I agree that Mendoza enters the Spring as QB1. But many folks that observed practices last Spring and Fall were of the opinion that Mendoza was the best QB. Sure SJV has tools. I saw those tools as well. But SJV struggled and it took Cal 5 games to decide on Mendoza.StillNoStanfurdium said:Yes we were rumored to be in the mix last year as well. Looking at his Louisiana-Monroe stats (2022) vs. the UNT stats (2023) I do think Rogers has grown as a player in the past year to make us want to take another look. Even so, I think this feels like we're just wanting to get an experienced backup and possibly someone to push Mendoza in practice vs. someone that's being recruited in over Mendoza. I think it's still Mendoza's job to lose.Econ141 said:Strykur said:And we upgradedNofado said:
Probably best for him
Weren't we hot on Chandler Rogers last year only to drop him once SJV became available? Everyone seemed to think then that it was a no brainer to get SJV as Rogers lacked arm strength amd upside. Did that materially change? I get he has experience but are we trying to supplant Mendoza (hope not) or just get a super reliable back up?
I am all for Mendoza entering the Spring as QB1. But Rogers needs to be evaulated evenly in regards for the QB1 spot for 2024. if he clearly outperforms Mendoza do you stick with Mendoza regardless?
Cal needs to learn from 2023. The best players have to play. If Rogers is better he should play. If equal then Mendoza gets the call, but will need to earn the right to stay on the field with performance.
I am not saying Rogers is better. I am saying let the practice performances determine who plays.
