Probably best for him
And we upgraded

Weren't we hot on Chandler Rogers last year only to drop him once SJV became available? Everyone seemed to think then that it was a no brainer to get SJV as Rogers lacked arm strength amd upside. Did that materially change? I get he has experience but are we trying to supplant Mendoza (hope not) or just get a super reliable back up?
Yes we were rumored to be in the mix last year as well. Looking at his Louisiana-Monroe stats (2022) vs. the UNT stats (2023) I do think Rogers has grown as a player in the past year to make us want to take another look. Even so, I think this feels like we're just wanting to get an experienced backup and possibly someone to push Mendoza in practice vs. someone that's being recruited in over Mendoza. I think it's still Mendoza's job to lose.
I agree that Mendoza enters the Spring as QB1. But many folks that observed practices last Spring and Fall were of the opinion that Mendoza was the best QB. Sure SJV has tools. I saw those tools as well. But SJV struggled and it took Cal 5 games to decide on Mendoza.

I am all for Mendoza entering the Spring as QB1. But Rogers needs to be evaulated evenly in regards for the QB1 spot for 2024. if he clearly outperforms Mendoza do you stick with Mendoza regardless?

Cal needs to learn from 2023. The best players have to play. If Rogers is better he should play. If equal then Mendoza gets the call, but will need to earn the right to stay on the field with performance.

I am not saying Rogers is better. I am saying let the practice performances determine who plays.

Would be a big interior presence, I'm hoping for at least one of Hastings or Slackman and for our defense to get back to what we had come to expect out of Wilcox. Lots of good DBs in the portal too although I expect we're in a very good position with Isaiah Crosby (#3 rated Juco Safety) who's announcing his decision today at 3

Is Taj Davis gone? No sign of him on theatest depth chart.

Hastings looks like he's getting a lot of offers and was previously a 4-star recruit in 2022. Seems like he'd be a nice get but he has a lot of options like SCAR, UW, BC, Houston, Michigan State, Illinois to name a few.

No, Wilcox announced that he was moving on at his press conference

Would be a tough fight for sure but we've won recruiting battles over all of them recently, it just comes down to the player in question and their priorities. It would definitely be nice to see Andrew Browning win a highly-contested recruiting battle though, his momentum from a couple years ago seems to have tapered off some

A quick glance at the depth chart, and it's pretty obvious. We are very young as a team. There's a lot of potential here that in another year or two we could be much better.

Nice to see Plummer, Dortch, and N. Hunter on the depth chart. Hope they get some bowl reps so we can see them in action.

David Reese announcing his return is a big, big deal for our defense coming into next season. OLB and pass rush was going to be a question mark and he really came on strong at the end of the season

Didn't realize Reese had eligibility left..that's great news. You're right, he really did play great in the last few weeks and seemed like it finally 'clicked' for him. He was a constant menace to QBs.

I read it in an article from SI. We're not allowed to post links to competitor articles but idk if a tweet with the link in it counts. Either way the tweet itself has the relevant info and if it gets scrubbed then it gets scrubbed

I mean I have no issue with that. Tbh other than personal opinions and evaluations that's most of what I do here. I just haven't seen if this is even true that he visited or not which would itself be big news

Oklahoma reportedly lost a key contributor on Tuesday.

Cayden Green, a true freshman from Lee's Summit North (MO) who started five games for the Sooners at left guard, told On3 he intends to enter his name into the transfer portal.

Rated a 4-star recruit by 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN, Green was Bill Bedenbaugh's highest-rated offensive line prospect at Oklahoma at the time of his commitment.

The talented offensive lineman was not seen at the portion of Oklahoma's practice that was opened to the media on Tuesday afternoon.

Recruited as an offensive tackle, Green made an impact at guard after Savion Byrd exited OU's non-conference game against Tulsa with an injury.

Troy Everett initially took over between left tackle Walter Rouse and center Andrew Raym, but Bedenbaugh turned to Green against Texas and the true freshman starred.

WR is an interesting place right now for the roster depending on if Hunter stays or go. Hopefully, the young players are stepping up and give confidence to the staff that we just need maybe 1 starting level WR rather than overhauling the room.

Yes the WR room is an interesting one right now. I do not know what Jeremiah Hunter will do but my sense is he is leaning towards preparing for the NFL draft. Davis is gone. Hightower and Young are out of eligibility. So if Jeremiah leaves that leaves only Grizzell and Mavin Anderson as returning players with any real game experience.

