Square jaw and one rich donor. Easy story. Shut up and support the laundry.

Cal needs Will Stein OC from Oregon. He would coach up JKS and build a great offense around him.

Will Stein wasn't able to retain JKS at Oregon.

Will Stein wasn't able to retain JKS at Oregon.

That could've been due more to the depth chart than any antipathy toward any particular coach.

They didn't even expect JKS to show up at Oregon and they already had their QB room set.
They weren't heartbroken when he transferred out….

Oregon is the #3 team in the country with the #5 scoring offense lead by a 6th year senior QB, Dillon Gabriel, with a passer rating of 165 who is also from Hawaii (Mililani) where he broke Tua Tagovailoa's state passing record (subsequently broken by Sagapolutele).

If anything, I'd think Stein would be a plus in keeping Sagapolutele and attracting talent to surround him with.

Yeah, Jarren was commited to Cal all along and only switched to Oregon last minute after Mendoza called him to tell him he would not be welcome. For Oregon, it was a fluke. They were set at QB and Sagapolutele was an unexpected bonus.

When Mendoza transferred out, Sagapolutele transferred in. Ducktilldeath was happy for us and for him.

UO's starting QB is Dante Moore. Moore transferred from UCLA to UO after his freshman year (where he started) and sat behind Gabriel last year.

Of course, thanks, I must have been looking at the 2024 stats because I was surprised to see Dante Moore listed but with Gabriel the clear starter. So just replace Dante Moore and his 172 passer rating to the above.

No worries. My UCLA buddies were excited when Dante Moore signed with UCLA and really upset when he left. They're as upset with how well he's doing at UO as some of the posters here are about Nando's success at IU.

The difference was that Moore did not perform well at UCLA, contrary to Mendoza at Cal.

As to OU and Stein, there was no returning starter for that job, JKS could have competed for the position.

There was no returning starter but it was obvious the job was Moore's based on him already being in the system for a full year. JKS was never a serious consideration by the Duck coaching staff.

From what I heard from UCLA fans, they knew the problem was with Chip Kelly, not Dante Moore. They were upset when Moore transferred to UO.

As I saw it, Cal fans were also upset when Nando transferred to IU.

In both instances, the transfers were due to a lack of competent coaching, IMHO.

So Chip Kelly is incompetent?
I'd have to disagree based on his overall coaching record.
He was the OC last year for Ohio State. He absolutely embarrassed Lupoi and the Ducks last year in the playoff game on their way to winning a NC.

Yes. Check out his record at UCLA. Heck, he even lost to Cal in his final Pac-12 game! Ask any UCLA fan whether Chipper was any good as the HC at UCLA. I'll wait.

Moore was a true freshman starting at UCLA. Generally, players are better at age 21 than 18/19. Bott Oregon and Indiana benefit from this.

I don't need to ask any ucla fan, and I'm
No Chip Kelly fan, but he's far from incompetent.
He's got way too many successes in spite of his ucla tenure.
UCLA is likely more the problem than it was Kelly.

Chip Kelly was excellent at UO. He was an innovator and changed the offensive game. Then he went to the NFL where he was mediocre, at best.

UCLA was initially stoked to sign him as HC, until he proved disinterested and wound up continuing his mediocrity. Chip failed to adapt and evolve, and worse, he was full of hubris and unwilling to change.

OSU is doing well not because of Chip Kelly. In fact, prior to the Chipper's advent at OSU, they were already a top team. He hasn't really moved the needle for them. In this way, he's no different than Tosh at Bama under Saban. That is, the team's success predated his arrival and is unlikely to be attributable to his efforts.

Agree with this take. He was amazingly smart and innovative as an OC. Oregon promoted him so they wouldn't lose him. Nike and his system recruited well in spite of his personality which was always better suited to being an OC or a coach in a small place at a lower level. A bad personality can survive in the NFL with a good system, but there were aspects to his system that just didn't translate well to the NFL

UCLA and LA was just a tremendously bad fit for his personality and his system was no longer innovative and he stopped innovating. Worse, he could not recruit like Oregon did at his peak. He seemed to lose interest when they were not winning. If he is at least interested at Ohio State that is a plus and Ohio State recruits itself. He is no longer cutting edge but at least he is still smart and understands percentages which gives him an advantage over coaches who do not and also have less talent at their disposal.

If Chip Kelly was any good, Ohio State would have won the National Championship last season (their first since 2014) and be #1 in the nation this season.

In the 10 years before Chip Kelly arrived at OSU, OSU finished the season ranked no lower than #10 and as high as #1 (see, https://www.collegepollarchive.com/football/ap/appearances-final-team.cfm?teamid=31). (Meanwhile, UCLA managed to get ranked only once during the Chipper's tenure, and then it was in his first year when he was still relying on Jim Mora's recruits.) That Chip Kelly's arrival at OSU coincided with the school's finishing the season #1 isn't really a credit to him as much as it speaks to OSU's commitment to winning football.

While it can be argued that Chip Kelly was brought in to OSU in furtherance of that commitment, there's no denying that OSU was already a top flight program before his arrival. That it won the national championship in Chip's first year really isn't due to Chip being great as much as him being surrounded by great talent and better coaches (including a HC who had been the previous OC and QB coach at OSU under Urban Meyer). Keep in mind, if Chip were really all that great, he wouldn't have been signed as the offensive coordinator, but rather as the Head Coach. But Chip had proven he was no longer a winning head coach given how poorly he performed at UCLA (where he got to recruit his own players and select his own assistant coaches).

In short, the Chipper is now (at best) a skilled offensive coordinator who can scheme and call plays for talented college football players (so long as he's surrounded by other good coaches), but he's proven that the rest of the college game has passed him by.
