Florida State could not beat Memphis out of a bye week so I doubt they are as focused on beating us as much as they are on correcting their own problems that are spiraling

If Cal fans were arrogantly posting that we had the better team and were going to crush Florida State, you'd have a point. But no one here and no one in the media is seeing any of that in these Twitter posts.

You talk about the players getting inflated egos from the adulation from the media and I have no idea what you're talking about. Cal is not ranked nor partocularly close to being ranked. Florida State is 0-3 and they are FAVOERED against a 3-0 Cal team; that's bulletin board material for the Cal locker room. The only adulation from the media about Cal is for the team's fans and their memeing skills; it's not for the players.

This really feels more like PTSD from having watched Cal football for too many seasons. And this is a trap game, but not for the reasons you think. On paper, Florida State is the better team and they're playing at home in one of the tougher stadiums to play in. It's a trap game for the team because we'll get more flak for a loss than credit for a win. It's a trap game for the fans because we're feeling good about a 3-0 record and think maybe we can start beating the better teams. But there's no reason to think it's the type of trap game where a team overlooks its opponent because they think theyre the beter team (we're favored to lose) or because they're looking ahead (we have no one next week). The players will be focused on this game; Cal fans are about to learn whether it's the same old Cal football or not.

Not very helpful IMO, bad timing at the very least.
Yeah, we're losing the zeitgeist with ones like this, Point is not we are awesome and FSU should tremble before our nerdy might. We haven't won anything close to enough to starter flexing like this. Point has to be self deprecating and play into Cal stereotypes about being "woke" and "communists" for this to play.
Virtually no one takes these seriously and most understand the irony in them. Don't overthink it. It's Twitter. If you want to take that app seriously, then larger issues are at play. It's called Sh***tposting for a reason.

It's straight up trash talk, there is not much irony in your meme, it's just you telling FSU that we're going to beat them because we're smarter than them.

And yes, trash talk is taken very seriously by young players, and their coaches, who very much understand the importance of motivational tools going into an important game like this. They will definitely use any motivational edge they can get, and this is one.

If you want to do the program a service, you might want to consider taking that down until we win the game at the very least.

And even then, assuming we do win, this kind of messaging runs 180 degree counter the friendly and courteous message Sebasta and co were trying to send to the ACC fan base with their excellent billboard campaign.

Ok.

1: No program is a monolith and we can have friendly, demure back-and-forth as well as funny, slightly combative back-and-forth

2: What Cal Twitter is doing pokes as much fun at ourselves as other schools and anyone who doesn't understand that would be irrationally upset by any form of institutional support

3: If the FSU team that's 0-3 and getting clowned in by 133 out of 134 FBS programs needs this as bulletin board material then that speaks negative volumes about their current state. If they use it as motivation to beat us then credit to them but I think the other 132 programs that are trashing them played at least as big of a part

4: This has brought attention to our program and it has been overwhelmingly positive. We need eyes and attention, and what the Fantifa is doing is creating a unique fan brand that has national appeal and is resonating even with rivals. Maybe it wears out it's welcome and maybe it becomes grating when we beat their teams. But from what I'm seeing so far even Auburn fans are loving our social media presence despite their loss, and FSU fans are identifying with it as well, it's establishing an identity and people find it amusing even if you don't

5: Self-motivated athletes can find literally anything to be a slight in order to hype themselves up and it doesn't matter how benign your comments are, if someone (Kobe/Jordan) we're going to look for an insult they'll find it even if there are none

6: This FSU team has much bigger internal issues to look at than any external motivation. We're fine cracking some jokes because if their focus is on our Twitter accounts and not their own process then they're falling into exactly the trap that they should know to avoid

The burners were doing great, and it caught on nationally because it was self deprecating humor that disarms. It's clever use of ai and it was done organically. It may have already topped because too many others are trying to do it now, too, and are not doing it well. People like cal because we can laugh at ourselves. If you make a tweet, make it about laughing at ourselves. If it's not that, it's missing the mark, and comes off as cheap and petty.

This idea that players may lack motivation or have motivation because of being top 25 or in this case memes is just ridiculous. I could see it for a team that is consistently highly rated, in the playoff or won championships. But not for a bad or mediocre team.

Here is my view on motivation for the players, who want to win, and will be in the spotlight if they fail:
  • I want to win this game
  • I am playing against well coached D-1 athletes who can beat me on any play
  • I am accountable to my teammates
  • I am accountable to my coaches
  • However this play goes, I will probably see it and be held accountable in the film room by my coaches and teammates
  • There are thousand of people in this stadium watching and many more thousands watching me on this play on tv, including my friends, family and fellow students
  • I will see the outcome of this game and maybe this play analyzed in the media
  • The outcome of this game and how I play may affect my draft position
  • The outcome of this game and how I play may affect my NIL allocation
  • Reason 2031: We are rated 19 in the top 25, I think I'll slack on this one
  • Reason 4351: I can slack off--I mean what the heck did you see those memes!!!! (Or the opposite for FSU: I need to play harder because did you see those insulting Cal memes?)

I remember hearing 49er Brent Jones talking about emotional motivations. He said they last no longer than the first couple of plays. After that, its smash mouth, play to play, just to survive, doing what you practiced and doing your damn job.

Suggesting that players will have less motivation if they are rated or have funny memes is insulting to the players and the coaches who are paid to motivate them. The team will win or lose because it is better or worse, and that includes coaching and motivation, but it won't depend on memes.

Just my humble opinion.

The coverage of Cal Twitter and the Calgorithm has really surprised me. A number of different podcasts and media entities are talking about it like Steward Mandel, Nicole Auerbach and the Sickos Committee. It's funny because sickos thinks it's blown up too much and has now become mainstream. The whole meme-ing of this and the viral nature of social media has done a ton of marketing for the program.

This is why I was very high on the Bear's chances to win a lot of games this year, even before the season. The top of the ACC is very good but thin - but after the top 2-3, they are all teams we should beat.
