Eh, I don't think so. They're saying tOSU is going to drop all the way out. Only way SMU gets in is if they win.

SMU would be a 2-loss team going against a bunch of 3-loss teams for one of the last spots. They could totally still get in with a loss.

Heck, even Miami can't be ruled out here.
The only way Miami would get in is if the committee decided to right the wrong of last year in excluding Florida State from the CFP. But I doubt that. For SMU - not a chance.

Eh, we will see, The thing is that the SEC teams do not have impressive resumes either, after the top three. It will be close.

Yeah, Ohio State is probably still in the playoff, just at a lower seed.

Well the LA bowl will have to wait until next week.

If ASU doesn't beat Iowa state, then it's nervous time.

Sure, we had higher hopes than the LA bowl this year, I get it. But if it's armed forces or first responders, there will be absolutely zero excitement for that game.

At this point, it makes no difference to me. I can't justify spending money to see another mediocre 6-6 Wilcox coached team. I'll stay home and watch the game on TV until we fall hopelessly behind.

They will be in. Also, Oregon and Penn State are both in, no matter which of them wins next week. Same for Texas and Georgia. Notre Dame, Indiana, and Tennessee are also in. And there are three more places reserved for conference champs, that will be the SMU-Clemson winner, the ASU-ISU winner, and Boise (unless they lose to UNLV).

That leaves one more place. I doubt Miami gets that last spot. It will probably go to either South Carolina or Alabama.

I would be very surprised if SMU gets in with a loss. If SMU loses, the last team in will be Alabama or South Carolina, and Bama has the edge there because of the name brand and the head to head win.

The comparison would be:

Alabama 9-3 with wins over two ranked teams, Georgia and South Carolina.
South Carolina 9-3 with wins over three ranked teams, Clemson, Missouri, and Texas A&M.
SMU 11-2 with no wins over ranked teams. Best wins are over unranked 9-3 Duke and 8-4 Louisville.

They're not going to punish a team for going 11-1 in the regular season and losing the CCG to send a 3 loss team that didn't even qualify for their CCG.

And had losses to Oklahoma and Vandy?

They will absolutely not set the precedent that a team that is in the playoff prior to the CCGs, which loses, will then be dropped out for a team that didn't even make their CCG. If Clemson loses, there's nothing to penalize, they aren't in right now.

For all the talk they the CFB committee will only use the CCG's as a bonus to help a team's resume, but not punish a loss, we might just see whether that's true if it's ACC vs SEC.

I know this won't be received well but a team that finished .500, with a losing conference record, and which did not beat a single team with a winning record does not belong in a bowl game.

Of course, the extra practice time is helpful . . ., or is it? After all, it is more practice time with this coaching staff.

lol. You've just described the process through which the vast majority of the SEC has qualified for bowl games over the last 20 years.

The players absolutely deserve this recognition. They've worked hard and sacrifice more than you can know. Traveling across country to the south three times and winning 2/3 of those games is an accomplishment. If it doesn't meet with your personal standards, you're free not to watch.

For all the pain and suffering, this season did have several incredible moments. The Auburn win, despite turning out to be a bit of early season fool's gold, felt pretty epic at the time. Auburn thought they'd run Cal out of the stadium, and yet Cal was clicking on all cylinders early and turned Payton Thorne into an interception machine. The excitement of College Gameday lived up to all the hype and then some, and then for most of 3 quarters on that very warm October night, Cal looked like world-beaters against Miami. The comeback to beat Stanford, "98 yards with my boys," and Mendoza's emotional post-game interview -- that was a joy to be there and witness all the Big Game festivities in that glorious old bowl that we love so much.

Players absolutely deserve to go bowling. The level of commitment these guys put into being college athletes is incredible. These guys laid it all out there for all of us fans to watch and enjoy all Fall. I'm frustrated with the 6-6 mark, but the players shouldn't suffer just because Wilcox gets conservative and coaches not to lose.

If the LA Bowl were to chose USC (6-6) over Cal (6-6), which seems entirely plausible, what would that mean for Cal's landing spot? Sun Bowl? Vegas Bowl?

Cal has 2 problems, first...we play a team too good and it will be a national undressing. If the bowl is further than LA or Vegas we'll see an empty stadium. I hate being a debbie downer, I'll stop now lol.

Actually one more thing...is anybody else totally not even excited to see a team play a bowl with potentially a lot of players transferring out before the game or going to the nfl? That stuff just kills bowl games to me that I rarely watch anymore.

Of course, I will be there or (if it's too far) watch. At one time, a winning record (not including FCS teams) was required. I think lowering standards cheapens the product. Recently, California lowered the requirements for passing the Bar Exam. I think it was a bad idea, but I'm not boycotting the profession.

You are talking about a change from 18 years ago. This has been the rule for a long time now. Cal isn't undeserving any more than the hundred or so 6-6 teams that qualified for bowls over the past two decades.

Anyway, I'm excited to see the team play one more game. Excited to check out SoFi. And excited our players get a final acknowledgement for all their hard work. Did I wish we'd won more games? Of course. That's always true. But none of that means Cal doesn't "belong" or I won't eagerly watch them play one last time.

My comment was not directed at Cal or its players but was a general statement about the current state of bowl games, which likely will die out within the decade as the more lucrative playoff system is expanded.

Yes. As bowl games have been overblown and inflated, the boys still see the history in them and also just want to go a few more weeks with their teammates (some of whom, agree, may be leaving). Let them have their game even if it's a cheap goodie bag and called the Bell Helicopter Fertilizer Cheetos Pop-Tart Bowl. Why do you care how they finish off their hard-worked season and/or career?? If you agree that Wilcox and Co ___the bed during the season, why not let the boys have a bit of Holiday fun? I'll be there and haven't missed one since JT took over. Yeah, I get that. But, honestly, this is what is leading a race to the bottom and, if you think about it, a race to the top. They're putting all these pointless bowl games out there for the 6-6 also-rans. The ones that don't have a legit chance to a NY6 bowl game. And alot of these games - no money is made for the school.

We can certainly talk about a "reward" for the kids. Sure. But what about the 5-7 team that lost two games by 7 points combined. Shouldn't they get a reward? This is that grey zone of "participation trophy". In my opinion, no 6-6 team should earn a bowl game.

And the other new consideration is NIL and the portal. If I'm Jayden Ott or Cade Uluave - I'm not playing this bowl game.
