This past year, Cal won NCAA national championships in men's swimming and water polo and an IRA championship in men's rowing.

Or possibly our participation in it, largely due to the contract.
No doubt the ratings were recognizing Knowlton's astute observation that other schools were better suited to negotiate Cal's entry into the ACC and wisely stayed out of their way.
