I do think Cal needs another QB but almost every team is having trouble building quality depth at that spot. If SV5 is at least being considered away from the QB role, that does clear a role for someone.6956bear said:Cal played 3 qbs this season. There is a very strong possibility that whoever plays QB in 2024 that they could miss some time with injury. Also what exactly is wrong about letting the competition play out. I loved what we saw from Mendoza and he should absolutely enter Spring as QB1.Joegeo said:Cal has reached out to Boise State QB Taylen Green who entered the portal this morning. Cal does need QB depth I guess but hard to sell guys on being a sure 2nd/3rd stringer.
But you need to have competition on your roster. I would be very disappointed if Wilcox and Bloesch just appointed Mendoza as the QB and allowed no competition for the starters role. But sure Mendoza deserves to be QB1 entering Spring.
One of the things that is happening is the true power programs will go QB hunting every off season. The QBs in the P12 this season were off the charts good. Nix, Williams, Penix, Ward, DJU, Sanders were all transfers. DeLaura before his injury opened the door for Fifita was as well and so was Rising who did not play due to injury.Joegeo said:I do think Cal needs another QB but almost every team is having trouble building quality depth at that spot. Please, not McCord. He has those stats because of the team around him, not him. He's good at everything, but not outstanding at anything. We're not gonna get him anyway, but still...6956bear said:One of the things that is happening is the true power programs will go QB hunting every off season. There are QBs right now that likely can really create competition in the Cal QB room that just need a shot. UO, USC, UW all are QB1 hunting in the portal right now. Kyle McCord is leaving tOSU after throwing for over 3100 yards and going 11-1 as a starter. Why? Because at tOSU 11-1 is not good enough.
I want Cal to find a QB that believes they can win the job. Somebody that gives them a chance if as a backup they need to play. They prefer an experienced player but they need to find somebody that can play a little. No Ryan Glover types.

Looks like Thor Griffith did transfer to an ACC school, but he's off the table going to Louisville.StillNoStanfurdium said:
I wonder if we'd try to go after Thor Griffith, DL from Harvard or Joey Slackman, DL from Penn. Gotta think they'd value the academic side a bit more huh? And they won't be far from home being in the ACC and all.
My hypothesis (non educated guess) is that if they graduated with an Ivy League undergraduate degree, they would be less enticed by a Cal graduate degree compared to going to a school they believe better sets them up for an NFL career.NorCalFBFan said:
I'm not sure how hard we run at those Ivy guys. I'd offer almost every one of the all Ivy guys at the positions we need hoping the great weather, name brand and proximity to Silicon Valley would lure them our way. I don't know how much Cal does that though.
I don't know the potential of the guys involved, but in general, I will say that message board folks have way to much hope in Ivy Football players relative to Ivy Basketball...Basketball has a lot more "closer to high level" talent....NorCalFBFan said:

Have placed a @247sports Crystal Ball prediction for Boise State QB transfer Taylen Green to end up at Arkansas.

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound Texas native accounted for 44 total touchdowns at Boise the last two years.https://t.co/HsmOu5wzj7 pic.twitter.com/ON1KHwt7Zp
It was his first trip. Often in these portal visits the players trip where they think the best opportunity lies first. They want to secure a spot which is why they are in the portal.Joegeo said:Have placed a @247sports Crystal Ball prediction for Boise State QB transfer Taylen Green to end up at Arkansas.

Potentially there goes one of the Cal's QB targets in the portal. Makes sense for him as Arkansas probably has an open spot to fight for.
The Ivy guys, like the Stanford guys last year, seem to be more inclined to be looking for $$$, which makes sense. Smart to get a few 100k before you move to an expensive city to start your career. Louisville apparently has a pretty good collective.NorCalFBFan said:

True. Given what we know about the Qb market and NIL I no longer feel like Cal is really going to be able to land portal QB that will be any real threat to Mendoza. I cannot imagine Cal spending that sort of NIL capital (if they even have it) for a QB. But that apparently is where the market is.wc22 said:

If Cal wants a portal QB they will likely need to settle for an unproven player that may have some upside. And hope that Mendoza is what we believe he can be and then not get hurt.
Well they got a commitment from UNT QB Chandler Rogers. I am a bit surprised by this. He is a nice player IMO that has been productive and accurate. Mobile but not the same level of athlete that Jackson is.Joegeo said:
Maybe they can get an upper classman QB who lost their job or competition at a G5 who would rather be a backup at P5 school and get their cal degree.
Not sure the names for that.

This is the sort of player that Cal needed to bring in as a QB transfer. I understand that Mendoza will enter the Spring as QB1, but this player should make the competition very interesting.

No that guy lost the starting job to Chandler during the season, who then crushed it.

Yes we were rumored to be in the mix last year as well. Looking at his Louisiana-Monroe stats (2022) vs. the UNT stats (2023) I do think Rogers has grown as a player in the past year to make us want to take another look. Even so, I think this feels like we're just wanting to get an experienced backup and possibly someone to push Mendoza in practice vs. someone that's being recruited in over Mendoza. I think it's still Mendoza's job to lose.Econ141 said:Strykur said:And we upgradedNofado said:

Weren't we hot on Chandler Rogers last year only to drop him once SJV became available? Everyone seemed to think then that it was a no brainer to get SJV as Rogers lacked arm strength amd upside. Did that materially change? I get he has experience but are we trying to supplant Mendoza (hope not) or just get a super reliable back up?
How in the world do we know that? Now really questioning your speculation, I mean, isn't this stuff all over the map?wc22 said:
