Quote from Pete Carrol:

"It's a terrific time to be here. It's a perfect time for the Pac-10 Conference to showcase a couple of teams that are playing well. We will continue to have these kinds of match ups, but this is awesome for us. Cal is playing great football right now. We have two top ten teams playing in the Coliseum with a giant crowd there. There is a really fun build up to this game. With what happened last year, it adds to it all. It brings more excitement. I think there is a chance for us to make this a Northern California vs. Southern California situation. This Cal team is well equipped. They have guys in all the right spots. They have big playmakers and an excellent quarterback that is playing lights-out football. The defense is playing solid. They have a tremendous amount of confidence. They will bring us a great day's of work. We are looking forward to the match up and hope that we can playing well and get what we want to get done."

The 2004 team had a Rose Bowl stolen from them. That said, the 2004 team's close loss to an SC team that was stacked with future NFL players is the highest quality football game I have ever had the pleasure to attend.

Go 2004 Bears!

My favorite Cal team of all time. I will always love the 2004 team. So good offensively and defensively. Taking USC to the brink proved how good this team was. I will never forget the memories they have given me. I still say to this day, should've gone to the Rose Bowl in 04, but thats another story.

Thank you 2004 Bears you will be remembered fondly in my heart forever

Our offense and defense were better than USC's including that day. Aaron Rodgers broke the NCAA record for consecutive completions, not against an FCS team, but against the eventual National Champion with the best defense in the country on their home field. We lost that day due to special teams. Even still, we had a chance to win at the end. If we do, we go undefeated and are likely National Champions.

Why is the video quality so sh*tty?

I think I know the answer. Probably because of videotape or digital video?

When you use film, as NFL Films did, you're able to remaster for generations.

One muffed punt, pulled hamstring, and a slip in the end zone away from the National Championship. I was at the game and it was electric. The SC fans were talking smack the whole time, but you could feel they were nervous. We dominated the game statistically and I think the Trojans knew they got lucky. I kept hearing people wondering, "Who is this QB from Cal?"

Who had the pulled hamstring? What I remember as a big difference was losing Chase Lyman to an ACL injury early in the game. McArthur had a huge game, Makonnen was good, but Lyman was a difference maker in prior games. He was averaging close to 30 yards per catch. He was a major reason why the game was lost. Most "fun" loss I ever attended.

Yeah, I remember chatting with a USC fan who could typically be pretty arrogant about his team (you don't say?), but after that game he was like, "Damn, that's the best Cal team I've ever seen."

Can't wait to be there! There's going to be 85+ guys from our team in attendance. Sucks about the weather, but nothing we can do about that.

We fumbled a punt leading to an SC score, Reggie Bush scored a TD on a punt return and we missed an easy field goal on the penultimate drive that would have let us kick a FG to win on the final drive.

Despite being there, I'd forgotten it all except for the Bush return. It's such classic Cal football. Always finding a way to blow it when we get our chance on the biggest stage.

I found this on wikipedia hahahah, read the coaching section I am copy/pasting. Tosh showing up? heh

Playing career

As a player, Lupoi was a defensive lineman for Cal from 2000-05. He led the Bears' defensive line in tackles in 2003 and earned Pac-10 All-Academic recognition in 2005.
Coaching career

University of California, Berkeley

In 2008, Lupoi was hired as a defensive line coach at his alma mater, University of California, Berkeley. During his time as a Cal coach, Lupoi developed a reputation as an elite recruiter. In 2010, Lupoi was suspended for his role in instructing nose tackle Aaron Tipoti to fake an injury in a game against Oregon to try to slow down Oregon's fast, up-tempo offense. He left Cal amid controversy after he acted in bad faith by using his position as a Cal recruiter to convince elite recruits to commit to the University of Washington where he intended to become a coach.

Wilcox was the LB coach for that 2004 team. He was also the DC at UW who hired Lupois as his DL coach and, according to the Thompson family, was the biggest factor in flipping Shaq from Cal to UW where he played in Wilcox's defense with Peter Sirmon as his position coach.

What were the Top 5 moments of the 2004 season?

1. Losing to USC.
2. That amazing 18-hour feeling that Cal was finally going to the Rose Bowl.
3. Beating a 5-6 Oregon team by 1 point.
4. Destroying a 4-7 Stanford team.
5. Shutting out a ranked 9-3 Arizona State team.

That USC game. We sat in the endzone where we were originally just yards away to win. A tragic slip in the endzone and AR had the ball in the exact right spot. Pete was on the money with the Trojans when he told them to "have fun" down that close to losing and they did. Later I heard my most staunch USC friends were literally pissing themselves we were so good. At halftime I asked a fellow friend, "Has Aaron had an incomplete pass yet?" I think he ended up tying the NCAA record at 22 straight. Yes, the 2003 and 2004 teams are the reason I am still a Bear football fan. Some think that magically the JT years may re-emerge, but even then the other teams were "catching up" and the magic ended for good. Congrats to those who make the game and who knows, it might make a difference against Furd on Saturday! JT should be there!
Bring back bottled beer and cigars at CMS. Should get us back in the Rose Bowl!

Back-to-back shutouts of the Arizona schools, in fact.

Honestly, none of those blowout wins ever got old. It was just great seeing Cal football so thoroughly dominate opponents, for the first time in my living memory.

Most electric college football atmosphere I've ever experienced. At least two fights near me in the stands. The Coliseum really was that on that day

I get it.

On paper, it doesn't look that amazing. It's just funny to me that the most memorable moment and it is justifiably a memorable moment was a loss.

But I do remember the tough times and that Cal football beat reporter at the Daily Cal who never witnessed a Cal victory.
