Wonder what time the games were played in week 6. Perhaps Cal had the biggest TV audientce for a night game, with a handicap. After all our game didn't start till 7:30 WEST COAST TIME!!!

If we had any real marketing efforts in the athletic department, this could be leveraged not jsut for football, but for Cal sports as a whole. It's such low-hanging fruit to market to the entire East Bay......Cal is here to stay, an East Bay original, family friendly sports entertainment, etc.

We've been given a gift that we should be able to leverage. I think we can build upon the relationship with BART's marketing department.

let's not sqaunder this opportunity to re-position the brand of Cal sports and to some extent the entire University.

Playing close games against top 10 teams is a recipe for viewership. Gee I wonder why didn't anyone else think of that?

hard to believe that many people stayed tuned to the Mizzou game for the whole game. Maybe at the start it had 3M - but not for the 4th Quarter.

Just from the overall ratings, ESPN has to be pretty happy with the addition of Cal and Stanford into the ACC. Both have done quite well in viewership.

Absolutely. And points out that our poor numbers in the past were due to 1) the PAC-12 Network being so crappy and viewership counting as zero and 2) Cal being relegated to the PAC-12 Network for being a boring, low scoring, losing team.

Cal - Miami's ratings outdrew FSU - Clemson by about 500k. Which would be great for the calgorithm to bring up.

Projecting forward, I can see Cal getting several more national broadcasts (aka not on the ACC network)

Cal - Pittsburgh - ESPN (confirmed)
Cal - NC state - ACC network (confirmed)
Cal - Oregon State - ESPN late night window (speculation)
Cal - Wake Forest - ACC network (confirmed)
Cal - Syracuse - ESPN (speculation)
Cal - Stanford - ESPN late night window (speculation)
Cal - SMU - ESPN (speculation - the Thanksgiving weekend games get spread out so there are more TV windows and SMU is currently ranked).

When we joined the ACC, I figured Cal and Stanford could beat at least half of the existing ACC teams in football viewership, without the P12 Network dragging them down. That's basically happening so far.

Ironically, most people on the east coast watched us dominate and went to sleep before the 4th quarter meltdown, which happened well past 2am EST.

Josh Pate said he absolutely loved gameday @ cal, and lamented not playing up the Auburn game more. He was a big fan of the woke vs coke thing lol

The weekend was still a big success, despite the faceplant. Honestly it'd be hard to get relegated right now i think, we've got a lot of cred across cfb fanbases

Right now, Cal has had 4 games with ratings information made publicly available. There is no information on the UC Davis game. Combined they equal 4.86 million viewers, which would work out to 1.22 million if you divide by four (and exclude UC davis) or 997k if you include UC Davis as a zero.

Oddly enough the Florida State game has the worst ratings so far this season. But Cal also had it's three most high profile opponents (Auburn, Miami and FSU), meaning the ratings will probably diminish from here on out.

According to these numbers taken from 2015 - 2019 would place Cal's current ratings would place them 35th or 38th. Not a blueblood, but not bad either.

Though the 1.9 M with Miami would beat all other games this year by a wide margin. (Our own game against SDSU was only 900k ish in the same window). Most other games are usually around 900k to 1M at the 7:30pm ESPN window this year.

1.9 is great. If ESPN gets about 2M every saturday night they are happy

Shouldn't the number of viewers be adjusted fo the number of likely viewers in each time zone. For example, the Cal game started at 10:30 eastern time. But, in this regard, if someone watches the game for just one minute in the easterm time zone does that count as much as someone who watches the whole game Pacific time. Or is the measurement gross eyeballs that watched the game for at least one minute across all time zone? Other time measurements are possible.

Actually I'm wrong about that! There was a Stanford-USC game on Fox that night at the same time, and the Cal game actually beat it out in the ratings!

I looked at this season (so far) and last season and counted up the games that started on Saturday at 7pm PT / 10pm ET or later. There are 39 total (unless I missed one), not counting games that received no rating (Pac-12 Network and CBS Sports Network are not Nielsen rated). Here are your top ten (with Cal actually pretty well represented!):

1. CSU-Colorado 9/16/23 ESPN 9,300,000
2. USC-Oregon 11/11/23 FOX 3,010,000
3. Oregon St.-Colorado 11/4/23 ESPN 2,770,000
4. USC-ASU 9/23/23 FOX 2,630,000
5. Arizona-USC 10/7/23 ESPN 2,550,000
6. Auburn-Cal 9/9/23 ESPN 2,230,000
7. Miami-Cal 10/5/24 ESPN 1,920,000
8. Stanford-USC 9/9/23 FOX 1,750,000

That Colorado game is just a crazy outlier. The Coach Prime craze was at full blast.

To futrther explain, a game starting at 10:30 east coast time, like the Cal - Miami game did, wipes out a lot of east coast viewers. Wonder what time is used to determine the number of viewers,
