Lmao, Minn is gonna stomp this team. Cade or no.
Cal has ALWAYS played to the opponent under Wilcox. Always plays down to garbage teams, always plays up to good teams.
Cal might lose, but it's pretty rare for a Wilcox team to get stomped. They lost 30 games last year by a combined 1 point.
He hasn't a team this devoid of talent.
This has been said every season since like 2012.
A couple good players but otherwise no talent has been said consistently for a generation.

Were we watching the same WR group last year?? Other than Hunter did anyone who leave really dominated at all

Refreshing to see no more running up the middle every first down, even with a big lead. Harsin and Rolo are making a difference.

In 1 game played.
Who are the Cal WRs this year that are better?

You told me they were producing but Brady has 2 games so far with 3 catches facing fluff opponent that he should be whipping?

Hunter and Endries are absolutely missed but the Cal WR room was not too impressive and they played with a fringe NFL Draft pick QB in Mendoza

At what game do you seem Wilcox getting fired? If we lose the next 3 (Including today) I would say he's gone.
And yes, JKS is gone too, unless we get a QB miracle working Head coach of a hire as soon as the season was over.
The sad thing is when Wilcox gets canned, in todays college football, it's essentially like your program is in a death penalty. It's starting from 0 again.
Is it? I would think the opposite. Literally can build any team you want the first year.
I guess but typically building a team takes a few years. Unless you're an SEC team or getting 100m from the B1G. Imagine how insane this sounds.. ...we're talking about college football.
false. look at SMU. i know they lost today but we will trade their last season for any of our season in the last 35 years
SMU has a lot of money behind it.
Cal isn't broke. Also, anyone who thinks we can't build a team, but can keep the team we have is ignorant of how college football works now.
College football is less about long tail team building than any sport outside of MLB, maybe.
IMO Jonathan Brady is the guy we miss most with JKS. He's not the best of them and losing Nyziah after his freshman year (local guy?) hurts the most but Brady seemed like almost all his catches were contested. That's the kind of guy we need, may not make the most separation but he catches it when it's put on him. That's what JKS does. We don't necessarily need perfect WRs a la Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase, burners are great but generally make some plays and miss some, the size guys who can go up and make a play but drop some easy ones are great for big play offenses, but if we could get an Amon-Ra St. Brown type guy who runs good routes and catches everything but is WR3 on his college team it would be a match made in heavencalumnus said:Joegeo said:

"Not too impressive" but a lot better than we have now. They helped Mendoza get there by securing catches. They were recruited by B1G teams. And you are talking about our 4 and 5 receivers from last year after dismissing our best guys. Of course my statement "Imagine Sagapolutele with last year's receivers" included Endries and Hunter.

We need a Billy Beane to Moneyball Cal.
Don't we have a Bear braniac that can AI the sh@it out of this and construct the best team Cal can have taking into consideration the scholastic and financial limitations we labor under…….or at least figure out a way to make The Portal malfunction.

Yup, this is just par for the course in FCS games under Wilcox. We never look good and it doesn't mean anything.

This post actually made me chuckle. Not because I disagree. I largely agree. But I think there is a portion of the analysis missing. We never look good and it doesn't mean anything. Except we never ARE good under Wilcox.
So while I agree that on an individual level it doesn't mean anything, I think taken as a whole it does mean something. Consistently playing down to vastly inferior competition is not nullified by playing much better against better competition when normally you play just well enough to lose to the better competition.
Successful teams are disciplined and motivated all of the time. That is in practice, the weight room, against inferior opponents, always. That is how you succeed when it counts. No one can be 100% on point 100% of the time. There are going to be bad days. That is why we say games like this don't mean anything. But they don't mean anything when you are normally on top of your game and it's an outlier. When it's not an outlier, it means something. Or if it is a consistent outcome and then you go on to success every year, it means little ( though I still think it isn't good). For us it is a consistent outcome and we go on to suck.
Maybe the coaches shouldn't go into these games thinking they are going to not take the opponent seriously and experiment all over the place or keep things vanilla. Give your opponent respect and prepare. Destroy them for a half and when your team has shown they can properly prepare for a game and play disciplined and energetic football, then you have earned the right to change the focus. Not coming out every opening kickoff ready to kick butt is a bad idea. Coming out of the tunnel ready to go is learned behavior and you should take every opportunity to learn it.
Am i worried about this game this season? No. However, so far we played a very bad OSU and drilled them not as much as we drilled them last year. We played uninspired against an FCS team. We did our jobs, not particularly impressively. In other words, we are playing August/September Wilcox football. The question is will we play October/November Wilcox football.

If JKS was a proven 4 year starter already then sure, we don't want to risk unnecessary injury. But as a true frosh working with a corp of new WRs and TEs I think the more real game reps JKS can get to get used to things and build a connection with his receivers the better.
