washington state

a series with a beatable texas school like rice would be ideal

Agreed, definitely. This current team is likely going to end up with 4 or 5 wins, but would have likely won 6+ with a typical ACC schedule.

FYI Rice is not that bad a team, they are rated a bit higher than both Stanford and SDSU in Sagarin right now, practically a B- game.

OSU and WSU are very good programs right now, but they will have a hard time maintaining their current level down the road in no man's land/MWC rebranded. We should play one of them every year, with the caveat that we don't travel to WSU late in the season.

As our conference games (other than Stanford) will be with East Coast teams and SMU, I'd like to set up a series with SDSU and Hawaii for strategic purposes.

Thus my preferences are:

1. One B1G or SEC opponent (A)

2. A series against SDSU (B)

3. A series against Hawaii (C)

4. I would eliminate (or greatly reduce) the FCS opponents (play UC Davis or an HBC every couple of years) and add C opponents in good recruiting areas. In years we play at Hawaii and can play a 13th game (and in week zero) add another school from good recruiting areas with possible road trips: Rice, Houston, UNLV, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, Nevada…. Or maybe add a bottom tier SEC or B1G team like Vanderbilt or Northwestern.

I keep telling folks this but yet it keeps getting lost: cutoff the Pacific Northwest from NorCal completely, no scheduling of Oregon and Washingon schools going forward, and as mentioned Texas schools are ideal since we will have exposure in Texas with SMU.

usually the guy with the most input on football schedules, especially OOC games, is the head coach. Take that for whatever that is worth.

Other than Oregon, USC is a better team than the 3 other remaining teams, so that's not an outrageous expectation.

Nice bit of ACC action while we wait on the schedule:

100% agree. Schedule strategically, to gain recruiting advantages. Refuse to schedule PNW teams unless there's a lopsided benefit and focus on Socal to Texas. I'm actually surprised the current 14 ACC teams are letting Cal and Stanford play SMU every year. There's a big recruiting boost possible there.

One other candidate for the 4th non-conf game is UNLV. Army is going to the AAC and the Army @ UNLV game on 10/19 could become Cal @ UNLV. Minimal travel, decent Socal/AZ recruiting benefits, likely W. In fact, we should setup regular games with UNLV and maybe Nevada (played at Allegiant in Vegas).

I think we're gonna get hosed and have road trips to some of Clemson/North Carolina/Florida State, going to Boston and Pitt would be a bit of a reprieve.

If the schedule is typical, we will have home and away games with teams in back-to-back years. My guess is we don't play any of the three that voted against us in the first two years to avoid antagonizing them. That will give Cal a winning record in 2024 and 2025 and get Wilcox extended. Just in time for the tougher schedule to kick in with Spav leaving and Wilcox having to hire another OC….

Clemson is a long roadtrip, located halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte, but UNC is near Raleigh-Durham airport.

Flight to Talahassee probably has one connection, and if we play there, the later in the season the better weather wise.

Way easier. If that schedule was this year, we'd be a 7-5 team. The best team on that schedule is Louisville who probably couldn't beat the 5th best Pac team.

I believe it's not going to be on the basic tier of cable in CA until Fall 2024, but companies like comcast offer it on cable packages a tier above basic. So for someone like me out of the ACC footprint, that upgrade will cost ~10-15/mo.

I did a YouTube TV trial to get an ESPNU game earlier this year and the ACCN was included nationwide and looked nice.

Is there a list of school names somewhere. Have no idea what these symbols mean for the most part. Very frustrating.

Right, other than the Wolfpack wolf, all of these are easily identifiable by any serious college football fan.

Going to try to make the Pitt or FSU roadie, hopefully Pitt falls before November, and FSU after...

Miami at home is not a tall order, and NC State we should be favored.
