They really should back the portal opening dates from 1/1 to 1/15. Sucks to see players making the choices before the bowl games.

The name you should've highlighted Blough as we're losing our coach Tim Plough and not someone like NFL practice squad QB David Blough.

Does this affect whether or bit they play in the bowl? Thinking of Elarms-Orr, of course.

I was wondering if Luckhurst would get another shot to get past the heebie-jeebies. I got my answer.

Wait what? What's the backstory on this? Does he think he's going to get passed up by someone next year?

We finally had a somewhat competent kicking game

He is a special teams player on a team with no special teams coach.

I'd want some coaching.

that special teams unit dominated fUCLA and the furdies. I guarantee you they get some coaching. He likely wants a scholly.

I'm a bit perplexed why a walk-on needs to use the portal. If he can walk on why can't he just walk off? He never signed a NLI did he?

With that being said he's shown he can make kicks in live P5 games, and there's value in that.
Please give to Cal Legends at https://calegends.com/calegendsdonate/donate-football/ and encourage everyone you know who loves Cal sports to do it too.

To be in the Top 1% of all NIL collectives we only need around 10% of alumni to give $300 per year. Please help spread the word. "If we don't broaden this base we're dead." - Sebastabear

Doesn't everyone, normal students and athletes, sign NLI's? Thats what I remember they called it when I accepted.

Don't punters and kickers have their own personal coaches that they workwith in the offseason and maybe some occasional midseason consulting? I always assumed the special teams coach focused on blocking and coverage schemes.

I'm not sure what you mean. NLI is only for athletes, but even for them it's not required. I've never heard of a non-athlete signing an NLI. I'm not sure what the purpose would be.

Ah you are right. Looks like what I was referring to is a statement of intent to register.

LOI means Letter of Intent. This is the document signed by non-scholarship athletes (walk-ons) and team managers to show their commitment to the university. NLI is a National letter of Intent and is signed by athletes who will be receiving an athletic scholarship from the university.

Probably offered a scolly and some money elsewhere
Most power conference teams don't offer scholarships to kickers, but maybe Bhaghani can find one.

Most likely motivation is to find a place where he'd be the clear #1 kicker. If he stayed at Cal, he would be competing with Luckhurst for next year's kicking job. Maybe Luckhurst doesn't have the yips next year and kicks well. He had already won the kickoff job back by the end of this season.

Entering the portal gives him leverage. He can always return to Cal as a walk-on, that is given. He is enrolled, it is not like he is putting a scholarship at risk so he has nothing to lose. Now he can maybe get a scholarship or just a (better?) NIL offer. Maybe UCLA? Basically this allows him to see what is available out there, get his education paid for in the very least. Maybe even at Cal.

I may be in the minority here, but I feel we can upgrade the position. For the majority of the season, the staff was afraid to kick anything longer than a 40 yarder. That doesnt reflect well on his capabilities.

He can only come back to Cal if Wilcox lets him and that sets a dangerous precedence unless he did this with Wilcox's blessing. If it isn't, he is gone.
