Mendoza the best QB in the nation or playing for a balanced team with a weak schedule

It's hard to believe he went from mediocrity to the limelight in one season. He was good QB for Cal but not ARod or Goff caliber.

Better coaching, and doesn't try to do too much. You never know.

I thought he was pretty darn good here too.

Nando is a living indictment of Wilsux and company.

Indiana runs up the score on every opponent and they beat Oregon, while OSU can't claim a similar quality win. As of now, they are an undisputed top 2 team in the country

trumpanzee, it's hard to believe that a tv fan who watches cal games on his urine stained sofa in boise would evah make a positive and/or an insightful or interesting post about anything related to the cal football program considering he's NEVER attended a game at memorial stadium rite??

He is a good QB for a good system, which he is now in.

If we had just recognized Mendoza throwing downfield was our best offense, was what built our leads and just continued doing it in the 4th quarter, we would have won 10 last year,

I honestly believe Sagapolutele is a better passer than Mendoza but Mendoza has had better talent around him, last year and this.

WRs incapable of creating separation and OL wasn't giving Mendoza time last year to throw downfield. It's not clear why they didn't run more sideline patterns though, because he has certainly shown that he can complete that pass at IU.

He was. He was making up for a poor line and poor offensive system. Now he's at a place where both those things are good.

Mendoza was one of the top transfer QBs. Everyone knew he was good, including a bunch of us here who saw a potential future NFL QB held back by awful coaching and OL.

He may not be the best QB in the Big10. I'm surprised at how little ink Julian Sayin is getting given the numbers he is putting up in his rookie season. Yes, he has a superb supporting cast but Mendoza's ain't bad either.

I think you guys are missing the point that is relevant to Cal. How high in the first round will Devin Brown go? I was told here after Spring practice that our coaches thought he was just as good as Mendoza, so I'm thinking top 5.

Also much better supporting cast but , of course, recruiting is a big part of the better coaching.

Agree. 1. Has a good OLine that gives him time 2. Has good runners and a good running game around him - he doesn't have to win the game all by himself. 3. Has receivers who can catch. 4. Has strong recruiting providing him with depth at all positions.

i am going to come as a hater. I am unconvinced.

His running will not be a thing at the next level. He is not mariota nor kapernick level of runner.
His short and medium ball is pretty elite. I felt that way when he was at cal
I feel like his long ball lacked touch when he was here at Cal. I am not sure if that has improved at all

I watch some of his highlights at IU and I see a lot of YAC, and a lot of plays where the receivers simply are wide open because of great scheme or route running. In the NFL you have to throw into tight windows. I am not that convinced.

might be because i have my bear googles on though

My hot take on Mendoza is that he will have a Kyle Boller level NFL career. At Cal last year he was neither the problem nor the solution: excellent arm strength, very good accuracy on certain routes, but couldn't overcome the atrocious line play and RPO quagmire with improvisation or progressive reads. Not seeing too much difference at Indiana. To be fair, not that many QBs would have had that ability at Cal, even many in the NFL. So it's still a compliment to predict journeyman NFL career

IU is good and Mendoza is part of that but how is Texas A&M not #2 ahead of IU, or #1 for that matter?

Mendoza is the equivalent of Matt Leinert at USC.

He plays on an outstanding team with great offensive and defensive lines plus excellent running backs and amazing wide receivers.

He should add ballroom dancing to his coursework and prepare for a career in broadcasting after a cup of coffee in the League.

He is a very good college quarterback, but does not have the ability of top NFL quarterbacks.
