Once again this is an absolute credit to the recruiting staff. Have to give a particular shout out to Marshall Cherrington. You cannot overstate how difficult it can be to bring talent like this to a place like Cal. Our academic standards together with our unique administrative and other "challenges" can make recruiting seem like trying to push a 50 ton boulder up a hill . . . on roller-skates. It's almost superhuman.
And to have our own bizarre dysfunction blow up landing a recruit like this at the midnight hour, a recruit they had worked on for years, and still have the intestinal fortitude to stay positive and stay with it . . . Just wow. Simply amazing stuff
You, you, you mean Wilcox and Bloesch did something good??? Impossible.BearForceOne said:
JKS also sited his strong relationships with coaches Wilcox, Bloesch, and Gilbert as reasons for choosing Cal. Thank you to them as well.
Quote:
Despite enrolling and participating in practices with the Ducks ahead of the Rose Bowl Game on Jan. 1, Sagapolutele confirmed reports that he planned to enter the portal just a few days later.
Quote:
It did not take him long to find his next destination with the Golden Bears, who were the program he was committed to before flipping to Oregon on National Signing Day. Sagapolutele told reporters that he had a change of heart after seeing that he wouldn't have the chance to start during his freshman season with the Ducks.
Quote:
Because of his quick decision to transfer, he will be classified as a 'Short-Term Signee.' Those prospects will be removed from the recruiting class of the school they initially signed and enrolled with, and will now be counted as part of their new program's recruiting class instead of its transfer portal haul.

Statistically, that's not remotely true. Factoring in different eras and other intangibles makes Bartkowski at least a part of the conversation.SWarren958 said:
Hey I am Happy that Cal got this kid back but anyone talking about this kid being the best Cal QB of all time is out of their minds. The Best Cal Quarterback of all time is Steve Bartkowski and no one is going to change that fact in the near or distant future. People forget about Craig Morton, Joe Roth, Gale Gilbert etc. The kid has a long way to go before he can even be considered a Great at Cal.
I have a slightly different take. I think Martin and/or Rashada would have had better development pathways had they come to Cal. Rashada's situation is a cautionary tail about the grass not always being greener (and perhaps getting really bad advice).Bearly Clad said:
Meanwhile . . . Jaden Rashada, the guy we wanted a couple years ago: was committed to Miami, was committed to Florida, committed and signed with ASU, transferred from ASU to Georgia, sued the Florida booster club, and is now in the transfer portal agains. I think Justyn Martin is transferring too (his second time?). Sometimes you get lucky and dodge accidental bullets, it takes wading through some frogs before you find a prince I guess
Another reason why you should just wish kids the best regardless of a really tough decision because you never know what could change and keeping a positive relationship is important.

Yeah, I'm guessing you never saw Steve Bartkowski play. I'm not taking a shot. This is my guess. Forget your statistics. I know what I saw.MoragaBear said:Statistically, that's not remotely true. Trying to compare statistics from the 70's to what the game is today is like trying to compare apples to an Edsel.
I promise you. If you could have seen Bartkowski when he played at Cal you would have crapped your pants.

I bet the Babe Ruth die hards said the same things when discussing Mays and Aaron and Griffey and Bonds. And now, Ohtani.

If I recall correctly the Bambino was pretty doggone good.
I was very lucky to grow up watching the great Willie Mays!

You are correct concerning Roth. I should have mentioned him.Pittstop said:SWarren958 said:

Maybe. But you don't know. Unless you have a crystal ball. And you ignore Roth & Goff altogether.

Helicopter pops trying every tactic to [greedily] leverage the max in his son's NIL opportunities as opposed to prioritizing his son's development and his potential NFL opportunities. Pretty self serving if you ask me. You got 'Big Dave', and then you have 'Other Dave' (Papa Rashada).

Ruth AND ohtani are the best to ever play the game. And I hate the dodgers.
