Alright I saw a great one but I don't have a Twitter link and I can't post images since I'm not premium but I'm writing it out. It's a picture of DeSantis with a 'Breaking News' header:

Cal Bears Defensive Playbook BANNED From State of Florida Ahead of FSU Matchup

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis notes it contains blitz packages and confusing pass coverage schemes that are a threat to Mike Norvell, DJ Uiagalelei, and the citizens of Florida

I think letting the rest of the college football world know that a Cal fanbase exists and is engaged is a great thing. And I think that if pride, NIL or NFL aspirations aren't sufficiently motivating for the FSU players, that an onslaught of shytpost AI memes won't move the needle.

There are different types of motivation. One of them is anger at being belittled or snubbed. Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant are prime examples of athletes who were motivated by this. While FSU players may not be all-time greats, I'd be shocked if they didn't also take the insults from Cal tweeters personally and use them as motivation for meting out punishment on the Cal team on Saturday, as a result.

While I fully admit I may be wrong (heck, I hope I'm wrong!), I suspect the FSU game has now turned into a trap game for Cal specifically because FSU has become the butt of college football media while Cal had become its latest darling. FSU will be extra motivated to prove everyone wrong and to beat the tar out of the Cal squad. Cal may end up going into the game taking the Noles too lightly, leading them to fall into an early hole from which they won't be able to emerge.

If this happens, it may well kill whatever momentum Cal's been building in changing its football culture. Instead, Cal will return to its culture of mediocrity, where winning just enough games to make it to a minor bowl is considered a good year. For those concerned about ratings and the executives in Manhattan, I'm sure you know exactly what that means.

That is 'assuming' that FSU has a playing rotation of 40 or so "MJs and Kobes" that are hyper-motivated by their opponent's social media 'irrerverence'.

Indirectly, from the greater exposure and media coverage, it's positive.

It could however be used against us when it comes to conservative-leaning or devout Christian prospects. I think that might be part of the pitch Utah is currently making right now to our top recruiting prospect, Hawaiian QB Sagapolutle.

If a kid is THAT conservative and can't understand the irony in these memes they probably wouldn't last very long in Berkeley anyway like that OL who transferred to OU due to the Covid rules. If we're aiming for highly intelligent players and their families, I'd think these memes will make them laugh and at worst, are neutral in terms of recruiting impact.

Everyone is already aware of the Berkeley/Bay Area's reputation. Most football players we recruit are not bothered or are amused by it. Maybe except for that one creationist linebacker who got offended and transferred out to some FCS school.

If a team is recruiting against us using memes, they have probably already lost. I would find that incredibly pathetic as a recruit or family member. What do I care about the memes from a handful of fans on the internet? I want to know what you can do for my son.

Football players are interested in winning, money, NFL prospects and education.

The memes are clever and fun because they play off stereotypes and tropes that aren't relevant to most students. It's like walking on Telegraph Avenue where 70 year olds in tie dye sell beads. Quaint.

There are lots of Black players whose families surely do not vote Republican who go play in ultra-conservative SEC states anyway, because those are the best programs. The politics of the region are a minor factor at best.

Football prospects tend to be more conservative and pious than the general population. in this sense a digital rebranding of Cal as the woke stronghold could become a detriment.

This times 1 Million! This is exactly why thw Calgorithm is great! People around the country are talking about Cal football for the first time in forever while acknowledging the intellectual prowess of the Cal fan base. Seriously!!! What could be better than that???

People already talk about the intellectual prowess of Cal. That's never been a problem. But wouldn't you rather people talk about Cal's football program because it was crushing opponents instead of because some self-deluded "wits" posted social media memes?

Adding extra fuel to FSU's motivation to beat Cal seems counterproductive, at a minimum. At worst, it sets Cal up for serious embarrassment.

Do the pros outweigh the cons? Is it worth helping to contribute paper cuts to Cal worth it to show off how "clever" you are on social media? If so, have at it, if not, maybe you should reconsider.

If I could so far, I'd suggest it's a way for coastal city folk to 'reclaim' their college football heritage the CFB mono-culture.

In a way 'owning' and 'perverting' the stereotypes his acting as a mini-charm offensive and helps to remove the 'elitist' or 'apathetic' label that some has placed on Cal fandom.

