Last year soon after the season UCLA went hard after our prime performers. Time to pony up for them
I've not heard that their NIL was withering. They still have Wasserman in the fold, don't they?Big C said:
What's the latest on "Chocolate Chip"'s future in Westwood? (F)UCLA would need to make a "big splash" hire to get any of our players: Losing, rumors that their NIL is withering and they have the example of J-Mike right in front of them. Think he hasn't said anything?
Honestly, even though they are headed to the B1G, their program seems to be descending (maybe short term, but still... )
I actually don't know that UCLA needs more QBs. Moore is supposed to be a 5-star top recruit (not playing like one currently but he is a true freshman and I think it'd be silly to write him off completely right now), Garbers still has eligibility and looks like he'd lead the competition for starting next year, they have 4-star Justyn Martin still riding the bench after he inexplicably didn't transfer out, 4-star transfer from Kent State Collin Schlee, and 3-star Luke Duncan and Chase Griffin as well.SBGold said:

I suppose if they think they'll be losing QBs to the portal and they need to reload but it's not exactly a situation that you can sell to transfers to come right in and start with no competition.

The transfer portal opens in 10 days. In this new era of college sports, NIL is the life blood, and UCLA was unprepared in terms of NIL to be competitive in the transfer portal before this game. Many UCLA donors refused to donate to the NIL Collective as long as Chip Kelly was coach. This loss makes it beyond daunting. If UCLA wants to stay the course with Chip Kelly for next season, it would have to be successful in the transfer portal, and this game will only make donors more adamant in refusing to donate to the NIL fund. You'd have to think if there were donors that gave some money after the USC game, they're now going to put a stop on their donations after this debacle.
Thanks, I hope this comes to fruition. One more year for the Chipster!WalterSobchak said:SBGold said:I've not heard that their NIL was withering. They still have Wasserman in the fold, don't they?Big C said:

I was considering mentioning that but the thing about a player like Ott is that there's always room the field for a playmaker like him. And it's far easier to work in multiple good RBs (or any skill position player on the offense) than having a logjam at QB.wifeisafurd said:
they also had a good running attack other than the Cal game, and you wonder if they need Ott.
Pure speculation it seems. If they want to hurt the competition, maybe they should go after Oregon or Udub players, as it will be a long while before they play Cal again.
You're correct in that the whole point of compensation is to maintain competitive balance. I think the key question here is how you do this without going to a pure corporate and employer/ model which opens up a whole different can of worms. The networks and big-time Athletic Directors are careening down a path towards an unknown destination and they don't seem to care. They just think their school will be one of the survivors and screw all the others.GranadaHillsBear said:
There needs to be some sort of compensation for schools who are targets of poaching by the "big teams". College football has really gone Wild West for creating crazy super teams

Whether some like it or not, I think Wilcox performs quite well when it comes to creating a great locker room culture which is counter to the pull of NIL dollars from other schools. Sometimes just feeling the love isn't worth the extra 25K. It's the same in the real world too.
People where money is an important part of their equation. You have soldiers who return for multiple tours because you have loyalty to your fellow comrades. And then you have Blackwater.socaliganbear said:CALiforniALUM said:

Why would anyone not like this? Who are they?

No, I'm responding to the "whether some of you like it or not" part of the quote. This is not a Wilcox quality anyone dislikes.

UCLA wide receiver Kam Brown has entered the Transfer Portal, according to 247sports' Transfer Tracker. Brown was expected to be a key cog for UCLA's passing attack this year but finished with just 13 catches for 163 yards and one touchdown. Last year, as UCLA's No. 2 or No. 3 option, Brown had 24 catches for 362 yards and three touchdowns. Brown caught just one ball in November, and may have been dinged up as well. ... The expectation is that more names will pop into the Transfer Portal over the next week, especially when the Portal opens for non-graduate transfers on Monday...
