Does anyone else think that playing the first ACC game with FSU and then this silly mention of Game Day might have led the Bears to play so poorly against a very fired up SDSU team? Diehard Bear fans (like me) have been so desperate for so long, we often lapse into these delusional dreams. Let's just beat FSU.

The idea that there is a correlation between what's posted here possibility plays out on the field is pretty silly.
And though GameDay potentially might fire up the crowd for the day, the teams have no real involvement with the show, except maybe an extra feature and/or interview.
You want to blame having head in the clouds after winning at Auburn? They covered, the penalties are correctable... let's not look for "moral losses" hidden in a win...

It's funny how towards the end of the game the commentators brought up Gameday for Miami, saying that a win at FSU would set it up, also mentioning that GD was never at Cal for FB. They're in the broader social media loop associated with this board.

Yes! I was like "oh **** just got real"...lol

what are the chances GD comes even if we are 3-1? Still a compelling game to showcase.

I think that's a good question. I think the FSU game would have to be highly competitive: a loss on last second FG, OT, etc...

If we were drawing 60k per game, I'd like our chances better. ESPN will probably consider that. A good example is Auburn. They had a big crowd against New Mexico after a loss to Cal....we draw 35k after giving some tix away against SDS after a win...

I think we need to get into the T25 to have a shot. We are still very far away with all of these uninspired wins. #35 at the moment. Beat FSU and we might get to about #27 or #28 and then we hope for a few upsets during the bye

I think if we are 4-0 then we get ranked.

And honestly, most voters are not going to care about the details of the SDSU game. They're just going to see a 31-10 final score and think it looks fine. That plus winning at Auburn and (hypothetically) at FSU would equal a Top 25 ranking.

Looks like you left out the key factor that Cal is the only team on your list that has never played on GameDay, only one of six FBS teams who have not.

Enough already. Cal has played on Game Day.
You post the same incorrect crap.
If you'd write Cal has never hosted Game Day, you'd be correct. But since you have posted Game Day threads over and over, I'm assuming you're senile.

I'm not sure if we need to be ranked to get GameDay since there may not be any other games with two ranked teams, but I have no idea why everyone here feels so assured that Cal would be ranked of we go 4-0.

Cal is 3-0 now and isn't close to being ranked. We'd have to leapfrog 10 teams to get a ranking and a win against a team that's 0-3 isn't going to justify it. The best bet seems to be that enough team lose between next week and the bye week that we sneak in without playing.

First of all, let's see how close we are to a ranking this week after going to 3-0 with a 21-point win. We should be closer.

And yeah, secondly you have to think about what happens with the teams that are currently ranked from 15-30. They won't all win. Many will take losses.

The Gameday decision is taken a week in advance apparently.

Looking carefully at the current rankings, 35 in AP and 38 in the coaches, it's not a given that we will be ranked if we beat FSU next week.

I think the GD people have penciled in the Michigan at UW game for the week of the Miami game early in the season, for obvious reasons (rematch of the NCG, new B10 alignment, bigtime programs and rabid local fan base). I am not sure if UW's close loss in their rivalry game is really enough to change that at this point, or Michigan's bad loss to Texas. It might all ride on the USC game next week, if it's another bad home UofM loss, then that might do it (combined with Cal and Miami winning). All the other Michigan and UW games the next 2 weeks are very winnable.

It might also help to start having a grassroot campaign for Gameday at Cal, this would be a good place to start:

I did wait. The rankings are already out. That's why I posted that at 3-0, we're still 10 spots out. Do I think 10 teams might lose between now and Miami? Yes. But next week? That's probably a stretch.

I believe I was the first person to suggest Cal should pitch to ESPN that Cal should be considered to host ESPN College GameDay this season. I started mentioning that at least a month ago on Bear Insider. Cal is one of only six FBS football teams to never host GameDay.

To date I have not seen any public evidence from inside the Cal bureacracy indicating that Cal is interested in hosting GameDay. If I am wrong about that, who is in charge of heading this project at Cal?

Thanks.

There was nothing uninspired about the Auburn win. Cal covered yesterday. And fine, maybe they just want a chance to talk more about a highly ranked Miami team.
Has GameDay ever been at a location of an unranked team? Let me go back and check the records...oh right, yesterday....

I don't think they have that game "penciled" in. Both are shells of what they were a year ago. Today, Miami is ranked ahead of Michigan and Cal is ranked ahead of Washington, who lacks a single AP vote. We at least have some votes.

Regardless, we need to win at FSU. We'll then have a whole week to see how week 5 pans out and then we'll have a better feel.

If Cal beats FSU, Gameday will come to Berkeley. 100%. Having said that we just jinxed it and Cal will get rolled by FSU.

Right now there are 43 undefeated teams. Most of whom probably draw better than Cal. And many 1 loss teams will move the needle more than Cal on a national basis. How do we know that many of these teams move the needle more than Cal? How many conferences were begging to add us? I hope I'm wrong, I really do, but ESPN has no idea how many fans will even show up to a GameDay in Berkeley. So If I'm them, I'd wait a season to see if there's enough buzz here that we don't have to give away tickets. But I'm not an ESPN exec, so hope springs eternal...

This is the worst relationship ESPN has had with the Big 10 in the lifetime of most of the people reading this. How that manifests itself is definitely TBA, but the promotion of ACC and SEC schools is in their interest more than ever before.
If you want to fall on the "journalism" sword for GameDay, all I can say is I don't know... but I think it's going to take a lot for them to be on the site of a game not on one of the Disney channels.

We don't know yet. For all we know they might go back to College Station when Mizzou goes to A&M. Both schools will produce eyeballs, be in the top 25 probably and are SEC. I would hope we would merit consideration versus them going back there a second time in 6 weeks but $$$$$ speak for themselves.

I see it stated a few times in this thread, but let's state it explicitly:

Can we please just focus on SDSU?!

As nice as it is to speculate and dream, threads like this get us to 2-1, followed by threads in 2030 "remember the time we were 2 weeks away from game day?"

I didn't think about SDSU until my alarm said it was starting in 3p minutes and we won.

Can we stop pretending that enthusiasm of fans will somehow cause the team to lose?

Seriously, without looking forward to what could be, what's the point of being a sports fan.

It would probably be a no-brainer if Cal is undefeated, top 25 and Miami is in the top 10 and we routinely fill up the seats. But think like a ESPN exec, would you go to Cal seeing a program (and Furd before us) that can't draw in the Bay Area?

Even Pitt-NC might be more palatable because it's about dollars and cents.

Anyway, one thing that does seem likely is that whether or not Gameday comes to Berkeley, if Miami comes in undefeated I think the game is likely to be picked as a prime time ABC broadcast. Would be a great chance for Cal to do something on a big network TV stage, something we haven't had in a long while.
