I am the person who first mentioned, at least a month ago, that Cal had never appeared on ESPN College Gameday and should submit a request to do so. At that time, I suggested that appearance should be against Miami, since it would be a game relatively early in the season,Miami was projected to have a good season, and also that Cal is only among six FBS teams that have never appeared on GameDay.
Since that time Cal has won its first two games this season, leading to some Cal fans to get excited about Cal's chances this football season. There has been many posts on this blog about the details relating to a possible Cal GameDay television appearance this season and what Cal should do relating to that.
I don't want to get into the possible options Cal may have relating to the time GameDay would occur if Cal was a team that appeared on it. Not sure if the game could be played in the afternoon rather than earlier, but likely not. I'll leave that topic to those who know the GameDay rules relating to that, as perhaps that GameDay festivities at Cal must start as early at 6 a.m, Pacific time, to allow it to start later in the day in other time zones. I am not sure GameDay only appears in the morning, but it appears that could be possible. Others may want to comment on this issue.
The real reason I am writing this is to suggest who should represent Cal on the pregame GameDay program. I think Cal should be represented by Chancellor Rich Lyons, who attended the 1982 The Play game as an undergrad at Cal, Kevin Moen, who scored the winning touchdown for Cal as part of The Play, and Joe Starkey, who called The Play on the radio, leading to his call of it to be linked up to the video footage of it. If shown on TV, it should include Starkey's post touchdown rant right after the refs ruled The Play as resulted in a Cal touchdown, through Starkey's ending statement that "there will be no extra point," (as Cal's touchdown by itself won the game for Cal).
I witnessed The Play. It will go down in history as the greatest football play perhaps ever,in college or pro history. Cal needs to express that point clearly in any Cal appearance on ESPN College GameDay.
