Once again this is an absolute credit to the recruiting staff. Have to give a particular shout out to Marshall Cherrington. You cannot overstate how difficult it can be to bring talent like this to a place like Cal. Our academic standards together with our unique administrative and other "challenges" can make recruiting seem like trying to push a 50 ton boulder up a hill . . . on roller-skates. It's almost superhuman.

And to have our own bizarre dysfunction blow up landing a recruit like this at the midnight hour, a recruit they had worked on for years, and still have the intestinal fortitude to stay positive and stay with it . . . Just wow. Simply amazing stuff

And this is why you don't go scorched earth and trash guys when they flu like Ott and JKS. Thank you to everyone who kept the faith and believed and thank you to Sebasta and the NIL collective as well as everyone who ponied up their hard-earned money (and hell, everyone who ponied up some easy-earned money too).

Obviously it's easy to be optimistic and starry-eyes before guys ever hit the field to prove themselves but I truly believe JKS will go down as the best Cal QB of all time (best pro will be tough to outdo Rodgers and his MVPs). I've watched his games, complete games not highlights, and he has some of the best arm talent I've ever seen in a prospect; the ball goes exactly where he wants it every time it leaves his hand.

Good thing they already had the signing post ready and waiting from the first go round and didn't have to start from scratch

Actually posted the question on 12/30/2024 if he could enter in portal in the spring and end up back at Cal. Guess I was off by a couple of months.

Also, funny and meaningless but we're going to hear people cite next year that we haven't landed a 4*+ HS QB in 10 years because technically JKS was technically an early enrollee and college transfer. I don't care, they can say whatever they want because we got our guy

JKS also sited his strong relationships with coaches Wilcox, Bloesch, and Gilbert as reasons for choosing Cal. Thank you to them as well.

On3: Oregon QB transfer Jaron Keawe-Sagapolutele commits to Cal

Quote:

Despite enrolling and participating in practices with the Ducks ahead of the Rose Bowl Game on Jan. 1, Sagapolutele confirmed reports that he planned to enter the portal just a few days later.
Quote:

It did not take him long to find his next destination with the Golden Bears, who were the program he was committed to before flipping to Oregon on National Signing Day. Sagapolutele told reporters that he had a change of heart after seeing that he wouldn't have the chance to start during his freshman season with the Ducks.
Quote:

Because of his quick decision to transfer, he will be classified as a 'Short-Term Signee.' Those prospects will be removed from the recruiting class of the school they initially signed and enrolled with, and will now be counted as part of their new program's recruiting class instead of its transfer portal haul.

I don't know who Matt Bruening of Campus 2 Canton is, but he posted a pair of podcasts on this subject, one yesterday that speculated on JKS coming to Cal, and one about an hour ago reacting to the announcement.

The staff, especially coach Wilcox, gets eviscerated for everything that goes wrong, so I thought it's important to give them credit when credit is truly due. This is a BIG get for us, and could be the kind of win that can alter the trajectory of our program for the next several years.

Meanwhile . . . Jaden Rashada, the guy we wanted a couple years ago: was committed to Miami, was committed to Florida, committed and signed with ASU, transferred from ASU to Georgia, sued the Florida booster club, and is now in the transfer portal agains. I think Justyn Martin is transferring too (his second time?). Sometimes you get lucky and dodge accidental bullets, it takes wading through some frogs before you find a prince I guess

Hey I am Happy that Cal got this kid back but anyone talking about this kid being the best Cal QB of all time is out of their minds. The Best Cal Quarterback of all time is Steve Bartkowski and no one is going to change that fact in the near or distant future. People forget about Craig Morton, Joe Roth, Gale Gilbert etc. The kid has a long way to go before he can even be considered a Great at Cal.

Statistically, that's not remotely true. Factoring in different eras and other intangibles makes Bartkowski at least a part of the conversation.

I have a slightly different take. I think Martin and/or Rashada would have had better development pathways had they come to Cal. Rashada's situation is a cautionary tail about the grass not always being greener (and perhaps getting really bad advice).

I definitely think they could have had different careers and Rashada especially just seems to be following some terrible advice from his pops and an agent that his pops chose for him. By all accounts Rashada is a good kid and has been really well liked by teammates but his pops kept negotiating and asking for more from Miami until Miami finally said no. Then they took an offer from Florida that, by some accounts, wasn't real, but others have said that it was revoked because they asked Florida's NIL to pay damages for reneging on the Miami offer instead of paying out of their end and Florida refused. Regardless, Florida's NIL was really sleezily run and they had to cut out some of the bad actors. Then Jaden went to ASU and his pops kept tweeting cryptic/negative things about them, Jaden got hurt and transferred out after the year to UGA. The UGA job seemed winnable for next year but Stockton seems like he has it fairly well locked up so he hit the portal again.

Long story but if Jaden had just stuck with a program and developed his game he'd probably be starting right now or at least in line to start next year. He has a monster arm but he needed to be working on his mechanics and overall accuracy and timing while growing in one system. Instead he's onto his 3rd school, hasn't been growing as a player so he's now underdeveloped, and he has no coaching staff with sweat equity and time investment built up with him. It's really sad tbh, his pops just tried to use him for a short term payout instead of investing in his future and potential generational wealth down the road

Helicopter pops trying every tactic to [greedily] leverage the max in his son's NIL opportunities as opposed to prioritizing his son's development and his potential NFL opportunities. Pretty self serving if you ask me. You got 'Big Dave', and then you have 'Other Dave' (Papa Rashada).

Yeah, I'm guessing you never saw Steve Bartkowski play. I'm not taking a shot. This is my guess. Forget your statistics. I know what I saw.

Trying to compare statistics from the 70's to what the game is today is like trying to compare apples to an Edsel.

I promise you. If you could have seen Bartkowski when he played at Cal you would have crapped your pants.

Morton, Bartkowski, Roth, Rodgers, Goff and a lot of other real good ones! It's hard to say who was the very best. Aaron had one great year and left, but actually Bart only had one great year too. Once he decided on football over baseball he was terrific. Roth ran the best Cal offense I've ever seen to perfection. Hey, I'd take any of these guys. I'm also thrilled to have Jaron join the Bears. We can only hope that one day he will be added to the "great" list. Welcome, Jaron.

You are correct concerning Roth. I should have mentioned him.

I have a hard time with Goff because of the 3 ring circus of an offense he ran at Cal. I will admit that's a blind spot for me.

I do respect Goff. He has turned into a solid pro. I would love to meet him so I could ask him if he would be willing to ask his Dad Jerry for a signed baseball on my behalf.

1.6% of college players go pro. He should be maximizing his son's college pay because there is a very strong chance he wont make the NFL. It does a disservice to the kid to plan on him making it to the NFL. It's just a bad bet.

He (the Bambino) absolutely was. I also grew up going to Candlestick to watch mays. And once caught a Hank Aaron HR ball hit halfway up into the LF stands at Candlestick (which, if you've ever been there for a baseball game, you know how monstrous of a poke that was because the 1st row of the LF bleachers were some 30 ft beyond the LF chain-link fence to even get TO the bleachers). Anyway I was only trying to say that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Babe was absolutely great. In my mind Willie was greater. Same with Bartkowski. It is an unwinnable debate.