Montgomery apparently is becoming a TE. So the WR room looks really light on experienced production. The staff sees the reserves every day and they may see real potential, but I have real reservtions right now.

Nyziah Hunter and Marquez Dortch can both run. Can they run routes and catch the ball. Javien Plummer looks the part in his uniform but is yet to play other than STs.

I would really love to see a couple of experienced and productive WRs come via the portal. The HS Wrs look promising. I really think Rogers and Martin can be good players. But for that to happen in 2024 seems a bit optimisitic. Clark may end up on offense, but most project him to be a better DB prospect. He is a good athlete though.

I could see Trevor Rogers being an immediate impact player at WR, he's 6-3 200lbs with speed and down field threat on the outside but he can also play the slot and take a slant or screen for a huge gain. Josiah Martin also has gamebreaking speed and so does Ja'Mori Maclin the transfer teammate of Chandler Rogers who visited and we're going after.

Regardless were significantly upgrading our speed profile on offense to run an open spread system with focus on YAR for our wideouts (presumably based on the offense to end the year though I guess we'll see in our bowl game how it looks under Bloesch officially)

Really excited to see what Rogers can do. Tall order but he's in the TMac mold. Almost identical measurables coming out of HS. Really impressive what Rogers did at Acalanes which has virtually no history of football success.

Big news today, for (at least) the next 14 days every player is eligible to transfer regardless of previous transfer status. No one-year wait time, no transfer denials and appeals, no questions asked. This is how players like SJV will be immediately eligible at their destination, and may usher in an even more wild exodus of players from schools across the country

It's big news if the order becomes permanent. It would mean that every college athlete would be a "free agent" at the end of every season, free to play at a different school the next season.

It would probably have an even bigger impact on basketball than football, given that landing two elite transfers could turn a sub-.500 team into an NCAA tournament team and get a head coach off of the hot seat and into a multi-year contract extension.

Could be beneficial for all parties, if coaches can quickly turn around their programs around then less headaches for athletic departments and institutions with having to get rid of coaches and more opportunities for athletes, only question is, ya know, actually getting a degree.

True but I actually think that the transfer portal and NIL has created much more CFB parity. Teams can't horde 4*/5* recruits for multiple years in loaded position groups where guys have to just sit and wait their turn and only get one shot at transferring to make it right.

Guys don't have to be as patient and can go somewhere else to showcase their talents. Lots of players who go to an Alabama or OhSt would rather go be **the** guy at a Louisville (who was really good this year), FAU, or Memphis rather than wait it out for their turn (which might never come) at the big programs.

If a guy isn't a starter and a stud their freshman year they can go prove themselves somewhere else and then transfer back to a CFP contender if they want. I'll take 1+ years of elite play regardless of transferring out

Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy has entered the transfer portal with three years of eligibility remaining. Murphy will not participate in the College Football Playoff, leaving five-star freshman Arch Manning as the primary backup to Quinn Ewers.

Murphy ranked as the No. 9 quarterback in the in the Class of 2022, according to 247Sports. Manning and Ewers each ranked as the No. 1 overall recruit in their respective classes. Murphy boasts an impressive an 6-foot-5, 235-pound frame and a cannon arm that gives him close to unparalleled upside. He missed much of 2021-22 dealing with injuries, leaving him plenty of untapped potential.

The new rules, or lack of rules, benefit the players because they can move to try and find a better situation and/or more NIL.

I'm not sure it increases parity, though. When Alabama or Ohio State wants a transfer player at a certain position, they'll get the best ones out there, or they'll recruit players on other rosters to enter the portal and transfer. Some of the QBs in the portal this year, for example, were quickly matched up with a big name team, and some of them probably only entered the portal after a team like Notre Dame or Oregon expressed interest.

Just look at how many top tier teams there were this year (8 deserved playoff spots at least reasonably equally) and look how the SEC had their weakest year in a long time. I think NIL balanced out talent across the Power conferences as much as it's been since pre-CFP era

The talent market has become more fluid and much more reactive but being on the cusp of a 12-team playoff means teams do not need to horde talent to begin with to be in the mix.
Bearly Clad
How long do you want to ignore this user?
They don't need to but it doesn't stop them from wanting to hoard talent the same way they always have. They're just not able to in the same way

SEC boosters have been handing out "NIL" payments for years. Making it legal just allowed others to narrow the gap.

It's seeming less and less like the college football I grew to love, but maybe some more wins can keep that love alive.
