Miami has two relatively easy games (Ball State and S. Florida) and should be 4-0, ranked in the middle of the top 10 before their game in Berkeley. If we can do our part in Tallahassee against a vulnerable FSU team and also get to that game 4-0 and ranked, the game becomes an attractive and original matchup (first ever Cal ACC home game). The Mendoza story is a compelling one, local kid who dreams of following his father's footsteps and play for the Hurricanes passed on by most programs, snatched by Cal from Yale, becomes leading contender for all-conference as a Soph.

The main other contenders for gameday that Saturday are listed below, I am also assuming that the Gameday decision is only done 1 week in advance (could be earlier than that):

Clemson at Florida State:
If we beat FSU, they would be 0-3 and dead last in the ACC, unranked and out of contention for the playoffs. The beauty here is that we can make sure that this game doesn't get picked...

Auburn at Georgia:
Likewise, Auburn unranked thanks to our win, looks like a blowout or at least a decisive UGA win and uncompetitive game.

Missouri at Texas A&M
Mizzou is ranked high, but haven't played anyone yet, root for BC to bring them down a notch this week. TAMU has lost to Notre Dame, which looks bad after the Domers' disastrous home FCS loss.

Michigan at Washington
A literal replay of the last NCG, and another "exotic" realignment matchup that looks like a 1990s Rose Bowl pairing. On paper a few weeks ago a slam dunk for Gameday, but with Michigan having been heavily deflated by their meltdown against Texas and UW unranked and lacking star power this year, it's no longer a given. USC beating Michigan 2 weeks from now would further downgrade that game. Root for WSU against UW a little harder than usual (funny how the Apple Cup now falls during apple season...)

Alabama at Vanderbilt
Both teams currently undefeated but Bama has at least one loss the next two weeks vs Georgia and Wisconsin, Vandy loses vs Missouri, but the main reason this won't be on Gameday is that its crew will be at Tuscaloosa the week before for the showdown against Georgia.

So basically if we win the next two, Gameday in Berkeley for the Canes is pretty likely.

SDSU and FSU are doable.

Berkeley in early October is a beautiful place to be!

It would be good if we got the Rose Bowl quarterfinal game in the playoff spot

I like the analysis but if you think Wisconsin has a chance against Bama, you haven't watched Wisconsin.

I think USC needs to beat Michigan or the Washington/Michigan game will be too tough to pass up.

For Wisconsin, it won't matter as Bama will be the underdog vs Georgia in 2 weeks, but the main reason they won't be on Gameday that week is that the crew will be at Bama for their game against the Bulldogs the week before. This also disqualifies Clemson vs Georgia for Gameday.

We just have to win the next two games. Not to get too far ahead of ourselves….

Game Day at Berkeley against Miami would be huge and with a sellout crowd I'd like our chances of pulling the upset putting us in first place having cleared three of the "most likely loss" games coming into the season.

I wonder if making a movement of this on X/Twitter would help. #GameDayatCal or something.

there's no freaking way i'm going to waste brain cells dreaming about this until we win next two. @Tallahassee is no cake walk and I don't care how bad their record is.

ESPN GameDay isn't going to a B1G conference game televised by FOX. ESPN is Team SEC all the way unless they have a top ACC or B12 game. I think something like a #7 Miami (5-0) @ #21 Cal (4-0) has a great chance if we both keep winning.

I mean Texas A&M already hosted gameday.

Washington is not anything special this year. Michigan is looking like an average bowl team.

Vandy is very unlikely

Auburn having to go on the road and play at Georgia has blowout written all over it

FSU and Clemson are not the same a past years

However, Cal Vs Miami is the most intriguing option to many college fans imo. If we can win the next 2 games, this is a very interesting matchup to watch (potential ACC contenders).

Can you imagine College GameDay on the Memorial Glade? Tailgating? And going to memorial and seeing a sold out crowd?

~ throw together an a i video, SEC-Shorts style even, of 'Hotel California' with some real or imagined cover/tribute band 'fair-use' version, or flip a few lyrics, & visuals from Cal Berkeley's storied football, academic, & cultural repertoire - Game Day hooked . . . + Starkey, naturally

btw, had this view from Bay area living-room fireplace couch low on horizon over neighbors ivy-covered fence, only a few months per year - eat your heart out

Gameday usually makes it a point to try go to schools they haven't visited yet. Going to Berkeley would actually be a big deal for gameday. They just need a somewhat compelling reason to do so.

A Mountain West team getting shut out at home will have that effect.

There would definitely be plenty of backstory, and I believe game day wants to go to Berkeley. but none of that matters if they dont win against SDSU and FSU.

Also they are being disregarded after a horrendous week 1 loss but don't be surprised if Virginia Tech pulls it together and surprises Miami the week prior.

Question..... assuming all of this happens, would Cal + the athletic department allow it? Where would the event actually take place?

The glade probably makes the most sense. But if I'm gameday, I'd want to do it on sproul cause it's so iconic.

I think if it's Christ, maybe this would all be a challenge. But I have to assume that Lyons would understand the importance of having gameday.

The real question is whether students are going to get up that early.

I remember going to gameday at USC in '04, it was sooooo early. Godamn

I recall that when Cal was good at basketball, students were up at o'dark thirty to run to buy tickets...and that wasn't even televised.

I have very little faith in this generation of students. Tik tok, K-pop and anime has taken precedence over sports. But maybe they'll surprise me.

As i said in the other thread:

1. Basketball College Gameday already came here in 2010.

2. They were supposed to come in 2009. All we had to do was beat Oregon. Instead, we lost to Oregon 42-3.

3. Memorial Glade is a big area and perfect for Gameday.

Do we have any proof that any previous administration turned down Gameday? I don't believe what that former ESPN executive, who has a history of lying, said.

Yeah, college students are known for being up all night, particularly on a weekend. And they would totally be up for something totally different. I can't imagine it being a ghost town.

It starts at 6 am, which means they have to be there at 3 am to 4 am, which means it's not really that early at all. (If they had to be there at 8 am, then I'd have doubts.)

UCLA is probably most similar to us.

Here's UCLA in 2021. College Gameday's previous visit was in 1998.

If we get CGD is there a likely spot for our kickoff time?

Also regardless of kickoff do they start the show real early esp for the east coast audience?

Will!! Hope you're well.

In short: no, and yes.

KO for a west coast game has been anything from 12:30 pm (USC v. Cal 2004 as I recall?) to 5pm evening ABC prime time. I can't definitively say they have never done a 7:30 pst kick, but I don't think so from a marketing and eyeballs perspective.

ESPN GameDay always starts at 9AM Eastern to air before 12PM Eastern kickoffs (back in 2007 when we played in Eugene I was up quite early to catch the GameDay crowd)

There is a lower level in Barrows where I had a class in the summer of 2008(?), it was damp and hot, but at least the class was interesting.
