Why was Oklahoma transfer RB Jaydn Ott listed 3rd on the depth chart?

Ott's banged up with a shoulder injury. Why risk further injury against Illinois State?

That's not what the coach said as the reason. neither was it the reason the article gives. Both praise how great the other two look.

Ott sure seems to be injury prone. That's really going to limit his opportunities going forward.

"In terms of where the depth chart came out today, we had Jovantae Barnes and (Tory) Blaylock one and two and they deserved that," Nagy said on Monday night on The Huddle at Rudy's Country Store and Bar-B-Q, "because not only did Jaydn miss a lot of time during fall camp, so did the rest of the room. We went two weeks plus with Barnes and Blaylock as the only two running backs carrying the ball."

In fact, that's exactly what he said, Barnes and Blaylock stayed healthy and thus they are at the top of the depth chart

Let me say first off, I have no knowledge of why Ott left CAL but I'll say from a football and legacy perspective, Jayden should have stayed here at CAL. He would have been all over the rushing record books and clearly the #1back here. He could had his name in the same conversation as Muncie, Best and Lynch as Cal running back royalty!

Maybe our coaching staff knew something we all didn't?
Like he was nursing another undisclosed injury?
And that's why efforts to retain him weren't as strong as people here expected?
Would be a sad tale for him if his RB days are already over.
Pure speculation on my part. Ultimately, I wish him well.

For those curious and who care enough to be a subscriber, all of the information as to why and how Ott left is shared and discussed on the Bear Insider board.

You're saying all the proprietary and/or confidential information about Ott's negotiations, injury and health status and everything else about him leaving were readily available on the that board? So if I ONLY subscribed to the paid board, I'd have as much inside information as Ott?

Wow, that's SOME board!

C'mon, no need to be snarky. I shouldn't have used the word "all" and clearly meant to imply the relevant information as we understand it (which is a lot).

The entire RB room left, as did most of our WRs and our starting TE, but people are focusing their hate on Ott, who showed us loyalty after leading the conference in rushing in 2023 and left with a Cal degree.

Agree. I am disappointed that Ott decided to leave, but he was a great Bear when he was with us, and I enjoyed cheering for him.
I hope he can overcome his injuries and get a chance to show what he can do.

Also, Russell White.

He is somewhere in the next grouping with guys like Chapman and Arrington and Vereen. He is very good, but stats also come from opportunity. Lynch, Best, White, Chapman, Arrington and Vereen all shared time with very high level teammates who shared the load. I don't know that Jet is really in the conversation with those guys, but even if so, that was only 1 of the 3 years.

Ott made more $ than any of them, well most of them, while at Berkeley, so by the standards of today, he was better.

In watching old highlights, what stands out about both Forsett and Vereen was their ability to make something out of absolutely nothing. Probably explains why they enjoyed relatively productive NFL careers. By contrast, Arrington was a great downhill back, but he had the luxury of holes the width of I-80. Ott didn't show Forsett's and Vereen's ability to escape from prison last year, for whatever reason--may have been the "lower body" injury--but IMO, it remains to be seen how his skills will translate to another program or to the next level.

Absolutely nobody cares about any of that. Or at least if they do it is so far down the list that it barely factors in. He wants a career in football at the highest level. He made the decision based on where he thought he'd maximize the chances of getting that. We'll see if he is correct. But he didn't factor in whether a bunch of 70+ year olds from one school think he deserves to be talked about in the same breath as Chuck Muncie - a guy he almost assuredly has never heard of.

Chuck Muncie was my first football hero and in my mind none of the others people list come close to him. But...I'm old.

Or Russell White or Forsett or Arrington, or [possibly] Igber. Maybe a slight tier above Isi Sofele.

Yeah, Vereen especially could be very shifty in tight spaces and had more power than Ott. He was also more dangerous as a receiver, though part of that just might be the offense we were running.

Given his receiving prowess in the NFL, I don't think it was the offense we were running.

Vereen was pretty awesome. And if I think about it, he and Ott are pretty similar, except Shane never had major injury issues (at Cal). Similar speed, similar power (03 Ott made a living moving piles he shouldn't have), similar running style

First stud Running back I ever saw live for any team, was sadly probably like ...Tommy Vardell. That guy was an absolute beast and I remember watching him rag dolling our team during one of the big games lol. We have never had a running back like that (Lynch was a sliver of Vardell but in college he was actually pretty trim down and pacey.) I miss so much teams lining up in the I formation with a beast fullback and tough tailback and saying "I dare you to stop me". The 1 on 1s with the fullback and Mike backer were always legendary. I'd like to see a team break the mold and return to that before I die lol.

I'll see your Vardell and raise you a Muncie. The Stanford DB's played Ole and No Mas when Chuck turned the corner in the '75 Big Game

I'm very glad that Ott chose OU and a final paycheck from them. Good for him!

If he stayed at Cal, we'd have burned good money on a once phenom who had became a skittish RB due to those very injuries and poor OL play. I grew tired of seeing him wait, then hit a hole for no gain or a loss. Wilcox's loyalty to a fault would have led to Ott being listed as our #1 RB despite last year.

This way, the team is free to demand a different style of running. I'm impressed by our new set of hard-nosed runners and really hope this OL pulls it together.
Roll on you Bears!

Not sure if you knew this but being the "#1 back", "rushing records", "comparisons to Chuck Muncie, Best and Lynch as Cal royalty" - but that means absolute d.i.c.k. nowadays. And that goes for any college football program, not just ours. Its about securing financial terms in csse the NFL doesn't work out. No college player is going to care about holding the passing record for a school in a season. If he's 2nd on the chart, earning $500k for the season - its a win.
