This is why I get less and less excited about "commitments", be they silent or verbal. Until they are binding, it doesn't mean jack squat. Witness the Hawaii QB. In fact, with the new portal/transfer rules, even signing something doesn't mean that much anymore.

Gone are the days when you could safely imagine a recruit's 4-5 year career arc as a Golden Bear.

Getting recruits is just as important as ever, but less fun to follow.

The only real reasons for a silent commitment are because they're checking the academics and/or transfer credits to see if you're actually admitted, or they need information on health/injuries. Obviously nothing set in stone but there are currently 3 players with crystal ball picks to us:

Lajuan Owens - OT from New Mexico, transfer

Dallas Afalava - DT/SDE from Idaho, transfer

Justin Hasenheutl - OL from Georgia, High School

So if you're looking at possible "silent commits" it's a good bet that at least one of those guys would be included

The best portal OL recruit I can recall was Barrett Miller in 2023. He was a guard at Stanford, but played LT at Cal and did a pretty good job. The other portal recruits on the OL have been pretty mediocre, and frequent penalty generators.

As far as HS OL recruits, I think the jury is out on Nick Morrow. He may have put on 50 lbs, but he still looks overmatched at times. I've wondered whether they would have been better off leaving him at his natural weight of 250 lbs and turning him into a linebacker. Remember Ted "Mad Stork" Hendricks for the Raiders? Morrow might have become that kind of guy.

owens spent his 1st collegiate season at tulane redshirting before starting at the critical qb's blindside left tackle in albuquerque last season for arguably the most productive offensive line in college football, he got 3 years of remaining eligibility...no more of that la bowl bull**** when the bears can't punch it in from a yard out for a touchdown, bruce snyder & jeff tedford would 100% approve of this recruitment

I might posit that what you 'really' have "not" been "impressed with" have been our "OL coaches". Coaching matters.

Also everyone wants portal lineman so the supply is way less than the demand.

I agree every year there's thousands of players in the portal, 100 teams can upgrade at QB but OL takes 5 competent starters and the number of good OL in the portal pales in comparison to other positions. That makes the good OL in the portal even more expensive in NIL terms for these other teams and suddenly all the reasonably funded NIL programs are overmatched. At other positions a top player can be realistically obtained but grabbing 4-5 OL who are good-to-great would take up most of a teams operating budget if they have a robust program and more than the large majority teams will have overall

Tristan Dunn, former 4* DB out of Washington (went to UW) crystal balled to Cal. Not yet rated as a transfer. Has defensive versatility in the box and as a safety

JC OL may be the answer if there are any
