Pittsburgh is an absolute midwest ****hole. The 20 story buildings next to their city center municipal courthouse area are abandoned with broken boarded up windows. Coming out of the tunnel to the 3 rivers is cool, but then you enter Pittsburgh.

When I tailgate I always set up downtown near the city municipal center. Sigh

Pittsburgh is reinventing itself after the steel industry collapse. Do some research and you'll find some cool areas near the stadium to keep you busy for a 3 or 4 day trip to see Cal play.
I spent several weekends working there, walking almost everywhere. It was an ugly ass, dirty, depressing place. Perhaps that's just the midwest. Milwaukee was the same. When the highlight of an entire city is the sportsball stadium, well, again, perhaps thats the big midwest cities. (The Brewers stadium, whatever its branded, is super cool and then you leave and you're in Milwaukee again).

The area of Milwaukee by the lake is quite cool and walkable, good breweries, restaurants

Pittsburgh is lively, full of interesting ethic neighborhood, great museums and food

Perhaps living in a boring, cultural s$ithole like Oregon has not prepared you well for anything but chain saw accidents

Oregon is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Museums are great; you don't live in a museum. Also, get this, Portland is also a ****hole.

Pittsburgh is an underrated city, especially if you like bridges. In every disucssion I have seen of ACC away trips people like the city, but consider it is a crap venue for college football (small crowd in large NFL stadium, etc.).

Going to Auburn, FSU and Wake (with trip to Asheville).

Outside of California and the Pacific Northwest only passable wines are whites, imo. Red grapes suck up way too much water in every other region and it all tastes watered down. Nothing compares to CA in the US of A. You'll find some tasty whites in the finger lakes. Even in Ohio they make a few good ones. If you love reds tho, you'll be disappointed. There are some places that do good reds by importing their grapes from California, but that's cheating, imo.

What is your opinion of Tannat? It seems to be a big bold red that can handle wet climates (from France but became the national grape of Uruguay). Being grown in Virginia and Texas (as well as Lodi and Pase Robles). I haven't tasted but sounds a lot like a Zin in character.

That sounds fantastic! Have never tried it but will make a point to. If it's successful coming out of Virginia that would really be something. I suppose there are genetic engineering phenomena that are making anything possible anywhere, these days, too. Hadn't thought about that possibility as well, but that feels like cheating, too. A varietal that naturally stands up to harsh weather would really be a winner.

No genetic engineering, just has naturally really thick skin, making it mold and cold resistant, sheds water (so good in rainy, humid weather), is really high in antioxidants, big fruit, but it has a lot of tannins so it either needs to be blended, aged or, in a new process, oxygenated.

Like Zin or Malbec, sounds like it would go good with BBQ.

Has a Cal connection too as the first US planting was in the 1800s by Prof. Hilgard in the Berkeley campus garden:

You got it backwards:

" In the wines, this mild climate makes Oregon Pinots lighter in color, and more delicate in structure. California Pinots, which ripen easily thanks to California's constant sunshine, tend to be darker and more purple in color (think about someone who lives by the beach vs. someone who just vacations there), and have riper, darker fruit flavors as a result."

Sure more "similar to French Pinot Noir" (due to climate) but that is opposite of what you first wrote because Oregon Pinot is, as explained in the above article, more pale and "watery" than California Pinot due to less sunlight. The article explains it and gives some good examples of both. Just depends on your preference. Pale and watery "delicate" Pinots <are> more similar to French Pinots and (like white wines) go great with the delicate flavors of French food. In California we tend to go for bolder flavors which I enjoy with big bold reds, but there are California vintners (especially in Sonoma) producing great Pinots in the lighter French style too and California regularly beats Oregon in international competitions.

Really, trying to tout Oregon over California in wine is like touting Oregon over California in movie production or Mexican food (any cuisine really) or technology or weather or beaches or trees or mountains or Nobel Prizes, or Gold Medals or…. I mean, this is a football board and you have a better football program right now so why not just stick with that?

Seriously thinking about Pittsburgh. My dad grew up about 30 miles away and so I would be taking my kids on sort of a "finding your roots" trip (plus Cal Football!). Will depend on how it looks in terms of their classes and sports.

A Cal friend of mine is moving to Tallahassee in a few weeks, but that trip for me might have to wait until next time... if there is a next time.

Agreed. I got an MBA from UM 45 years ago - lived on S Main about four blocks from the stadium. Ann Arbor in autumn is stunning - trees changing color, humidity gone, crisp days with the occasional warm one. Five-mile runs through the Arboretum and along the Huron river. The emphasis on UM football was a bit stifling (certainly by Cal standards) if you lived in it, but great on a Football Saturday. Like Berkeley, I'm sure it's changed a lot since then, but it was a real college town. All that being said, Ann Arbor winters were too rough for this Bay Area kid. As soon as I got my degree, I got my @ss back to California.

There isn't a game vs UNLV in 2025. It's likely the 4th noncon game that season will be a home game vs an FCS team.

Presumably the future scheduled series with Wyoming will be canceled.

I'll guess that 2026-27 will see a series vs one of the ex-Pac teams now in the Big 12, 2026 away and 2027 at home.

This is a tough one depending on what you value in a road trip, for me it would be a balance between the football part and the things to do nearby. Overall, it would be hard to imagine an overall better itinerary than the Notre Dame/Chicago trip a couple years ago. It had it all, game in a famous venue against iconic program, Wrigley field, Lake Michigan, killer food and culture options in Chicago, decent weather in September, easy travel, etc. A Cal W was the only thing I didn't get but it was a trip my entire family will never forget. From a pure football experience, I would lean Michigan, Penn St, LSU just off the top of my head, but they aren't quite as compelling to me based on the surrounding area. LSU has NOLA close by but the weather of a theoretical Sept matchup would be at least a minor points deduction. Some actual matchups I am interested in the coming years are actually Syracuse (Niagara, Cooperstown), BC (never been to Boston and love history of that area), and VT (enter Sandman), but none of these are probably marquee opponents, although VT tends to overperform from time to time.

When I went to the Cal -- Texas game around 2015 I went to many great barbecues but also read, when I was there, that the Texas hill country an hour or so outside of Austin made some good wines. So I decided to visit there. California doesn't grow the grapes that make their wine, mostly. But they tasted pretty good. oo

Also, I should mention that eastern Washington grows some good wine grapes. A lot of it is shippped to corporate wine headquarters near Seattle to process the wine. My son went to Whitman college in southeastern Washington, a good school in a great tourist town, with several very nice winerie that make their wine there. There are direct flights from SFO into Pasco, an hour west of Walla Walla.

Very advance scouting since Cal doesn't play at Clemson until 2029 assuming both teams still are in the ACC. Clemson comes to Memorial in 2026.

The run up for hurricanes is several days most of the time ("springing up in the gulf" is a different deal)....will have a better idea about whether there is a threat for Auburn by this time next week, but Tallahassee is too far off.
And just to emphasize: a hurricane can happen and easily not be in play for either city...