At least it appears that way from this frenetic month online.

That's great! Really, it is! But the posts crowning Cal as victors over FSU before the game has even been played go too far. It's one thing to lampoon Cal's perceived stereotypes, it's another to suggest FSU's already been defeated by Cal.

I can honestly tell you nobody in the FSU locker room cares about Cal tweets. They're 0-3 and being ridiculed by the national media and their entire fan base. Some tweet about the woke agenda coming for them isn't impacting their motivation.

It's not the posts about the woke agenda that will add fuel to their fire, it's the tweets about Cal whooping their arses. Yeah, their fan base has turned on them, FSU players are going to want to take that anger out on Cal. Especially as Cal tweeters keep ridiculing the Noles. Or do you think FSU players won't use that as extra motivation?

Shades of the game at Purdue in the early Gilby era (92), where their players got the impression that they were dissed as midwestern hicks, and went on to destroy a ranked Cal team.

At the very least, this twitter movement is a double-edged sword.

Or Cal under Tedford when Cal was on the verge of a #1 national ranking. Or Cal under Sonny when "Keep calm and drop 50" became a thing. We've seen this storyline play out before, why encourage a reprise?

"Or do you think FSU players won't use that as extra motivation?"

I think you are overestimating the impact of random tweets from Cal fans. FSU has plenty of motivation. Nobody cares about the tweets.

Broader note, who the **** cares if FSU is extra motivated? We're the flagship school in the largest state in the country. We are a premier academic institution in one of the most beautiful areas in America. We need to stop being scared and embrace our rightful place as the apex predator in college sports. I want FSU as motivated as possible - and then I want us to kick their ass so bad they're still talking about it a decade from now.

Some folks do better with extra motivation. That's why some employers offer bonuses. There's no reason to give an opponent extra motivation, IMHO. At the end of the day, you walk away with either a win or a loss, it doesn't matter if the other team wasn't as motivated to win. All that matters is in which column (win or loss) the
outcome is recorded.

Cal football is on the verge of building something and changing its culture. Winning is a habit; so is losing. Cal needs to develop the winning habit. Creating extra obstacles to winning isn't exactly conducive of that. Let Cal create a new winning culture first.

To the contrary - 01Bear is the only poster approaching these pernicious "jokes" with the earnest concern that they deserve. Each dense paragraph of prose submitted in defense of his thesis further convinces me that his worry over this supposed "humor" is apt. Apt!

But I say leave this inconsequential message board and put your words to use in service of the ultimate goal -- molding the words and behavior of a disparate group of sh*tposting fans, kids, and randoms into your preferred tone of caution and sobriety, lest they further shape the outcome of a future football game played by a separate group of high-level college athletes. Onward to twitter, godspeed!

Ridicule all you want, but longtime Cal fans have seen Cal go down this path before. While some don't seem to care if Cal follows the same well-worn path, I do. I don't want to see Cal as the perennial butt of college football jokes because it flops on the big stage. I want to see Cal win! Adding obstacles in its way doesn't help it to win.

100%. I think making fun of ourselves via the crazy stereotypes out there shows that we can be fun too. Add onto that the drama around the program almost being relegated last season.

01Bear, I get you.

Yes, all of us who've followed the program for long enough have the scars to show for it. Who among us hasn't felt like Charlie Brown when this program showed some spark only for the fate of Lucy to pull that football away from us such that we fall flat on our asses?

It's just natural to take any glimmer of hope with caution, extreme caution! It's natural to not do anything that could disturb the unseen forces when things are looking good. Why tempt the gods?!

That you think some inconsequential, satirical humor could somehow affect the result of the game shows just how shellshocked you are. You can't be disappointed if you always expect the worst. And you can't be shamed if you don't show any pride.

But I think you need to see it differently. While some may grow hesitant after repeated heartbreaks, others manage through that with humor. That's what you're seeing here.

And while I agree that there's a time and a place to be quiet, humble and let our play do the talking, the bigger picture is that the Cal brand needs exposure. The lack of it nearly killed the program not more than 1 year ago. It's like cheating death and feeling like you've got a new lease on life. You're apt to go a little wild.
